whilst JNP Group consulting engineers were requested by Stoneforce to design and detail a new basement swimming pool directly adjacent to the existing basement but to a lower level sandwiched between the boundaries of the property and the rear garage The pool roof was required to support the existing garden area and thus maintain the current use The Site The site was a corner plot at the junction of Avenue Road and Norfolk Road with the proposed basement to be excavated between the existing rear garage main house garden wall boundary and public footway boundary The basement footprint was the size of the existing garden and was to be taken to a lower level than the existing basement The Design The existing building basement foundations had to be checked against the proposed new basement depths to assess whether underpinning would be required before any works began The confined site condition had to be considered with the method of construction regarding plant operations delivery and removal materials The existing garage garden wall and public footpath excavation boundaries were to be provided with a contiguous pile wall system to retain the perimeter and allow safe excavation of the new basement area However the pile wall was designed as a propped cantilever to reduce costs This required the capping beam designed buy JNP Group to be cast before the main excavations could be carried out The capping beam was detailed to receive the basement capping slab approximately 300mm below ground level The capping beam was also required to be temporarily propped by steel beams designed and detailed as temporary props by JNP Group These were removed once the walls and slabs were in place Contiguous piling was also required where the deeper pool basement abutted the existing basement but these piles were to
