  • Ken Graveney, R.I.P. | Gloucestershire Cricket
    Gloucestershire County Cricket Club announces the death of former player Captain Chairman and President Ken Graveney who passed away at his home in Tyler Texas on Sunday 25 October Ken played for and captained Gloucestershire during his professional career He was a lower order left handed batsman and a right arm fast medium bowler of out swingers He played in a few matches for Gloucestershire in both 1947 and 1948 and then regularly in 1949 when he took 59 wickets including all ten wickets in an innings for 66 runs against Derbyshire at Chesterfield the second best innings analysis in the County s history He played less in 1950 and 1951 however because of fitness problems with a slipped disc and back trouble forced him to retire from First Class cricket after the 1951 season In 1962 he reappeared in a few second eleven matches and on the resignation as County Captain of Tom Pugh at the end of that season Graveney was appointed to lead the County side in 1963 and 1964 With a talented side of bowling all rounders including the England players David Smith John Mortimore and David Allen Graveney bowled very little and at a very gentle medium pace he batted low down the order He retired in 1964 In retirement Graveney was active in committee work at Gloucestershire serving as Chairman of the General Committee His brother Tom and his son David both had long cricket careers with Gloucestershire and both captained the County Everyone at the Club extends their sincere condolences to the Graveney Family Andrew Strauss headline guest at Gloucestershire Exiles dinner Book now Antony Francis Hignell OBE News All News Cricket News Club news Community News News Archive 2016 News Archive February January 2015 News Archive December November October September August July

    the Year award in a season where he took 46 County Championship wickets at an average of 25 and established himself as a key player in the shorter forms of the game He was pipped to Bowler of the Year by fellow right arm seamer Liam Norwell who enjoyed a career best return of 61 wickets in four day cricket the most by a Gloucestershire player The night offered numerous opportunities to celebrate the club s historic Royal London One Day Cup final win at Lord s One of these was for the Champagne Moment of the Year which went to Jack Taylor for the catch that dismissed Surrey s last man Gareth Batty and secured Gloucestershire s first major trophy in 11 years That glorious day at the Home of Cricket was Geraint Jones last as a professional cricketer and he joined Simon Jones and David Fulton in an on stage conversation looking back at both the 2005 Ashes win and his time with Gloucestershire The 39 year old who had earlier received the President s Cup for the Spirit of Cricket said the sky is the limit for the squad he is leaving behind There was also a video tribute to Jones from his former international team mate and current ECB director of England Cricket Andrew Strauss In it he congratulated the former Kent wicketkeeper on having been a model professional a great bloke and living the dream on three occasions during his early days in the England team winning the 2005 Ashes and bowing out of the game with the RL Cup win Earlier in the night Kieran Noema Barnett and Tom Hampton were presented with their County Caps and George Hankins who his first professional contract this week collected the Collis Cup for Academy Player of

    George onto the professional staff for the next two seasons Both players worked hard during their time with the club s Academy and performed very well in the 2 nd team this season and have been rewarded for this They are both heading off to the Darren Lehman Academy this winter to further progress their games and we will be looking forward to having them back for next season Hankins 18 enjoyed a stellar 2015 where he broke Kent batsman Daniel Bell Drummond s record for most runs in a season at Millfield School He also made his highest 2 nd XI score with 166 v Warwickshire 2 nd XI and played for an England Under 19 Development side against Australia Under 19s The Bath CC batsman who hails from Keynsham has been with Gloucestershire since the age of 15 and was named Academy Player of the Year at the club s end of season awards George said It has always been my ambition to earn a professional contract and to play First Class cricket with Gloucestershire and I am really pleased to have signed Zimbabwe born Gilmour 19 made his first 2 nd XI hundred against the MCC Young Cricketers earlier this season and captained the side during the latter half of the season An aggressive batsman he played age group for Berkshire before joining Gloucestershire s Academy in 2013 He plays his club cricket for Downend CC He said I am really happy to have signed a professional contract with Gloucestershire Having George sign at the same time will definitely make it easier as he will be going through the same thing I am looking forward to going out to Adelaide The Darren Lehman Academy has produced a lot of good players people like Joe Root so I
