  • Van Delivers First Jamega Win!
the autumnal fog that prevails at this time of the year play got under way and despite the ideal conditions for scoring no one was tearing up the course and after nine holes of the second round it was impossible to predict the winner As it came down to the wire it was still too close to call with Phillips and Surry neck and neck on 9 under par with Busher and Hayward on 7 under snapping at their heels Busher was the first to show a chink in his armour by taking a double bogey 6 on the fifteenth but immediately hit back with a birdie on the sixteenth and so was still in it with two holes still to play Hayward was on a roll with birdies at the sixteenth and seventeenth getting him to 7 under and he looked a dead cert for at least a tie for second place but an untimely bogey on the last dropped him down to fourth spot on his own Still tied at 9 under par Surry and Phillips came to the seventeenth a short par 4 and good birdie chance so with both Busher and Phillips safely in play Surry went for a big tee shot to get as close to the green as possible but came out of the shot and saw it disappear deep into the trees down the right A double bogey followed for Surry which left Phillips in the comfortable position of having a 2 shot lead with one hole left to play and he made no mistake making a comfortable par to win by 2 from Surry and Busher Cumberwell is one of our favourite courses and it has so much to offer in as much as it has got 4 separate 9 holes to

  • Sell is “The Play-off King” at The Essex
Moul to falter and it was David Dixon who found some form and carded a faultless 7 under par 66 to set a clubhouse target of 6 under par but Dixon was left to rue his poor first round effort of a 1 over the card 74 Mike Bullen and Martin Sell in the penultimate group of the day were having a rare old scrap with Sell increasing his lead over Bullen to 5 shots with the back nine to play But then came a complete reversal of form with Bullen reducing the gap to just 2 with the eighteenth to come and with the distinct possibility of an Eagle on the very reachable par 5 the battle could go one of several ways In the end though both players unbelievably Eagled the hole and so the margin of 2 shots remained and Sell set a new clubhouse lead for Jamie Moul in the remaining 3 ball to overtake Moul looked fairly comfortable with a 2 shot lead and 3 to play but a bogey on the sixteenth shook him up a little and left him needing 2 pars to win A par at the seventeenth left him needing to literally chip it down the par 5 eighteenth for an easy par 5 and the win but the driver came out and then the ensuing trouble and the resulting bogey left Sell in an unexpected play off again To cut a long story short Moul again found trouble on the eighteenth the second play off hole and this left Sell with the easiest of wins and the title for the second year in a row The Essex also provided the stage for the Single Figure Golfer 2014 Finals and two very steady rounds of 71 two under and 73 level

  • Laskey is “The Birdie Man” of Mentmore
him a sense of independence and a new found confidence Being with other sick ill disabled children made him realise he wasn t alone and there were in fact children worse off than him He came back from the trip quite literally a different person Dreamflight really did change Aidan s life And to any person out there who may think it s just a trip to Disneyworld going on some rides and swimming with some dolphins please believe me it isn t DREAMFLIGHT really is a life changing experience for the children and Aidan can certainly vouch for that Aidan went into remission in early 2010 decided to concentrate more more on his golf Starting at a 25 Handicap He spent endless hours hours on the driving range playing out on the course at every available opportunity Unfortunately 2012 saw the return of Aidan s illness but not to be outdone this time around by its debilitating effects he continued golfing as much as possible often spending in excess of 5hrs per day at the course In between helping out at home going into hospital regularly for treatment going to University where he s studying to be a sports photographer he still manages to play golf at least 5 times per week When he isn t playing golf he ll be either on the driving range or chipping putting in the family garden Having never had a single golf lesson in his life and through sheer determination he now has a 2 Handicap Never give up Never give in That s Aidan s motto Aidan was paired with Steve Surry and Mark Laskey and he was treated to a master class display by Laskey who swept around the Rosebery course at Mentmore Golf and Country Club in an impressive 8 under par 64 to lead by one shot from the previous days Pro Am winner Liam Harper who repeated his winning score of 7 under par 65 The benign weather conditions that prevailed during the day enabled more than half the field to score under par and so it was set fair for an exciting second day and it was impossible to predict the winner On the second day Laskey started off in fine style with a birdie and an Eagle on the first 2 holes and although Harper also Eagled the second he found himself a further shot adrift of his playing partner Laskey Laskey then stumbled with a bogey on the third but recovered the situation with another birdie on the fourth hole but then after parring the fifth laskey suffered a bogey double bogey combo that rocked him back on his heels He recovered his composure to finish the front nine with two pars to remain at 8 under for the tournament Harper meanwhile birdied the last 2 holes of the front nine to turn in 32 and be 3 shots ahead of Laskey and feeling quietly confident of at least keeping Laskey at bay on

  • Tournament Reports
so the Shoot out between the two West Country boys David Dixon and Martin Sell went to Sell after a brilliant low scoring display by both men Essendon Golf and Country Club is a brilliant complex with two excellent golf courses set within a fabulous estate at the centre of which is the imposing clubhouse where you can refresh yourself after an enjoyable round of golf with excellent reasonably priced food and beverage A walk in the Park for The Ice Man Thor Gissurarson Iceland was named after the Hammer wielding God of Thunder but Gissurarson was only wielding his golf clubs at Calcot Park this week on the way to winning his first Jamega Tour event Prior to the tournament we held a very successful Pro am for the club that was enjoyed by all the competitors and we hope that Calcot Park will make this a permanent curtain raiser to our events in the future Thor Gissurarson pictured after his win at Calcot Park At close of play on the first day it was Ryan Harrison who led the tournament with an excellent 5 under par 65 to lead by one from Ben Martin and by two from Greg Hughes Simon Griffiths Craig Hinton and the eventual winner Thor Gissurarson A large pack of some fifteen players who scored par or better were going to be in hot pursuit of the leaders on the second day Included in that pack was the young amateur and Calcot member Harry Chapple who scored a magnificent 2 under par 68 to earn a lie in on day two You would normally expect the leaders to move forward on the second day after gaining experience on the very slick greens of this stunning golf course but for many it was a case of engaging reverse gear Ryan Harrison Ben Martin and Greg Hughes all seemed to lose their way in the heat of battle but several players did seize the moment to claw their way up the leader board One of these was Charlie Simpson who had two Eagles in his final round of 3 under par and one of those was a hole in one on the tricky seventeenth No car but just a Big Cigar and a 100 bonus for Simpson to add to his winnings for finishing tied fifth Luke Joy was another who clawed his way back from a poor first round by adding a solid 4 under par 66 and banish some of the disappointment of losing out in a play off at Cumberwell park Local amateur and hero Harry Chapple added a fine one under par 69 to finish tied in fourth place much to the delight of the local supporters enjoying the offerings of the Scoopers Outdoor Events Bar It was however the new boy Gissurarson who was steadily moving along and when he reached the seventeenth tee with a two shot lead and he was about to set a possible winning target He had
