because eventually search engines won t bother to crawl a site and it ends up getting left behind and forgotten Graphics Graphics are an often overlooked but important element of a website with many never having being replaced despite any other changes to a site that may have taken place over time Keywords Keywords and search phrases are the search engines friends but only in the right density and position within the website copy Too many or too few are as bad as each other so balance is extremely important Usability With no shortage of choice on the web good usability is a must to keep visitors on your site If they encounter any difficulties finding information or navigating the site itself they will simply leave and look elsewhere Calls to Action Strong and persuasive calls to action should drive visitors to the final stage of the buying process the checkout If yours aren t doing this to at least an acceptable level then it s time to change them A website audit will actually cover far more than has been mentioned here and probably throw up some eye opening results into the bargain but the thing to remember is that whatever is found to be wrong with your site is totally fixable all you have to do is listen to your web designer Until next time No Comments Read More Tweet Search for Recent Posts Our Predictions for the Biggest Web Design Trends in 2016 What Are Landing Pages and When Should You Use Them Should All Websites Be Designed Primarily for Mobile 8 Hottest New Design Trends for Your Website Is Your Website Costing You Money Archives December 2015 November 2015 October 2015 September 2015 August 2015 July 2015 June 2015 May 2015 April 2015 March 2015 February

see the potential and registered their domains early whilst others were not convinced this new technology would be of any benefit to them quite ironic given that now most business throughout the world is conducted wholly or partially through the internet Websites started out as simple static affairs populated by blocks of text and images but as the internet grew in size and popularity and new technology became available ecommerce sites arrived and the world of business changed forever Communication also underwent a radical transformation as the speed and convenience of email was embraced by the public and businesses alike and like websites wasn t limited by borders or distance The internet has also been responsible for creating whole new industries essential to keep it running and evolving SEO specialists web hosting services domain registrars software and programme developers and not least web designers themselves Despite thinking that maybe the internet has gone as far as it can go it s currently going through yet another stage that literally puts it in our pockets mobile devices Phones iPads tablets or whatever we choose to carry the internet is now with us all the time There s no denying that the internet has firmly become part of everyday life whether for shopping finding information or communication and knowing what we know now I wonder what we d do if suddenly it wasn t there Makes you think doesn t it Until next time No Comments Read More Tweet Search for Recent Posts Our Predictions for the Biggest Web Design Trends in 2016 What Are Landing Pages and When Should You Use Them Should All Websites Be Designed Primarily for Mobile 8 Hottest New Design Trends for Your Website Is Your Website Costing You Money Archives December 2015 November 2015 October 2015

into a gif file which is then manipulated using Photoshop or similar programmes Where These particular examples created by Jamie Beck and Kevin Burg have a quality that s hard to define which somehow makes them even more interesting but whatever that quality is as a new fan I for one think that Cinemagraphs will definitely add a lot of flavour to a website and offer something just a little different to visitors It s all a matter of personal taste of course and it s likely they won t suit everyone However for those website owners and visitors who take little or no notice of static images or have no time for videos Cinemagraphs could well be a happy medium Until next time No Comments Read More Tweet Adding Your Website Videos to YouTube This was posted by John Sheridan on May 12th 2011 Long before the internet came into being one of the most effective ways of advertising products and services to a mass market was through television but only for those companies who could afford it YouTube Television advertising was and probably still is a cost prohibitive option for the vast majority of businesses many of which have to work with severely limited marketing budgets However YouTube has played a huge part in changing all that by allowing them the chance to compete with the bigger players on a more equal footing Limited Effect The use of videos on websites isn t exactly a new idea anymore but still relies on visitors finding a site if they re to have any significant effect consequently website owners have to continue actively marketing their sites for them to work with any degree of success Reach Out However adding your video to YouTube could change all that not just because of increased reach but by reducing the dependency on website visitors alone The phenomenal popularity of YouTube may have even outstripped television as a viewing medium but either way the potential to spread your brand to a mass audience is enormous and as YouTube is free your advertisement can remain for as long as you want or until you update it Spread the News Once your video is uploaded it s up to you to encourage people to view it so mentioning the fact on your website or informing friends clients and even casual acquaintances is a good way to get the ball rolling If you currently use video on your website and haven t yet thought about the possibilities of YouTube then perhaps now is the time to consider it After all where else could you get others to expand your reach on a potentially global scale for free It could be worth a try Until next time No Comments Read More Tweet Staff Images on Your Website Putting a Face to the Name This was posted by John Sheridan on May 10th 2011 If you ve ever conducted business with a particular company over a long period of time you ve no doubt formed relationships with the people you regularly speak to and also built up a mental image as to what they look like Understandable when more often than not the only visual connection with them or their company is their website Say Cheese I have clients I ve dealt with for years but never met face to face all communication has been via phone or email Recently though one of those clients added staff photos and bios to their website and now I could see the people I had been dealing with all this time I quite liked the fact that I now had an image that came to mind whenever I communicated with anyone from that company and felt I knew them just that little bit better At the same time I got to wondering if staff images play a significant part in attracting website visitors and converting them into paying customers Good to See You To my knowledge there are no definitive statistics as to whether the use of staff images actually makes a significant difference to sales one way or the other but from what I ve researched so far many companies feel that putting a face to the name is more about forging closer business relationships than anything else To me this makes sense because it follows that if a business relationship is strong and solid the sales should follow naturally anyway No Pictures Please I m sure those businesses that dislike the idea of displaying staff images have their own good reasons for not doing so such as data and privacy issues or perhaps just a preference for anonymity Whatever the reasons their views should be respected as it s obviously a matter of personal choice The internet has made it easy to form business relationships all over the globe but perhaps at the expense of personal interaction so the use of staff images on websites might in some small way go towards redressing the balance or not depending on your point of view Until next time No Comments Read More Tweet Could Social Networking Sites Become the New Search Engines This was posted by John Sheridan on May 6th 2011 As web design techniques and technology become ever more advanced users demands and expectations are growing at the same pace and one area in particular is perhaps growing faster than most It s no secret that the likes of Facebook and Twitter have had a massive impact on corporate marketing strategies and brand building a trend that for the present at least shows no signs of slowing down More and more companies are joining Facebook and Twitter because they re beginning to appreciate the phenomenal amounts of time people are spending on social networking sites and the increased reach they provide As efficient and detail filled as Google and others are though there s little that beats word of mouth when it comes to selling products and services and I

site to not scroll but after we talked through the way the web and web users work it was decided that scrolling would be okay Designed into the browser Okay I didn t design straight into the browser but after having in depth conversations with the client on the route the website would take it allowed me to move into the browser straight after the initial designs had been discussed and run past the committee Once in the browser it became far simpler to make iterations and I also made these iterations in the knowledge that I knew I wouldn t need to do them again Related Links Initially there was a related links box which would follow the user down the page as they scrolled but after much deliberation it was decided this box was more an annoying distraction rather than being helpful So as an alternative to this we decided to go with a fixed header which allowed all the navigation links and CTA to constantly remain in view The logo and the committee I did write an article a little while back looking at why we shouldn t make the logo bigger on websites but the committee all overruled that decision Design by committee can be detrimental although I would have to say in the instance of Piroto the process went as smoothly as I have seen as there seemed to be a consensus within the committee rather than contrasting voices Usually there are so many contrasting opinions floating around some more informed than others that a compromise is often the outcome which does neither one thing nor the next The conclusion Everyone was satisfied with the outcome which in itself is a success The success of the site though will be measured in conversions how many

  • William Blake House Case Study | web design northampton - in.house.media news blog
playful throughout the site as can be seen on the volunteers page where it appears a girl is blowing a bubble reading apply now Imagery We used real imagery of residents and volunteers during their day to day lives in the house which adds real credibility to the site I chose to use black and white photos in order to create a timeless feel and these also contrast nicely with the more vibrant colour scheme of other elements within the page The soft turquoise colours are meant to be calming and on the homepage rays of light radiate across the page The colour pink is associated with love and care which are fundamental principles of WBH it also contrasts well with the lighter colours surrounding it Pink is also thought to have a calming effect In the sports arena a similar shade of pink has been used in opposing team s locker rooms to keep the players passive and less energetic Footer I wanted to look at using a footer which resembled a silhouette of the house but wanted to use this sparingly and only for pages which related directly to the house itself Another reason for doing this was to try and make each page as unique as possible often inner pages follow in the same vein but I wanted each page to be designed individually New Identity We also created a new logo which needed to do several things The logo works on two levels firstly it symbolises a group of individuals holding hands which is representative of the community spirit Secondly it symbolises a flower which is representative of growth and new life which are other key watchwords at WBH Glory is forever Want to see the site in all its glory Then visit William Blake house
