  • In Your Own Time - Buddie moves on to veteran..................................
I chose him when he was five days old and after what felt like forever he finally came home mid October 2002 I started little bits of puppy training with him straight away and was amazed at how quickly he learnt and how eager he was to learn I developed a very strong bond with him and when he finally started his agility training almost a year later he was nothing but a pleasure to train and seemed to know exactly what I wanted all of the time Buddies first show was at Waldridge Fell on the 28 th February 2004 His very first run was in starters agility he went clear and won That was me him and unfortunately poor Holly out of starters forever He then had his first season in novice At that time you needed one agility and one jumping win to go up to senior and he won around thirty five jumping classes in novice and intermediate before I finally decided in September 2005 at Ribble show that I couldn t hold him on his contacts any longer and he won a novice agility class taking him up to senior His first senior show was in the December and he came ninth in agility which at the time was a massive achievement because under the old system senior classes included advanced dogs I was thrilled to bits and still treasure that rosette now He went from strength to strength in senior gaining a lot of places and he won around twenty jumping classes in total but in spite of having lots of second places in agility we never managed the two elusive wins needed to take us up to advanced Buddie qualified for lots of finals in his agility career the Pedigree Grand National final

  • In Your Own Time - Minutes of the Kennel Club Agility Liaison Committee Meeting January 2013
soon as possible rather than having to wait for the outcome ofresearch The Council requested that an amendment to the proposal to statestandardised dimensions for each obstacle to be proposed at its next meeting Mrs Croxford and Mr Gilbert agreed to liaise Proposed Amendment of Regulation H 1 B 3 a Hurdle 21 Mrs Croxford proposed an amendment to theabove regulation Mr Cavill seconded the proposal Mrs Croxford explained thatto ensure consistency because if judges did not make allowances for differentpole lengths in their course design it may have the unintentional effect ofaltering the flow and dynamics of the course from that originally intended Itwas argued that this could be injurious for larger dogs attempting to negotiatedifficult sequences The majority of the Council was not in support of theamendment and that course design was considered to be a matter for judges education As a result no further action was taken Proposed Amendment of Regulation H 1 4 b Marked Running Orders Championship Class 22 Mr Mallabar proposed an amendment to theabove regulation to remove competitors addresses from Championship Showcatalogues Mr Chandler seconded the proposal The Council unanimouslysupported the amendment since the Kennel Club and Championship show societieswould have recorded information The Council therefore agreed to recommend thefollowing amendment to Regulation H 1 4 b as follows FROM Marked Running Order Championship Class TheShow Society must publish a marked running order containing the following b Championship Agility Class Analphabetical index containing the names and addresses of competitors unlesswithheld by competitors the number and name of each exhibit and the number ofthe Championship Agility Class in which it is entered giving a separate lineto the name of each competitor and the full particulars of the exhibit asgiven on the entry form completed by the competitor TO Marked Running Order Championship Class TheShow Society must publish a marked running order containing the following b Championship Agility Class Analphabetical index containing the names and addresses of competitors unlesswithheld by competitors the number and name of each exhibit and thenumber of the Championship Agility Class in which it is entered giving aseparate line to the name of each competitor and the full particulars of theexhibit as given on the entry form completed by the competitor Deletions underlined Proposed Amendment of Regulation H18 a Approval of Judges 23 Mr Cavill on behalf of Mr Dicker aprivate individual proposed an amendment to the above regulation The Councilconsidered that the proposal did not reflect the intentions specified in thebackground information supplied The meeting was reminded that the reason forthe extended submission deadline for first time Championship judges was toenable the office to organise a second assessment in the event of the first beingunsuccessful However the Council was in favour of the principle thatindividuals should be able to apply for approval to award ChampionshipCertificates It was agreed to refer the matter to the Sub Committee for its views on the matter anda report would be provided for the Council s June meeting ITEM 11 DISCUSSION ITEMS Course Design Positioning of CollapsibleTunnel 24 Ms Weaver requested the Council discussthe importance of correct positioning on the course of the collapsible tunnel The Council sympathised with this concern since some representations hadwitnessed poor positioning of the tunnel in the past however the feedbackfrom regional meetings was that this was a matter for judges education It wasstated that concerns regarding the positioning of the collapsible tunnel werealready addressed in the judges training programme but it was acknowledgedthat many existing judges would not have attended these seminars A suggestionwas made to introduce a form of Continued Professional Development forexisting judges However it was considered that this was unnecessarily restrictive as to judge was voluntary Additionally it was stated thatalthough it would be useful for judges to have experience of handling dogs ateach height at which they judged it was felt this would make it more difficultfor show societies to find enough judges The Council urged judges to considerand understand the dogs path when designing a course to ensure the positioningof all obstacles was safe Therefore no further action was taken 25 On a separate point the Councilreiterated that there was advice available for judges for all areas ofjudging which could be downloaded from the Kennel Club website on thefollowing link http www thekennelclub org uk item 605 Introduction of a Fourth Hurdle Height Standard 26 Mrs Doble requested the Council discussthe possibility of integrating a fourth hurdle height in agility onbehalf of Ms Doble It was suggested that a Standard height hurdle should beintroduced at 550mm 21 65ins which was exactly half way between the currentMedium and Large heights A lengthy discussion ensued with each representativegiving a full account of the views expressed at their area meetings 27 Whilst it appeared that there wasmajority support for the concept of introducing a fourth hurdle height theCouncil recognised that there were a great many issues which would need to beaddressed before any firm proposal could be discussed During the Council sdiscussion the following key points were made a To support the suggestion of a fourthheight more research was required to support the premise this would bebeneficial to the welfare of agility dogs Nevertheless it was recognised thatit was for individual owners to ensure their dogs were fit enough to compete b Background to current hurdle height Thecurrent hurdle height was lowered from 726mm 30ins to be in line with FCIRegulations the large height category was between 550mm 650mm until threeyears ago when the Council supported a fixed hurdle height and the largecategory was altered to 650mm c That agility shows should be inclusive andprovide opportunities for all dogs to compete d To introduce a fourth height categorycould lead to the request for other height categories e That each dog s height measurement wouldhave to be precisely recorded f If a fourth category was introduced eachdog would be fixed into one of the four categories The swapping betweenheights for those dogs on the boundaries between different heights would not beallowed g To introduce a fourth hurdle height

  • In Your Own Time - Puppy Farming - you have to look!
the normal sense of the word although some of the perpetrators are indeed farmers with a sideline to boost their income most are just rather callous people who are taking advantage of an opportunity to make an easy profit When we use the term puppy farmers we are describing an attitude of mind methodically applied to breeding dogs To a puppy farmer the dogs they employ in their breeding programs are simply commodities A means to an end These dogs mean no more to them than a potato means to a potato farmer Something to be planted and harvested So what if some of the potatoes wilt and die So what if some die slowly due to lack of care and basic needs like fresh water and proper nutrition There are plenty that will live at least long enough to reproduce a few times And what about the fruits of the crop the puppies doesn t matter if a few of these die there will always be enough that survive for at least as long as is needed for them to be sold and produce the profit required Once the money is in their pockets the puppy farmers simply do not care about the outcome for the puppies Puppy farming is death and torture for the dogs caught up in the trade and the trade feeds on people desires to possess a pet and ignorance of the way the pups are bred Puppy farmers are well organised and they seek to cover their activities under a veneer of respectability They work together to protect each other They seek to influence from within the establishment for example we have come across one who has a boyfriend working for the local council that licenses her establishment he is a dog warden Another
