to win on the second hole with a solid 8 foot putt for a birdie three The first day was interrupted when a torrential downpour hit the course and play was suspended due to flooded greens but the storm soon passed and because Luton Hoo is a free draining course we were able to resume play after just over an hour Although the European Q School at Frilford Heath impacted on the field size the standard of play remained high and it was newly turned professional Luke Johnson and James Watts who led at the end of the day on 4 under par Martin Sell and Sam Watts led the pursuing pack on 3 under the card and they had Jamie Abbott and Ryan Boyns close by on 2 under so with a tightly bunched leader board it was really anyone s to win or indeed to lose In the relatively calm conditions that prevailed on the second day scoring improved and James Adams who started the day on one under par put together a great round of 5 under to set a clubhouse target of 6 under par although he was actually unhappy with his finish Adams was the enjoying a superb round of golf and a great Eagle 3 on the seventeenth put him at 5 under for the round and he gave himself an excellent chance for a birdie from 4 feet at the last but missed it and that miss would ultimately cost him the title Jamie Abbott joined Adams on 6 under adding a solid bogie free 4 under par 69 to his first round of 71 and the pair settled down to wait for the final group and see if they would make it to at least a play off In the final group James Watts was having a Pick and Mix round of golf with birdies pars and bogies up until he arrived at the fifteenth which he proceeded to birdie and followed that with 2 more at sixteen and seventeen to finish on 6 under par and make it a three man play off for the title The sudden death play off was to be over the tenth and eighteenth holes and after they all secured pars on the tenth they moved to the eighteenth and that s where it was settled with Abbott holing from some 8 feet for a winning birdie three It s always a pleasure to come back to Luton Hoo and the course was a credit to the green keeping staff who despite the wet conditions presented the players with an excellent course to test their skills on There was a Jamega Amateur event held on the first day of the main event and it was a delighted Steve Rixon who proved to be triumphant with a solid 36 stableford points Steve won a 3 day trip to the Algarve to play in an Algarve Pro Golf Tour event and that will include staying in a 4

  • Armitage Pinches Five Lakes Win
first chill of late autumn to Five Lakes but on this bitterest of days the scoring improved quite considerably Armitage courtesy of his first round had an early start and stormed round the Five Lakes course and came in with that perfect 7 under par 65 to set the clubhouse bar at 4 under par Local hero Will Boniface who was playing in the same group as Armitage also shot a much better score compiling a solid 5 under par 67 to get to 2 under par for the tournament Both players had the wait now to see firstly if Armitage could be caught and secondly if Boniface could remain in the prize fund Another local lad Dale Whitnell also improved on the second day with a 4 under par 68 that saw him join Boniface on 2 under and both would eventually end up in the prize money Tom Hayward was next into the clubhouse with a fine 3 under par 69 that saw him leapfrog both Whitnell and Boniface but end up just one shot shy of the clubhouse leader Armitage In the final group Ben Smith was having a miserable time of it and Jack Hiscock despite a great Eagle 3 at the last had left it to late to challenge Armitage In the final group of the day Jamie Abbott arrived at the seventeenth on 3 under par knowing that a birdie at either of the remaining two holes would force a play of against Armitage But the bubble burst for Abbott when he bogied the hole which left him now needing an Eagle on the par 5 last to get into a play off and to his credit he managed a birdie to tie Hayward in second place It was a pleasure to be at
