  • Remediation of former Chemical Plant, Wilton - KDC
    reinforced concrete All of the hydrocarbon impacted soils were treated on site using bioremediation Due to the extent of perched ground water on site there was a requirement to treat and discharge some 3 300m3 of perched groundwater Excavation Remediation of Impacted Soils Impacted soils were excavated and placed into windrows with the addition of a bioremediation substrate to assist the bioremediation process Windrows were constructed and mixed using specialist attachments on a tracked excavator Windrows were maintained and processed regularly to provide optimum conditions for the bioremediation process to work On site hydrocarbon analysis using state of the art equipment was carried out to direct the extents of the excavation and a sess the progress of the remedial works Validation samples were sent to external laboratories for independent verification All treated soils were remediated successfully to our risk assessed targets of 0 005mg kg Benzene 0 8mg kg Toluene 0 5mg kg Ethylbenzene 1 4mg kg m p xylene 1 0mg kg o xylene 0 07mg kg Phenol and 0 08mg kg Styrene Water Treatment All excavations quickly attracted perched ground water therefore to successfully and safely excavate the impacted soils this water had to be removed As the water was impacted by hydrocarbons treatment was required prior to discharge to the sites foul drainage system The ground water was successfully treated using a combination of Settlement Tanks Oil Water Separators Sand Filters and Granular Activated Carbon A total of 3 300m3 of water was successfully treated and discharged Hard Standing Removal Historic underground concrete structures and bases were encountered during the excavation works This concrete was broken out removed and crushed to 6F2 standard External laboratory analysis of the crushed material proved its suitability for reuse in constructing the new site drainage Cut Off Trench There was evidence

    Home Customers Case Studies Remediation Violet Street Paisley Violet Street Paisley CLIENT Taylor Wimpey DATE Jan 09 Apr 09 DURATION 16 weeks VALUE 200k Background The site was historically used as a dye works and car maintenance garage The site was to be redeveloped for residential housing however previous Site Investigations highlighted the presence of chlorinated solvent and hydrocarbon contaminated soil and water which had the potential to pose a risk to future site occupants KDC completed an options study for the redevelopment and concluded that ex situ bioremediation of contaminated materials and the segregation and re use of noncontaminated material would be the most viable solution A programme of groundwater treatment was also proposed Public Protection The site was surrounded by high density housing with three schools and a nursery within 600m This required a robust traffic management plan and constant site security Glasgow City Council and SEPA were included in discussions and proposals early on in the design process and endorsed the site remedial design KDC were involved in the production of a circular issued to local residents to inform them of the works and provide a point of contact should they have any concerns Treatment Process Careful excavation and segregation of contaminated and non contaminated soil was undertaken to maximize re use of suitable material and limit the volume requiring bioremediation Some 2 500m3 of contaminated material was successfully treated to enable subsequent re use as fill material for the follow on construction works Groundwater was collected from excavation bases and treated This was stored in suitable containers to allow chemical analysis to be undertaken Discharge consent was provided by the Water Authority to allow discharge to sewer Progress and Validation Progress of the treatment was monitored through the use of temperature probing on site chemical analysis
