  • Tours of disused tube stations and tunnels announced – IanVisits
tunnels dug next to the tube station that were used as accommodation during air raids After the war the tunnels were used to house arrivals from Empire Windrush before being transformed into a Bed Breakfast accommodation for the Festival of Britain One of eight such shelters across London most are off limits as they are used for secure document storage so this is a very rare opportunity Photography is permitted but no tripods heavy bags or professional recording equipment is allowed Tours will take place in October and will cost 30 Photo by Transport Museum The other tour is to see one of London s newer disused tube stations at Charing Cross Go behind closed doors to exclusive areas not accessible to the public walk under Trafalgar Square and see the London Underground from a different angle Closed to the public since 1999 the Jubilee line platforms are now synonymous with movie and TV filming It s also usually the location for PR stunts that are breathlessly reported in the tabloids as commuters shocked by when actually they are all actors on a disused platform Tours will take place in June July and will cost 25 Photo by IanVisits Tickets to both tours go on sale on Friday 17th April at 10am at the following Eventbrite pages Clapham South Charing Cross Note You need to select the date you want from the less than obvious drop down above where it will be saying sold out Facebook 2 1k Google 7 Linkedin 0 Reddit 88 Twitter 70 70 2 3k charing cross clapham south transport museum 7 thoughts on Tours of disused tube stations and tunnels announced Nick Cooper says April 14 2015 at 12 43 pm Glad it s not just me not fooled by the commuters shocked by stories

  • Holborn tube station’s unexpected gift to particle physics research – IanVisits
anything One way to detect them is to look for the tiny flashes of energy that are released on the rare times they do hit something but to do so on the surface in a building is impossible because all the noise from other sources of particles and cosmic radiation drowns out the few hits that are caused by neutrinos So go underground and hope that the depth will absorb the noise And in 1943 that s exactly what the British physicist Maurice Nahmias did Not offered a deep mine to use he found that he was able to set up an experiment inside Holborn tube station some 100 meters below ground The aim being to reduce interference from cosmic radiation and other sources that could interfere with the experiment Sadly as it turned out 100 feet under London is simply not good enough to clean out the noise so that if a flash does occur the scientists can be pretty certain that it was a neutrino and not some other particle banging into something Although the experiment failed to detect neutrinos the drop in noise it did provide showed other scientist the direction to follow downwards and down they have gone ever since Some of the largest neutrino detectors in the world are deep underground often in disused mines If you ever sigh at the slow lifts in tube stations that still use them then think about neutrino hunters who can have a lift journey of several minutes to get down to their experiment And all thanks to a small box once installed in a corner of Holborn tube station After that initial experiment showed the potential for carrying out studies underground in the 1960s Holborn was often used for science of this nature A spare platform at Holborn
