    St Marys Children s work Around St Marys How to start a local study Where the study fits in History Our local area Geography map reading skills Geography mapping skills Citizenship relating to other people s lives Learning Objectives Children will know That our local area has changed considerably over the past 100 years That some buildings have remained the same whilst others have changed That jobs eating habits pastimes and lives have changed significantly since 1901 Learning Activities The unit was divided into 6 lessons learning objectives and outcomes were identified for each lesson Extensive use was made of our interactive whiteboard for displaying maps and aerial views Link Around St Marys Lesson Plan Introduction Although now a suburb of Liverpool West Derby is an old settlement and the village still has its own identity The study was introduced by looking around the village today and identifying the old buildings Old photographs were used to find buildings and to start children looking at how things have changed Lesson 1 Children were asked what they know about the history of West Derby Which buildings do they think are the oldest Which buildings are newer than others Children were shown an aerial map view of West Derby which buildings can they identify Which are older Newer Children shown Gore s directory what information can we get from this Children completed a piece of writing about West Derby village Lesson 2 Children examined Gore s directory more closely shown 1901 census record what information does this show us What do we think life would have been like for the families on Meadow Lane What clothes would they have worn What would they have eaten What jobs did they do How is this different from our lives Looked in detail at one person

    circus skills workshops as they re live its hey day Where St George s Infant School Great Yarmouth Who Year 1 whole school Download the Case Study Year 1 pupils read stories about the circus and linked these to archive photos and programmes dating back to the 19th century of the Hippodrome to identify similarities and differences and change over time The whole school visited the Hippodrome for a day of circus skills workshops including plate spinning juggling trapeze and tightrope and a tour of the museum The whole school also went to the schools performance at the beginning of the summer season to see the circus and water spectacular The theme was adopted across the curriculum by the whole school for a term with all subjects being taught with a circus theme and supporting work for the arts award The children s art work was displayed in St Nicholas Minster as part of an exhibition by a school cluster and the students performed a song and a dance routine as part of a joint seaside spectacular with a heritage theme Intended Outcomes To learn about this significant landmark building and how the circus has changed To develop a sense of chronology To increase children s confidence and sense of achievement To develop a range of opportunities to learn outside the classroom What we did Used archives and photographs to research the building Created art work for an exhibition Learned some circus skills Took part in a performance Challenges Using archive resources with Year 1 Taking children out on a trip Successes All children learned about the history of a significant building All children had memorable experiences which are likely to stay with them into adulthood Every child conquered the trapeze including S who has Cerebral Palsy All children had

    The Great Links Lesson plan Around St Gregorys Whiteboard Activity Smart Around St Gregorys Children s Work Around St Gregorys How to start a local study Where the study fits in A study investigating how an aspect in the local area has changed over a long period of time or how the locality was affected by a significant national or local event or development Learning Objectives Pupils should be able to 1a place events people and changes into correct periods of time 2c to identify and describe reasons for and results of historical events situations and changes in the periods studied 4a find out about the events people and changes studied from an appropriate range of sources of information including ICT based sources for example documents printed sources CD ROMS databases pictures and photographs music artefacts historic buildings and visits to museums galleries and sites 4b to ask and answer questions and to select and record information relevant to the focus of the enquiry 5a recall select and organise historical information 5b use dates and historical vocabulary to describe the periods studied 5c communicate their knowledge and understanding of history in a variety of ways Learning Activities Link Lesson Plan Around St Gregorys Lesson 1 Introduce the idea that we are employees of the Cheltenham Town Tourist Board As a class discuss what our role may be Split class into working parties of 3 or 4 children decide which eras would be good to focus on children to list 1 what they know already about their locality in their chosen era 2 what they are wondering about and want to find out about 3 how they think they could find these things out Lesson 2 Children research the area around the school and how it has changed work in groups

    their own opinions about the impact of Belle Vue on the area and whether or not they thought it should still be open today The activities were designed to develop academic skills whilst also exploring the history of Belle Vue Students in Year 6 developed their map work skills using archive maps and plans of Belle Vue to explore how it grew and designed a Belle Vue heritage trail Students in Year 5 took part in artefact handling sessions in collaboration with Archives at Central Library Chethams Library and private collector Brian Selby They gained Arts Award Discover through their local history study Intended Outcomes Learn about the history of Belle Vue which until the 1970 s was located around the corner from the school Investigate memories of local people about Belle Vue and allow students to make their own opinions Develop historical skills as well as provide alternative opportunities for literacy numeracy drama art Create a sense of pride in the history of the area as home to Belle Vue Showground of the World What we did Investigated primary and secondary sources linking to Belle Vue Interviewed people in the community to find out opinions about Belle Vue Formulated opinions about the impact of Belle Vue on the area and whether or not they thought it should still be open today Compared past and present in their local area Took part in workshops and activities designed to develop academic skills whilst also exploring the history of Belle Vue Showcased findings in a range of formats including art drama and dance along with written pieces of work Challenges Compiling the resources so that each class teacher felt confident to deliver the lessons took time Tempting to get carried away with arts based activities There were however lots of opportunities for
