on extreme weather patterns For us and throughout England and Scotland in 2012 most things that could have gone wrong with the crop did and product quality and field yields were dramatically affected Neither William Hartley nor the Swaythorpe directors can remember as poor a season Conversely the 2013 crop was drilled into land still moist from a horribly wet winter but then the sun shone and the peas established a good root system The real heat didn t hit us until early July and from the moment we started harvesting we realised it was going to be a race against time Yields were good from the start but thirty degrees of heat is too intense for the delicate plants which tended to shut down and endure the days and then mature like crazy during the cooler nights Across the UK growing groups were in the tragic position of having to by pass perfectly good crops because they were maturing too fast and harvesting capacities were at their absolute maximum It is an impossible and heart breaking situation when you have to jump fields knowing that an edible product will be left for the combine but there is nothing to be done and the sun just kept beating down which meant that the peas scheduled for harvesting in front of us were ready without let up As a processor we experienced record daily volumes through the factory very good OEE levels efficiencies and the product was very lean with only 6 needing an extra colour sort Great credit goes to the factory operations team because it is no mean feat getting product down to temperature and keeping it cold in such hot ambient conditions We all took our hats off to Matthew Heywood who has the unenviable task of deciding

Following 2012 the wettest year on record we experienced yet another record that being March 2013 being the coldest on record Sowing of the Vining Pea crop usually commences around the 15th March but exceptionally cold conditions delayed this start Sowing actually began on 5th April due to the 6 inches of snow we had on 23rd March Although this late start is far from ideal it is a much better situation than in 2012 when we were unable to sow any crops between 3rd April and 8th May due to unprecedented rainfall Patience has been required this year as soil conditions are still showing signs of damage from 2012 with the soil profile best described as lifeless Peas are a very fickle crop and are extremely susceptible to compaction something we are very mindful of when establishing the crop We have had a welcome period of rain in Yorkshire because the land has been so wet for so long then it was blasted by relentless winds for the last 5 weeks the soil profile has dried out to depth and as a result we are now drilling the crop deeper and deeper in search of moisture This lack of moisture on the soil surface also reduces the efficacy of pre emergence Herbicides which is a worry as the effectiveness of follow up post emergence Herbicides is limited this could result in contaminant problems at harvest which the processing line has to deal with The factory will tailor the 2 in line colour laser sorters to deal with the potential contaminants that each field could contain plus continuous inspection of product will guarantee it is processed to the customer s specification The recent milder weather has allowed drilling to gather pace as soil temperatures have risen considerably resulting in some
