  • The danger of ladies hatpins on the London Underground – IanVisits
three hatpins protruding about three or four inches While I was still contemplating on the very evident danger and trying in a pure sense of self preservation not to come into touch with these uninviting necessities or the otherwise attractive toilette of the woman of to day one of the young ladies moved in conversation with her friend her head to one side and one of her hat pins went right into the eye of a gentleman standing next to me It was quite a miracle that he was not seriously hurt or blinded in one eye perhaps for a lifetime He only complained of a momentary pain and evidently no harm being done very little further notice was taken of this incident But what would have happened if the man had lost his eyesight which after all was only saved by a fraction of an inch Would he have been able to get adequate compensation As it was the girl seemed to belong to the poor class and shw could have hardly been expected to pay any damages as in a case in the Law Courts a few weeks ago when a lady was fined 3 for having inadvertently scratches the face of another lady with her hatpin Besides any monetary compensation would have been only a very poor consolation and both parties can be jolly glad that nothing serious had come of it But this is only one case one case out of many As a daily user of the tube and the congested lifts in the morning and evening I can invariably see people dodging protruding hatpins There you stand in the lift cramped in fro all sides no room to move even your arm and there in front of you only a few inches away a

  • Tangerine dreams with new Dinosaur at the Natural History Museum – IanVisits
a staple of Hollywood and plastic toy manufacturers and as such the Stegosaurus is visually instantly recognisable for scientists hardly anything is known about the animal itself That is partly due to the lack of specimens to study Just six full skeletons have ever been put on display and most of them are frankenstein esque constructions from multiple discoveries But now the most complete example of a Stegosaurus dinosaur ever found is going on display at the Natural History Museum in the museum s largest such acquisition in around a hundred years It s also the only Stegosaurus on display in a public museum outside the USA and unlike them the NHM s example is 90 complete missing just the left arm and bit of the tail It s also unusual in not being akin to gigantic roadkill having avoided the compression of 150 million years of rock pressure This makes it exceptionally valuable to scientists for studying and since its arrival in the UK last year has been scanned into a 3D computer model for long term research Then the bones were assembled and have now been put on display But not in the main hall which remains home to the Diplodocus display which is not an actual dinosaur at all but a replica of one uncovered in the USA in 1898 The new and authentic Stegosaurus will instead be found around the side by the Earth Hall Which is a bit of a pity as apart from missing out on most of the crowds the two dinosaurs were contemporaries of each other living around 155 to 150 million years ago The example here as massive as it is is just a young adult as it is just over five and a half metres long while a fully grown
