  • Unused station platforms could be opened for Heathrow rail link – IanVisits
is approved The proposed link aims to improve services from the Reading side of the mainline railway and includes a 5km tunnel from the Great Western Main Line to Heathrow Terminal 5 There it would link up with the existing Picadilly Line and Heathrow Express platforms making use of two other platforms which were built but never put into use The two platforms were put there during the construction of the station in the anticipation that they would be needed for a proposed rail link to Waterloo Station and maybe the link to Reading Map from LOX Report The proposed rail link will leave the Great Western Main Line at a new junction between Langley and Iver station and link in with existing railway platforms at Heathrow Terminal 5 It will provide the capacity for four trains per hour from Reading to Heathrow via Slough with alternate services calling at Twyford and Maidenhead If planning permission is granted Network Rail would begin work at the end of 2016 with tunnel work starting in early 2018 The whole project would be complete in 2021 and could cut the journey time from Slough from 30 minutes to just 10 making it even easier to escape from Betjeman s hell Consultation dates The first stage of consultation on the plans starts this month and will consist of a series of public exhibitions in communities and stations potentially affected by the work Iver Parish Council Pavilion Jubilee Pavilion Iver Recreation Ground SL0 9PW 10 and 11 February 2 6pm 12 February 6 8pm Richings Park Sports Club Wellesley Avenue Richings Park Iver SL0 9BN 13 February 2 6pm 14 February 12 4pm Colnbrook Village Hall Vicarage Way Slough SL3 0RF 23 February 3 7pm 24 25 February 2 6pm Richings Park Sports Club Wellesley Avenue Richings Park Iver SL0 9BN 26 February 4 8pm 27 February 12 6pm 28 February 12 4pm In addition events are taking place within local stations where passengers will be able to pick up copies of consultation leaflets and view exhibition boards Heathrow Terminal 5 railway station 16 February 8 10am 4 6pm Heathrow Terminals 1 2 3 railway station 17 February 8 10am 4 6pm Reading railway station on footbridge between platforms 7 8 18 and 19 February 8 10am 4 6pm Slough railway station 20 and 21 February 8 10am 4 6pm A second phase of public consultation is expected in the summer ahead of submitting an application to the Planning Inspectorate in early 2016 for the necessary consent to build the scheme In related news Heathrow Express has already said that it will bid to run the trains when the tunnel is built Incidentally the preferred option for the HS2 spur to Heathrow would see a station built at right angles directly above the existing underground station Where there are currently 4 platforms they could end up with at least eight in a couple of decades time Facebook 67 Google 2 Linkedin 0 Reddit 0 Twitter

  • Gold display opens at the Bank of England’s museum – IanVisits
devoted to that most iconic of banking stores gold A modest cabinet brings together gold bars from Roman times to the present day and the signs explain why gold has been treasured for thousands of years and reveal the scientific properties that make it a vital ingredient in modern technology The display includes a rare gold bar from the 4th century AD a bar given as a symbolic gift to the church by The Queen at her coronation in 1953 I also learned that the measurement carats derives from the ancient Greek word for carob kerátiοn the seeds of the carob tree were used to weigh gold and precious metals because it was incorrectly believed that the seeds were perfectly uniform in weight Sadly the image above is simply a photo I took of the photo of the vault underneath the bank taken by someone else that now makes for a large background in a side room with a video about the metal and its fiscal importance I am sure it will be selfie heaven although maybe wisely placing it in the small video room meant that certainly while I was there the opportunities for selfies was fortuitously small What s more photogenic is the long standing display around the corner of a full sized gold bar in a glass box with a hole so you can slip your hand in and touch the precious lump of metal and try to lift it Gold is heavy surprisingly heavy In fact so heavy that I can t understand why that bus didn t slip over the side of the ravine instantly at the end of the Italian Job For once I suspect that the ban on flash photography is less to do with protecting precious relics from damage than courtesy the
