paths have been rebuilt using the latest state of the art technology One of the key factor s lies in the multiple sets of tees introduced on each hole to accommodate players of all levels as the Ryder Cup skipper noted A lot of people find the game very difficult so the aim with the golf course was to make it as playable as possible for golfers of all levels We are trying to encourage people to play the game in a beautiful place and the aim is not too intimidate but to encourage We didn t change the template or routing of the course but upgraded it and brought it into the modern world making it as visual as possible We want people to go out there have fun and enjoy the course and its challenge so much that they want to come back and play it again The course is a challenge but also very fair The redevelopment is the first design project that McGinley has collaborated on with Welling who worked with Tom Fazio for more than ten years and is also the main consultant for Tiger Woods Design Welling who has worked on more than 90 projects worldwide including the re design of the famous PGA Tour course at Quail Hollow and Waterville in Ireland added We are proud that we have created a golf course that all golfers will enjoy in the months and years to come and I have really enjoyed working with the resort The redevelopment is part of a major 29 million investment programme that has been undertaken by Quinta do Lago since 2009 with a further 21 million set to be spent on improving its facilities over the next three years In line to become the new number one course at the prestigious family resort the North Course has been revamped with the emphasis firmly on precision and strategy While many modern day developments tend to focus on length Welling and McGinley have been keen to create a golfing experience where accuracy and course management are the key factors Dwyer added What Paul and Beau have achieved in such a short space of time is amazing and we re very excited about the future Golfers will be blown away by the redesigned layout and I m sure it s a course that they will want to play time and time again The North Course is part of the new face of Quinta do Lago and is the latest significant investment we have made to ensure that the resort remains the most family friendly venue in the Algarve As well as golf the culinary experiences are really starting to set Quinta apart We had the evening celebration dinner at the lakeside Casa Do Lago Restaurant with seaside shabby chic interiors and gorgeous seafood and many of you frequent Algarve visitors will have no doubt enjoyed numerous long lazy lunches at the fabulous Gigi s on the beach If you haven t already

as the current director of golf at Verdura in Sicily clearly understands what is required of a top notch holiday course Thus Assoufid is endowed with wide inviting fairways that encourage rather than intimidate and allow players to enjoy themselves as they go in pursuit of birdies and pars That s not to say it s a pushover because it most certainly isn t And serious trouble does occasionally rear its ugly head mostly in the form of a dry creek known locally as a shaaba which weaves through the back nine Trees too create problems but the gently swaying palms are so appealing it s hard not to like them and the olive trees are not really big enough to be threatening The cacti on the other hand are more of a menace and writing from experience should be avoided The 11th hole at Assoufid The layout begins gently and only hits its stride at the fifth a strong par four with a blind tee over a ridge The front side returns to the clubhouse at the ninth an excellent par three played from a slightly elevated tee The design really hots up on the back nine with the 10 th marking the first encounter with the creek which runs in front of the green Hit your ball in here and your lie could be anything from a simple chip up or completely unplayable The par five 14 th is arguably the signature hole A clump of trees splits the landing zone and the hole narrows progressively between the creek and the boundary fence as the green comes into view The closing three holes are all strong with the 16 th being a shortish par four that requires a drive across the river bed and a pitch to a green set in an amphitheatre in the hillside while the par three 17 th is also played across the shaaba The par 3 17th hole The finishing hole is a testing dog leg par four where the angle of the drive determines how long your second shot is to the green Hit it up the right side flirting with the scrub and you could be left with a very short iron go straight and you could be in of three bunkers where par could be a stretch Along with numerous bunkers intelligent use has been made of expansive waste areas that create difficulties without needlessly delaying play by obliging players to search for lost balls in unnecessarily deep rough The main benefit of these waste areas is they don t require watering and by reducing the amount of grass that has to be cut they enable green staff to concentrate on tees fairways and greens all of which are presented in immaculate condition Another standout feature at Assoufid is its elevation changes Marrakech is as flat as a pancake and most other courses in the area reflect this lack of elevation however Cameron has worked in plenty of height into

The middle stretch of holes are much more open but are no less easy Playing a course without bunkers they decided not to put any on the new land for the sake of continuity is something of a refreshing change but clearly won t be everyone s cup of tea For starters without these obviously visual cues it s often hard to see where the fairway goes especially on some of the flatter holes on the outward nine This clearly isn t a problem for members but for first time visitors it can create a degree of uncertainty when standing on the tee While there is no sand to contend with there are plenty of trees to block your route to the green as is evident on the first hole a brutal 440 yard par four which the card has it as the most difficult on the course And so it proved with two lusty blows required just to get with wedge distance of the angled green which is protected by trees and a hollow in the front left The dogleg left par four third is another hole that will prove taxing for first time players With the course s main irrigation lake on the left and another pond biting into the fairway from the right a little further on the drive looks extremely threatening In fact the big lake on the left should not really be in play and the ideal line is to the outside of the dogleg A tee shot placed close to the pond on the right will give the best line into and visibility of the angled green While there are no bunkers at Luton Hoo there are plenty of other hazards to negotiate Backtracking a little Luton Hoo s five par five holes are a strong collection The 11th the last of a series of holes playing back and forth over the row of ponds at the lowest point of the site is a clever three shotter Water threatens in front of the green and although getting home in two is a feasible challenge finding a good place to lay up offers less mighty hitters an interesting problem too The 17 th is an elegant hole in the historic park with a terrific green Long narrow and set on a slight plateau anyone trying to hit it in two will require a fine strike Undoubtedly the hole that attracts the most attention is the 13th Nominally a par three it plays a punishing 261 yards from the back tee and an equally scary 245 yards from the yellow tees To make par here requires a phenomenal tee shot or a fine up and down After your round a rub down in the spa or a swim in the 18 metre swimming pool might be considered essential for some but a pint and a sandwich in the clubhouse was more my thing The Werhner Restauant Away from the golf there is tennis cycling clay pigeon

played in their life It s a bold claim but it s certainly one of the most memorable with a succession of stunning holes notably at the par three 6th the tee of which is perched 44 yards above the green with a full frontal panorama of the Black Sea beyond With many steep climbs a buggy is all but essential so it s advisable to book one in advance when securing a tee time here It s also important to bring a large supply of golf balls as once they re off the fairway they re generally lost for good Our group of 16 capable golfers lost 80 balls during the first round and a marginally more respectable 50 during the second so you have been warned After counting up your scores good or bad guests can relax in a choice of two residential villages where many of the spacious and comfortable rooms offer panoramic sea views while the superb spa comes highly recommended for those with aching golfing muscles There is also a private beach club available for guests to enjoy which boasts its own restaurant and beach bar and is the ideal venue for enjoying chilled out evenings in the summer time when the barbeque is constantly fired up Diners are truly spoilt for choice at Thracian Cliffs with the resort featuring a range of gourmet restaurants on site including Geti which offers a varied menu of traditional Bulgarian cuisine as well as tasty Provencal inspired dishes For those golfers with any ammunition left the next challenge is the Lighthouse Golf Resort which boasts an Ian Woosnam designed championship layout Winning rave reviews almost as soon as it opened in 2004 the course sits comfortably on top of towering cliffs and features panoramic views out to sea It has been designed to resemble a links with numerous bumps and hollows inviting fairways and striking white bunkers while five large lakes add to the challenge BlackSeaRama Resort Next door is another Gary Player design BlackSeaRama which opened in 2008 The views from the cliff top plateau are particularly special while the 7 200 yard course which is divided into two loops of nine is equally memorable Each hole is self contained between towering hillocks that almost perfectly re create an authentic links The elevation on each tee is significant and adds considerably to the enjoyment of what is a truly superb layout While sub zero temperatures are the norm in the depths of winter autumn and spring are very mild averaging 20 25 degrees and offer a perfect climate for golf Temperatures in the peak summer months of July and August can reach 30 35 degrees although the coastal courses enjoy cooling sea breezes With Bulgaria outside of the Eurozone the pound goes a long way with a nice meal at a local restaurant costing less than 10 and a bottle of beer no more 70p The main coastal resorts have all been built alongside blue flag beaches

to a steeply downhill sloping fairway and then a pin point short iron to an island green that sticks out into the water that we first encountered on the opening hole My heart was certainly in my mouth as my wedge shot headed towards the putting surface and the resulting par felt very much like a birdie The par five 14th on Donnafugata s links course The back nine offers plenty of variety with the 14 th a par five that has a split fairway divided by a large pond being a highlight The safe option is the larger bail out area on the right while a much smaller landing area on the left which also has water on the left and the pond on the right gives the shorter shot to a raised green I closed my eyes and hit a rare draw with my driver that left me in what can only be described as Position A about a foot short of the lake on the left hand side that gave me only 160 yards to the green A 6 iron over the flag and two safe putts saw a birdie marked on the scorecard and had me wondering what all the fuss was about All in all the Links is a course that tests not only your shot making ability but also your course management skills and there are very few holes where you can just pull out a driver and smash it With testing rough some significant elevation changes and very few flat greens the Links always keeps you on your mettle Yes the greens could be slightly smoother and the bunkers in significantly better condition these are being improved even as I write but all told it was entertaining from start to finish and you can t ask for much more than that from a resort course The adjacent Parkland course winds it way through a typically Ragusan landscape Ragusa is a southern region of Sicily keep up of olive and carob trees and after a fairly pedestrian start bursts into life at the seventh hole a sweeping downhill par four played to a green protected by a large lake The layout gets appreciably more interesting as the round progresses culminating in the last three holes where water plays a factor in either your tee shot or approach to the greens at 16 17 and 18 With a variety of teeing options you can make it as hard as you like although it s never going to be easy especially with ball grabbing Bermuda grass making life tough from the rough Off the golf courses the resort s practice facilities are being currently undergoing major improvements following the signing of a deal to open a Darren Clarke Centre of Excellence which will ultimately offer a variety of tuition packages for golfers of all abilities although for now a driving range is all that is offered The rooms are stylish and spacious and offer stunning views
