    experience highlighting the values of creativity tolerance care and fun As in all walks of life success requires stability and here lies the untold story of West Holts Since its conception a small dedicated group of friends volunteers and associates have lovingly steered the stage through its various transformations A global family The West Holts Area Co ordinator is Derek Dodd He first worked as a car park attendant for the Shepton Mallet Lions at the Festival in 1981 then sold programmes for a couple of years before working at the original 1984 Marquee Stage His son Simon now works in the West Holts transport team Derek remembers the early times The first line up was mostly Bristol bands with names like Rita Bix Rent a Party The Lozenges Soul Revue Parole Bros and Kim the Karpettes The next year was a step change we had a little outdoor stage and when Doctor and the Medics drew our first big crowd at the time of Spirit in the Sky I think we all went into shock Shona and Steve Symons have been involved with the Stage since 1985 Steve programmes the line up for West Holts Shona is in charge of Artists Hospitality and their daughter Flora now works as part of Shona s team Shona helps makes the talent feel part of the family The great thing about Glastonbury is that artists will just have fun relax and really get into it instead of being another show on the road she says A couple of years ago soul r n b singer songwriter Maverick Sabre decided he was going to stay even though his crew were leaving He ended up staying on a bed in the dressing room for three nights Barbara Belt is another crew member from the

    bridge between great song writing and dancefloor euphoria On West Holts we like to move between the past present and future Our exclusive Saturday night headline show brings together veteran legends who redefined black music throughout their careers The two hour performance begins with The Family Stone bringing us hits like I Want to Take You Higher and Dance to the Music before giving way to the mighty George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic with everyone coming together on stage for an epic finale Other legends we re thrilled to host include the great vibesman Roy Ayers whose fifty year career has bridged soul funk and disco and Brazil s Marcos Valle bringing samba infused tropicália into the mix The obligatory Sunday reggae legends slot goes to the UK s finest Steel Pulse We re living through a hugely exciting time in African music with artists across the continent gleefully experimenting with mixing the old and the new Pioneering this renaissance were the Kasai All Stars who hot wired their instruments to produce the hypnotic Afro techno that the world came to know as Congotronics One of the newer bands to burst on the scene is Ibibio Sound Machine fronted by Nigerian born Eno Williams Glastonbury s own Emerging Talent Competition has also gifted us the rather wonderful K O G the Zongo Brigade Saturday afternoon will see two bands back to back that take a very different approach to jazz Fronted by the fearsome Shacho aka The Agitator Tokyo s Soil Pimp Sessions go in hard and fast in a riotous live show They ll be followed by the rather more sedate but equally mighty Gregory Porter a man widely acclaimed as the greatest jazz singer of his generation Another vocalist of startling ability is Nai Palm of Melbourne s
