  • Driverless Cars to Become Reality
although in its early stages could be available on a commercial scale in around 20 years and would cut fuel bills for motorists by improving driving style and optimising journey routes The decision to allow self driving cars on public roads has come about through Science and Universities Minister David Willets who has pushed to Department for Transport to allow the team responsible for Oxford University s RobotCar to take their research to the next level and test it in real world conditions The RobotCar is an electric Nissan Leaf fitted with a number of sensors and cameras The passenger can then programme the vehicle through an iPad application specifying a route and allowing the journey to begin The car is able to recognise obstacles including pedestrians and will stop automatically if it detects an obstruction It provides a smoother ride than regular cars and it is expected that self driven cars could safely travel closely in convoy to reduce congestion and improve fuel efficiency with aerodynamics Road Safety Minister Stephen Hammond has said This technology is in its infancy in the UK but we recognise the great opportunities it could present for helping to improve safety reduce congestion and cut vehicle emissions That is why we are working closely with the project team on their trials of these vehicles to learn more about the potential regulatory and legal implications this work could have in the long term Though the sight of driverless cars on the roads in significant numbers may be some decades away the possibility is a distinct reality What are your thoughts about autonomous vehicles Get in touch with us through Facebook or Twitter and let us know This post appears in Industry News This post has been tagged driverless cars autonomous cars self driving cars driverless

  • European Car Sales at New Low
Sales at New Low Blog Home Previous Next Toyota Ford and Peugeot Citroen saw European car sales hit a new low last month seeing 2013 begin with a decline of 8 5 According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association ACEA January 2013 was the slowest since 1990 with registrations falling to 918 280 new cars This is largely due to cutbacks in European production capacity as regional sales fell 26 for Ford and 16 each for Peugeot and Toyota Car demand in the Eurozone is expected to contract further as 2013 continues and the majority of manufacturers predict a shrink of between 3 and 5 Despite this bleak outlook there are hopes that the European economic upturn will eventually have knock on effects for the car industry Indeed some German manufacturers are already proving themselves resilient in this harsh climate BMW sales are rose 9 4 in January and Mercedes Benz showed a 4 7 rise so the forecast is not so grim as it may initially seem Economic commentators and motor industry professionals will continue to track sales trends and the effect of economic recovery on new car sales Though the climate is still uncertain modest signs of recovery are beginning to show For more information on this and other industry news stay tuned to this blog and our Twitter and Facebook accounts This post appears in Industry News This post has been tagged industry news car sales eurozone european economy BMW Mercedes Benz new car sales This post was written by marc Marc Yates Leave a Reply Blog Categories Accessories Air Conditioning C Reader V C Recorder II Car Diagnostic Tools EVAP Testing Garage Tools Hints Tips Hybrid Cars Industry News Ingersoll Rand Launch C Reader VI Launch Services Launch UK Launch X431 Euro Pad Reference Books X431

  • Scotland to Install Electric Car Charging Points
Furthermore 100 funding will be available to homeowners who wish to install a charging point at home This radical proposal is to be funded by Transport Scotland and the Department for Transport s Office of Low Emission Vehicles and a total of 2 6m is to be invested with a view to achieve decarbonisation of road transport by 2050 Transport Minister for Scotland Keith Brown said I look forward to the day when the only vehicles on Scotland s roads are electric vehicles and this funding will be a massive step towards that vision Mr Brown also announced the launch of a new website ChargePlace Scotland which will allow members of the public to find their nearest charging points It is hoped that this coupled with the website s information on financial incentives will encourage more people to make the switch to electric vehicles Whilst this will inevitably be a big step forward in the Scottish government s aim to meet their climate change targets Environmental campaigners have stressed that major changes to public transport and a push to encourage drivers to leave the car at home entirely should not be forgotten Co convenor of the Scottish Greens Patrick Harvie points out Electric vehicles can only properly cut our transport emissions if we have more renewable electricity on the grid and tariffs to encourage owners to charge them at non peak times It s therefore essential that ministers put traffic demand management back into their plans and beef up their support for public transport and safer cycling Do you think these plans are a leap forward that will lead Scotland and eventually the rest of the UK to cut carbon emissions from transport by the middle of the century Contact us through Twitter or Facebook to let us know what
