    Traditional upholstery techniques have been developed over centuries and involves creating the upholstery layers by hand using materials such as animal hair webbing and tacks While traditional upholstery can be more time consuming it will last a lot longer than modern upholstery sometimes over 50 years As a contrast modern upholstery can be a lot quicker to produce as instead of creating layers of padding most often a piece of foam is attached to the chair and then covered While steps can be taken to improve the lifespan of the modern piece such as covering to protect the foam from dust and sun damage it is likely to last between 3 8 years Some people prefer to mix both traditional and modern upholstery by using products such rubberised hair which is a mix of hair and fibre set in rubber to form sheets This contains the traditional hair but in a form that is easily attached in the way foam is Another option is to use needled hair on hessian which is the traditional 100 animal hair densely woven onto a hessian backing This is a particularly great option for arms and other areas that need an even layer of filling Upholstery Where should a beginner start While some people may have a family piece that they would like to upholster we generally recommend starting with something small such as a footstool for your first piece This way you can learn the layers of the upholstery pad and this knowledge can be transferred to bigger pieces How to pick a frame When looking at chair frames place one hand on the top of the back and the other on the front of the seat and press gently There should be a little movement but if it is very loose then the frame is less likely to be in great condition after you have stripped it down What tools do I need to start my upholstery job There are a variety of tools that are used during upholstery some depending on if you choose modern or traditional upholstery The ones that are most commonly used include webbing strainer webbing stretcher magnetic hammer tack lifters steel pincers and needles We do sell all of the tools you will need to complete your job and also offer tool kits in three different sizes to purchase everything you ll need at a reduced cost Choosing top Fabric For a beginner project it is important to keep in mind your top fabric Any fabric with a pattern means that you need to take time matching the lines to ensure a professional finish With very detailed fabric this can be a challenge Tuition To learn the basics of upholstery we supply a variety of books and DVDs which show the different skills you will need to use on our website However we do offer courses which help you to see live the different techniques needed to create the upholstery pad and sometimes more importantly to show
