  • Watch out for sycamore seedlings
    rise in Atypical Myopathy cases that we saw last Autumn it is important to continue to be vigilant as Spring approaches Seeds from Sycamore Maple and Box Elder trees contain a toxin that causes a serious muscle disease when ingested The seeds that dropped in the Autumn may now be emerging as seedlings on the pasture which also pose a threat Seedlings may look like the photo The signs of Atypical Myopathy include Muscle weakness Dark red or brown urine Reluctance to walk or stand Sweating Trembling Heavy breathing Depression or apparent sedation The horse usually still tries to eat Some cases appear to have colic like symptoms If your pasture is affected we recommend the following measures to reduce the risk to your horses Mow the pasture then rest it for a few days once the saplings are cut they don t regrow Completely rest the pasture until the summer when it will be safe Fence off the affected area of pasture as the saplings grow the level of Hypoglycin A toxin they carry decreases so the affected areas will become less of a concern Grazon Dow Agricultural Sciences is an effective herbicide against sycamore saplings the pasture should
