  • SO NEAR, YET SO FAR - Golf News | Ski Magazine
green I can leave it eight feet short and have a dead straight putt up the hill which I ll make the majority of the time My speed control was really what cost me this week the five three putts in the second round and then just my speed control in general wasn t great On that hole I had left so many of them short throughout the week so I said I m not leaving this one short I m going to get this one up there and instead hit it off the other side of the green It was really dead there so that was a mental mistake on my part Instead of being patient and just accepting eight feet from 40 yards like I do on a 40 yard wedge shot I was a little too aggressive with it when it wasn t necessary How much do you think the weight of history played on your mind over the closing holes I knew I needed to get to at least 15 under if I was to stand a chance My number for the day was to shoot four under and I managed three under I did not expect three guys to get to 15 under in those conditions I did not see that happening That was some phenomenal golf and some clutch putting playing by those guys so I knew I needed to get another one on the back nine which is not an easy place to try and steal one That putt on 16 went in but none of the historical elements came into my head whatsoever because 17 is just so brutal and 18 is tough to get close So at that point it s how can we work our butt off to make a four on 17 and just give ourselves a putt to win It s amazing that you re able to sound so positive after such a disappointing result I played a great round of golf I didn t miss many chances other than at 8 I thought it was perfect Obviously 17 and 18 could have been a little different but I struck the ball phenomenally well I drove the ball as good as I ve driven it this entire year including the other majors and every other tournament I ve never felt that comfortable with my driver and really just hit them right on my target lines The way that I played this week would have won the US Open by more than just a shot I didn t play as well there It s just that s the kind of golf that was played by the field this week it just took some special golf Whoever comes out the champion that s a hell of a major Does missing out on the Open make you even more hungry to win the PGA next month I don t know how many guys have done three majors in a year I

  • Johnson doubles major tally at drama-filled Open - Golf News | Ski Magazine
It hasn t set in yet I was patient I had some scripture going in my head and I thank the Lord I thank my friends I thank my family I m just in awe right now Johnson after making a 22 foot putt for birdie on the 72nd hole to earn a place in the playoff made birdies on the first two playoff holes to sink the hopes of Leishman and Oosthuizen After a bogey on the third hole the par 4 17th Johnson s par on the last hole proved enough to win after Oosthuizen lipped out with his birdie from 12 feet that would have sent the match to sudden death Leishman made bogeys on the first and third holes and was left a spectator over the closing hole Both Louis and Marc are both phenomenal players They could be standing here right now too Johnson said World No 2 Jordan Spieth and Jason Day finished one shot out of the playoff in a tie for fourth Spieth would have toppled Rory McIlroy as the No 1 player in the world with a win and he would have joined Ben Hogan as the only players to win the Masters US Open and Open in the same year Johnson began the final day three shots behind leaders Oosthuizen Jason Day and amateur Paul Dunne Both Johnson and Leishman shot 66 while Oosthuizen shot 69 to get to 15 under and in a playoff Leishman who shot 64 in the third round missed his chance to win outright when he left his birdie putt on the last a foot short while Oosthuizen made a birdie from five feet on the final hole Stay up to date Share this story tweet Read Online Looking for back issues Subscribe FREE to

  • SPIETH BLOWS AWAY RIVALS TO CLAIM GREEN JACKET GLORY - Golf News | Ski Magazine
the top spot over the coming years that was wearing the famed green jacket when darkness fell on Sunday night Holding such a commanding lead and playing with the confidence of a man twice his age Spieth ensured Augusta s back nine was a strangely quiet place to be on Sunday afternoon Bar the cheer that went up when Mickelson holed his bunker shot on the 15 th hole for an eagle there was an eerie hush around the tees and greens as the patrons held their collective breath and waited to anoint their new champion elect Playing alongside Justin Rose in the final round in what was effectively a two ball match for the green jacket Spieth extinguished any hopes the chasing pack harboured of him crumbling under all the weight of expectation with birdies at the first and third holes Rose to his credit never backed down from the challenge bagging birdies of his own at the opening two holes in what was an electrifying start for the final group The Englishman saved an excellent par on the fourth but it was clear that he could not afford any mistakes and bogeys on the par three sixth and par four ninth cost the former US Open champion the chance to truly challenge his younger rival Instead the American effectively put the tournament beyond reach around the turn sinking birdie putts on the eighth and 10th to open up a six shot lead Rose had rallied late on in the third round making birdies in five of his final six holes and he again found form from the 13th picking up three successive shots to close the gap to four while Mickelson was also on the hunt holing out from a bunker on the 15th for an eagle that saw him close to within four Spieth though responded with a birdie on the 15th that made him the first player in Masters history to reach 19 under par Had he held that until the finish it would have set a new Masters record for the lowest winning score and equalled Woods s record for any major set at the 2000 Open but a bogey on the last sadly denied him both honours Tiger Woods for all his huffing and puffing managed a more than creditable tied 17 th place on five under par but his wayward driving and lack of match practice with the putter eventually took its toll Playing with his Nike stablemate in the final round 10 shots behind the leader the generation gap was very much in evidence with McIlroy pulling seven shots clear of his rival to reinforce the different trajectories of their respective careers Shooting rounds of 68 and 66 over the weekend McIlroy can take some comfort from bagging his best ever result in the Masters but even he knows that he fell a long way shot of the brilliance shown by Jordan Spieth who looks every inch a serious rival for many

  • Nike launches 'Ripple' film ahead of the Masters - Golf News | Ski Magazine
Growing up Jack was my idol My first recollection of The Masters was 1986 when Jack won I remember him making a putt at 17 and lifting that putter up Fourteen years later at the 2000 PGA Championship I got to play with and against him someone I looked up to The film begins with a reenactment of a young McIlroy intensely watching Woods win his first U S Amateur Championship on TV in 1994 A few years later still from his hometown in Holywood Northern Ireland McIlroy witnessed Woods s electrifying performance of winning his first Masters title by an astounding 12 shots As the film progresses we see McIlroy emulating Woods s work ethic perfecting his game in the rain working on his putting stroke on a putting green at his house filmed at his actual childhood home with his mother Rosie and father Gerry supporting him all the way The film culminates with the two professionals competing against each other walking side by side down the fairway It s been an incredible journey for me going from massive fan to competitor said McIlroy To think that not too long ago I was that little boy watching him on TV to where I am now It s been a cool journey and I m very lucky I get to compete with and against him because he inspired me as a kid and he inspires me now He s the best player I ve ever seen https youtu be CdhWhgA8Y0A Stay up to date Share this story tweet Read Online Looking for back issues Subscribe FREE to the UK s most read Golf Newspaper latest golf news best travel deals latest competitions Join us now Featured News Interviews Bennett tees up golf academy at Manston 16 February 2016 Former
