  • “Oh Danny Boy”
of the day with a 7 under par 65 Although after being 10 under after 12 holes Gaunt felt a tinge of disappointment at not posting a better score James Heath led the pursuing pack on 6 under with back up coming in the form of Robbie Busher Rhodri Fieldhouse Will Fox and Portugal s very own Gocalo Pinto who all posted 5 under par The second day looked like being more of a test with stronger winds forecasted and the threat of rain on the horizon As play got underway the breeze freshened and turned the sleeping Salgados course into a strong test and with the sirens of the deep calling to the players from the many lakes it was going to be tough going and the winner would be worthy of the title The Salgados Classic Champion Some notable scores were recorded early on including young Craig Lawrie who added a second 71 to finish on two under par and tied eleventh and the talented amateur George Abbott who finished on 5 under par and tied third in this very high quality field A trio of Portugals finest Tiago Cruz Antonio Sobrinho and Goncalo Pinto battled away and eventually finished tied for sixth place Of the leaders it was a case of battening down the hatches and grinding away in the ever freshening breeze and the eventual winner Gaunt was well used to windy conditions having learnt his golf in Australia Gaunt was never really troubled and a one under par back nine saw him safely home by two shots from his Challenge Tour colleague Duncan Stewart who tamed the Beast with a solid 3 under par 69 This also put Stewart a couple of shots ahead of James Heath Rhodri Fieldhouse and the amateur George Abbott It

  • James Hands out a Maw-ling
as has been seen in recent years on the main tours of the world The second day started with showers but they soon cleared to leave a beautifully sunny day for the players and we were looking forward to an exciting days play Michael Downes was the first to show his intentions and put together a great round of 7 under par 64 to rocket up the leader board stake a claim for some of the prize fund Tiago Cruz knocked Downes off his perch adding a 4 under par 67 to his first round of 68 to finish the tournament on 7 under par The talented young German Max Eichmeier raised the bar again to 8 under par after carding a fine 5 under par 66 in the penultimate group However James Maw was always able to handle the pressure of leading the tournament and put together a clinical round of 2 under par 69 to win by 3 shots although he let slip a couple of bogeys in the last few holes Boavista as its name implies has fabulous views and is a superb venue offering great golf an outstanding fitness centre and numerous other sports including Archery The reception staff led by Charlotte Charlie Milsom provide a friendly and welcoming service with a wide and varied menu available at very reasonable prices With luxury villas available for rent it is the perfect place for a golfing holiday either with the family or as a group of golfing friends We would like to thank the head green keeper Joaquim Costa and his staff who have worked extremely hard to provide an immaculate golf course for the players The course Marshall Howard Start and his team could not have been more helpful in setting up the impressive scoreboard and

  • Harry Casey to Enjoy a Slice of Madeira
under The leader board is tightly bunched and that means the tournament is still wide open and with so many players in the mix it is difficult to predict a winner The final day dawned to reveal bright sunny skies with a warm sun bathing the golf course and with light winds we were expecting the scoring to be good Jarmo Sandelin found some form to take to Leopards Creek scoring a very respectable 2 under par 70 As the afternoon wore on some players were making a move towards the top of the leader board including Portugal s Hugo Santos who posted a final total of 7 under par to set a realistic clubhouse target Former European Tour player Van Phillips joined Santos on 7 under and the news from the course was that Harry Casey needed to birdie the last to post 8 under and assume the lead This he duly did and with overnight leader Miguel Gaspar and the German Eichmeier fading away it looked pretty much sewn up for Casey In the final group it was only Craig Farrelly who had a faint chance of catching Casey and forcing a play off but he would have to make an Albatross on the par 5 last and that is a very rare bird indeed Farrelly made a great attempt at the virtually impossible by hitting the green in 2 and making a great Eagle to force his way into a tie for second place with Santos and Phillips So this second win for Casey put him in an unassailable position at the top of the Order of Merit and secured him the Madeira Islands Open start in 2015 courtesy of The PGA of Portugal and we all wish him all the very best of good fortune As
