    26 27 28 29 15 More Blogs Brixton Blog Cabbie Blog Christopher Fowler City Metric Diamond Geezer Edith s Streets Greenwich Industrial History London Reconnections London Street Views Londonist Reddit Spitalfields Life The Ladies who Bus Wanstead Meteo West Hampstead Life No not that one the other one No not that one either the other one Yes this one the giant airport right in the centre of London on the Thames next to Parliament Sometimes an image exists one which crops up occasionally on websites with little other than a comment about how daft the idea is I try to dig in deeper and find out how that image came to be what was the thinking behind it Sometimes the research hits a brick wall I know that there was talk of an airport in central London which would have covered the Thames I know this was in the early 1930s around the same time as rival plans at Kings Cross or for the roof of Waterloo Station were talked about But other than a drawing in the Popular Science magazine nothing else seems to be known about this crazy scheme There were other schemes for an airport spanning the Thames as this one in the Getty archive shows View image gettyimages com As it happens using the Thames as an airport was not in itself an unknown factor as there were experiments with landing flying boats on the Thames as shown here at Westminster with the old Lambeth Bridge or here passing through Tower Bridge But the gigantic aerodrome that would have seen planes taking off next to MP s offices Sorry just a single drawing in an 80 year old magazine Had such an airport been built in Central London at the time it would today be obsolete

    Geezer Edith s Streets Greenwich Industrial History London Reconnections London Street Views Londonist Reddit Spitalfields Life The Ladies who Bus Wanstead Meteo West Hampstead Life Mathematician magician astronomer astrologer explorer occultist imperialist alchemist and spy John Dee continues to fascinate centuries after he first stepped foot in the court of Elizabeth I Time to reserve a date off work as what looks to be a rather good exhibition about the man opens next year but only between Mon Fri Cicero Opera omnia vol 2 ship drawing copyright RCP and John Chase In under 100 days time a never seen before selection from 100 surviving books once owned by the man known universally as Dr Dee will go on display at the Royal College of Physicians Alongside histories and guides to the art of love are mathematical treatises and introductions to the craft of alchemy turning base metals into gold More curious and captivating are Dee s astrological textbooks this is a man once imprisoned for casting horoscopes of Queen Mary Strangest of all perhaps are the accounts of Dee s conversations with angels for over quarter of a century he believed himself in contact with divine spirits via mediums known as scryers Reunited with Dee s lost library for the first time since his death more than 400 years ago are a selection of extraordinary artefacts he once owned Elements of geometry 1570 folding diagrams copyright RCP and John Chase From the British Museum comes a crystal ball for researching the occult and conversing with spirits a magic disc for contacting angels and a magical mirror for conjuring visions The Science Museum provides a scrying mirror for predicting the future and John Dee s own crystal of especial interest as he claimed it was given to him personally by the
