    during building works innovating to make the very best use of limited space and designing every single element of the Unit to work well for patients and for clinical staff is a major planning and painstaking process Glen Campbell Senior Project Manager explained What most people won t realise is the huge and complex infrastructure that exists below and above wards in the hospital Before we can do anything or make any changes electricians engineers and others have to consider how to achieve what is wanted and plan the basics including important issues such where medical gases will be sited Meanwhile the architect works on the detailed design in close contact with clinical staff to ensure what patients need and want is made possible and nurses and consultants draw up the operational plan All these and other parts of the jigsaw have to fit together so what may seem like a straightforward task is very far from it The Unit has 17 beds a kitchen area social room quiet room an open nurse reception area and clinical rooms Everywhere there is colour clever use of lighting and innovative storage giving a fresh clean yet homely feel Hundreds of items have had to be purchased new from the well designed patient lockers chairs capable of doubling as beds for relatives special receptacles for surgical gloves clinical and other waste to TV s an exercise bike and games for the social room Most of these have to pass stringent cross infection tests and need to be easily cleaned keeping patients safe Such is the attention to detail that Senior Sister Michelle Collins tested a number of bedside reclining chairs to find the perfect one for recovering patients she personally looked at where electric points should be sited to aid efficiency and carefully

    the Countess was received with great delight by all A short walk to E level in the North Wing of the Hospital took the Royal party to the Young Adult Cardiac Unit where staff having just dealt with an emergency quickly recovered to greet their Royal visitor The Countess toured the Unit with Senior Sister Michelle Collins admiring the photographs lining the corridor walls before doing what she does so well talking to patients and staff and putting everyone at their ease She found time to be introduced to the ward team and cardiac consultants as well as seeking out patients never once appearing hurried and giving each person special attention Onward to view the new kitchen and lounge with its specially designed architectural features and retro colour schemes and then up to F Level to the Heartbeat Education Centre where around 80 people were waiting The atmosphere there was buzzy and excited as trustees corporate and community supporters and the Heartbeat team were ready to be presented Also in the line up were VIPs Mrs Jane Monro wife of the much loved late Jim Monro Wessex Heartbeat Patron Lawrie McMenemy and Philip Lawford from the Linbury Trust Finally The Countess met five congenital heart patients Tracey Ellison Matthew Cornick Vicky Hatch Alex Ind and last but not least Ashton Hicks All of these had been active fundraisers during the HIGH 5 Appeal and each presented The Countess with a small gift representative of the ways in which they had raised funds Then the moment came for Consultant Tony Salmon to formally welcome The Countess before she made a short much appreciated speech and unveiled the surprising artistic plaque that reflects the design of the new Unit and will hung at the entrance Alison thanked everyone present for their generous
