Microsoft that they had listened and were embracing change Out manoeuvred out fought but not out thought the DeLorean was a welcome sight In the auditorium closing the keynote section of the event was Prof Brian Cox who delivered an inspirational lecture and innovative message Centred on the ideas that throughout history people who challenge what is deemed to be conventional wisdom are often chastised but in the end their work is appreciated and held in high regard Technical Focus The afternoon was to be dominated by more technically focused work streams Of particular interest to me were the talks around DevOps and Cross Platform Development These provided the opportunity to listen and learn from key technical staff at Microsoft on their work These streams involved demonstrations of working code as well as the theory and best practices driving them invaluable to any developer During the afternoon on more than one occasion a technical evangelist speaking on behalf of Microsoft at a Microsoft conference asked for a show of hands of developers who used Visual Studio the key environment for any developer working in the Microsoft stack This is a no brainer but for a corporation to ask at a corporate event how many developers use their product immediately it became clear they were asking if they still were relevant to how we as developers operate Enthusiastically my hand was in the air A learning organisation One which is willing to embrace change is what we all want You want the start button back working on it here is windows 8 1 Agility and the Customer Regardless of methodology principle or practice as a software developer this event resonates with me Work learn and work better Personally and as a team we could all be found guilty at some point of sitting back and admiring our own achievements but if an organisation the size of Microsoft are embracing agility then shouldn t we all Decisions made should be revised and accessed in the cold light of day Introspection is key Focus on the costumer and delivering what is valuable to them Embracing Future Change Upon reflection this relates directly to the output of the new CEO Nadella rather than the bombastic approach of Balmer who previously filled this role In closing similar to Future Decoded this post has become a series of questions are we willing to respond to change Are we prepared to serve the customers that influence how we operate The answer itself doesn t reside within a framework or methodology but that our efforts should be focused on value and how we provide it The rising tide lifts all boats but I would rather be ready to embrace it than caught under the waves GaryB Senior Developer Related Posts Windows 10 Hardware Partners 3 June 2015 Design is a behaviour not a department 17 February 2015 Reasons to be Creative 2015 Part 1 24 September 2015 Back to blog list The team Topics Net 1 Awards 1

  • Design is a behaviour not a department · IRW Blog
More recently the concept of design as an agent for change is gaining traction In training to be a designer and indeed during subsequent time spent working in a creative role or within a creative team a specific and specialised skill set is assembled developed and fine tuned To quote one of my Art School Professors the role of the designer is one of eternal dissatisfaction but permanent optimism Such a mindset does by definition encourage or require the adoption of a particular way of thinking and set of skills including the ability to visualise iterate and fail quickly to make decisions courageously and perhaps most importantly to synthesise information in a manner which results in a satisfactory product service or solution IRW s design approach Within the world of software development design obviously takes on a multitude of meanings from obvious applications such as database design and development of user experience solutions and user interface designs which are different but that s a blog for another day through to the particular approach taken to project management At IRW we are using design to do more that that We use it in our approach to eliciting user requirements and to structuring conversation and discussion with various extreme users involved in systems proposed use cycle In doing so clients feel more engaged and the resulting information and insight is richer and of more value Don McIntyre Creative Lead Related Posts Gary attends Microsoft Future Decoded event 10 December 2014 Windows 10 Hardware Partners 3 June 2015 Reasons to be Creative 2015 Part 1 24 September 2015 Back to blog list The team Topics Net 1 Awards 1 Azure 1 benefits 1 Cloud 1 CMS 1 Codegarden 1 collaboration 1 Collaboration 2 Computex 1 conference 2 css 2 Data 1 Discovery Process
