  • Does practise really makes perfect? - My Chess Interview Journey Part 1 · IRW Blog
I knew from then on that it would be a great team to work with I thought to myself great I would be able to use my perfected answers now Oh how wrong I was indeed the questions were the complete opposite of what I expected They weren t the typical using STAR format name a time you were in a team Let s be honest anyone can lie and say they are a great team player My assessors adopted the right approach in not wasting time asking these questions Whether I was a great team player was later tested during a two day work experience Instead the interview focused on getting to know me inside and out I did not expect and had no prepared answers for these type of questions I didn t give up and I focussed on being myself The non practised answers showcased my passion personality and abilities One thing I learned about this was that if you have a passion in something then you do not need to practise your answers You should be able to talk freely about it on the spot An interview alone is not enough in establishing candidate suitability because anyone can lie how great they are What I admired about the interview process was that the final phase focussed on putting my abilities skills and experience to the test in the form of a two day work experience Role Reversal Two Day Work Experience The final phase surprised me the most because I had to interview some key stakeholders and then present my findings Yep you read it right not them interviewing me but I had to interview them At first it felt slightly weird with this role reversal because it is not what I expected I couldn t really practice for this because I didn t know who exactly I would be interviewing nor do I know what their personalities would be like Therefore I had to tailor my questions during the interview I was fortunate that many stakeholders allocated some time out of their busy schedule to be interviewed This was the best part of the entire process because I was informed of the many elements that makes Chess unique I was able to understand how the expertise of each employee creates value for clients and how working collaboratively delivers long term sustainability What I learned Many people highlight that practising answers are essential for an interview However practising is not the be all and end all and does not show the real you You can perfect your script like you are winning an Academy Award but reaching the end goal is much more than that Other factors like personality intrinsic motivation vision skills and support affect the roadmap to success Being yourself is the most important characteristic because your enthusiasm and drive for success naturally shines through The interview process was an interesting concept because I learned a lot about the company Some brands may have
