  • The evolution of the compact
materials used by model engineers in their workshops such as ferrous and non ferrous metals hard and soft woods and a number of engineering and non engineering plastics It also contains details of abrasives adhesives bearing materials ceramic and refractory materials castings electroplating solutions fuels gases lubricants pickles polishing materials sealants and solders 7 95 An acknowledged authority on the popular Unimat mini lathe has developed numerous accessories and techniques to assist the model engineer in getting the best from the machine The projects in this book increase the scope of the machine and advise in the performance of a number of tricky operations 7 95 An introduction to the fascinating world of horology for the complete beginner This book explains the terminology of the clockmaker and provides general details of clock construction including layout of wheels and escapements all of which are fully described and illustrated 7 95 Photo etching in the form of electronic equipment printed circuit boards will be familiar to all modellers Less familiar is the application by model engineers of those same techniques to precision production of metal part for all aspects of model making The design of items and the production of the high quality graphics necessary are fully covered as are both home and industry routes to producing the finished items in a variety of metals 7 95 Dividing explains how radial work on a metalworking lathe such as the cutting of gear wheels or the drilling of holes on a set radius calls for a method of precisely spacing the cuts The principles underlying this aspect of engineering are explained in depth in this book 7 95 Sharpening workshop tools is probably the most diverse of all workshop activities and the one that is least understood by the majority of workshop owners

roller nears the bottom of the incline silver contacts on its arm and the magnet armature close The battery energizes the electromagnet which re latches the arm The pendulum then swings freely for about 50 beats until its arc again decays and the cycle repeats The time indicating mechanism is also quite unusual A similar one was used by England s Dr Woodward in his string clock to both indicate the time and power the pendulum These functions are reversed in this clock so that the time indicator is powered by the pendulum This inversion required several changes of the Woodward mechanism The pin wheel gate was abandoned a pivoted finger added to the pin wheel pawl and a spring loaded detent provided The latter accelerates the pin wheel to a velocity greater than that imparted by the pendulum This forces disengagement of the finger after it indexes the pin wheel A pawl attached to the pendulum rod near the top indexes the ratchet wheel which makes one revolution per minute in 1 1 2 second steps One tooth of the wheel is cut deeper than the others Once each minute the pawl drops into that deep tooth There it
