    the road at NC242237 and follow the track to Achmore Farm Pass east of the farm and continue along the track which now ascends the shoulder of Glas Bheinn The track is obvious but is wet in places After the highest point the track descends and is crossed at NC239284 by the path to the Eas a Chual Aluinn waterfall Ignore this path and keep straight on until the A837 is reached at NC239288 The track now runs along the west side of the modern road before crossing it at NC240292 After a steep descent the A837 is reached again Follow the A837 until NC236303 where the old track leaves the road and continues to the shore of Loch Glencoul at NC241316 The route is shown on the 1 25 000 OS map but this is only a partial survey so a survey of the whole route is really needed The uncertain parts are 1 Does any trace of the southern section from Ledmore or Ledbeg to Inchnadamph still exist or is it overlaid by the A837 This section has been excluded from the route description 2 At the north end does the route follow the path which meets the

    Ae Bridgend on the A701 Beattock to Dumfries road bus route a public road goes NW to Ae village The route to Beattock is now signposted and waymarked from 1km beyond the village A forest road strikes off to the right parking at a picnic area in 2km and goes up the west bank of the Water of Ae for a further 1 km to cross it by a bridge Continue up the east bank rising steadily to NY 010 964 from where two routes are possible a To continue directly to Beattock carry on to leave the forest by a gate at NY 017 974 Follow the forest boundary eastwards by an old drove road and in 2km re enter the forest to join a green ride and go NE to Long Cairn a prominent structure Continue through the forest to join a track to Stidriggs Farm and from its road end join the public road to Beattock b Alternatively to follow the cycle route turn left at NY 010 964 go NW N and E for 2 km to reach Blue Cairn continuing easterly and contouring NE round Mount Haul to pass an old quarry on the left

    pick up the double walled drove loan again to NS 773 812 From here head north and east past Rashiehill along a farm track to meet the minor road north of Glenhead and follow this to Drumbowie reservoir Alternatively from NS 773 812 head south and east along a track across a difficult gully and then along the boggy remains of the drove loan east to Drumbowie reservoir At this point the drove loan disappears under the west end of the reservoir emerging at the eastern dammed end to proceed as a minor public road to the Head of Muir and Bonnybridge OS Landranger 64 Glasgow Motherwell Airdrie or preferably OS Explorer 348 Campsie Fells Kilsyth Strathblane Fintry Heritage Information This droving route is mentioned in legal documents dating back to 1739 and may have been enclosed around 1800 when it appears as Drove Lone on a plan drawn for the division of Denny Muir The Doups Drove Loan also appears on a Banton estate map of 1805 bordered by fields with evocative names Craigmuir Craigduff Stone Close Siteasy and Berry Muir As he drove the cattle east along the Drove Loan the drover will have been able to see Falkirk for the first time His route onwards from Falkirk too was laid out before him over the Lowlands to the Pentlands Cauldstane Slap which takes the drove road south The route is depicted very clearly on a map of Banton Parish from 1805 where it is called Drove Loan The majority of the route is lined by raiks which are the name for the double dykes built to hem cattle in and stop them from trampling crops or wandering off and these dykes are consistently 10 paces wide except for a section in the forestry where the track widens
