    purchased by Sir James Lowther in 1764 and was let to his agent John Wordsworth the father of William Wordsworth William Wordsworth was born at the house on the 7th April 1770 and was the second eldest of five 5 in the family Dorothy his sister was born on Christmas Day the following year Richard the eldest was born in 1768 John was born in 1772 and Christopher in 1774 Their mother Ann died in 1778 when William was eight 8 years old and the children were then sent to stay with relatives The house was never owned by the Wordsworth it came with the job and was always owned by the Lowther Family The house itself is the handsomest in this very pretty west Cumbrian town with its beautiful Georgian front and imposing gate piers You can visit the fine rooms and the see the furniture with most of it being owned by Wordsworth himself and the fine portraits of Wordsworth and the various other Lake s writers Light meals and drinks are available and there is also a shop to purchase or browse Wordsworth items It is advisable to contact Wordsworth House prior to your visit if there
