  • Lancashire VS Derbyshire - 24 May 2015 - Lancashire County Cricket Club
by Ashwell Prince and Alviro Petersen dominated the second day s play at Southport as the pair set a new 3rd wicket partnership record on their way to batting Lancashire into a strong position just 22 runs behind Derbyshire on 348 for 4 The visitors started the day on 335 9 and Matthew Critchley hit out to great effect to take Derbyshire to a fourth batting point and also frustrate the Lancashire attack adding 35 runs for the last wicket to finish 370 all out from 106 3 overs Critchley was dropped at deep backward square leg by Tom Bailey on 25 just after Derbyshire had reached 350 but he was last man out for 41 steering a short ball from Jarvis high to Karl Brown on the third man boundary Mark Footitt supplied the necessary support to finish on 6 not out Paul Horton and Karl Brown faced a searching spell from Footitt and Tom Taylor when Lancashire began their reply with the ball swinging and seaming and both openers fell before lunch Horton departed with the score on 12 after edging Footitt to Chesney Hughes at 2nd slip while Brown nicked Taylor to wicketkeeper Harvey Hosein for 6 to leave Lancashire in early trouble at 18 2 Ashwell Prince and Alviro Petersen steadied matters adding 50 runs in 10 overs with some assured strokeplay before lunch and the pair dominated the afternoon to extend their partnership to an unbroken 192 runs with Prince 99 not out and Petersen 85 not out at tea Prince continued his outstanding form this season to produce another batting masterclass and rarely looked in trouble He hit young off spinner Critchley for a straight six and brought up his half century from 70 balls when reverse sweeping Wainwright s first ball of the afternoon for four Two back foot drives for four by Prince through the covers in one Footitt over were just a couple of memorable moments from an outstanding innings as he reached his century in the first over after the break from 138 balls with 15 fours and one six In 9 Championship innings this season Prince has scored 697 runs so far with three centuries and four fifties a sure sign of a man in top form Prince s innings was matched by that of Petersen who produced a chanceless classy innings of fierce drives and pulls Petersen reached three figures and his second Lancashire century from 156 balls with 15 fours soon after tea and the pair set a new Southport first class record when their 3rd wicket partnership reached 202 runs Derbyshire simply had no answer to the onslaught but they battled away throughout the day and did their best to contain the duo setting increasingly defensive fielding positions as the day wore on It was Tom Taylor who finally made the breakthrough midway through the evening session when Petersen edged behind to Hosein on 113 made over 239 minutes off 176 balls to make Lancashire 276 3 and 94 runs in arrears Their partnership of 258 is a Lancashire record for the 3rd wicket against Derbyshire beating the 256 between Graeme Fowler and Neil Fairbrother at Chesterfield in 1989 More importantly it has put Lancashire in a very strong position going in to the third day If the visitors had not suffered enough punishment Steven Croft then launched Critchley for 6 on to the railway lines and then hammered another maximum off his replacement Wainwright into the Harrod Road gardens Croft departed soon afterwards lbw to Taylor for 22 off 28 balls but Lancashire continued to keep their momentum going with Alex Davies playing positively to be 28 not out at stumps Ashwell Prince was still there at the end on 156 not out having reached his third Lancashire score of 150 in the last 12 months and the tenth of his career shortly before the close and he has now scored more runs in the County Championship than any other player since the start of the 2014 season Ken Grime Lancashire Trafalgar Road Ground Southport Sun 24 May 2015 11 00 English LV County Championship Division Two 2015 V Lancashire win by an innings and 15 runs Derbyshire L ancashire fought back well on the first day of this LV County Championship match after Derbyshire had made a great start to the day at Southport Skipper Billy Godleman won the toss and then shared a century partnership with Billy Slater to give the visitors a flying start Kyle Jarvis was the pick of the Lancashire attack during the first hour and could consider himself unfortunate not have made a breakthrough on several occasions finding the inside and outside edge of Godleman s bat from consecutive deliveries in the sixth over the ball scuttling away to the boundary on each occasion The captain responded in positive fashion fastening onto anything over pitched or short and scoring quickly as Derbyshire raced to 50 0 by the 10th over Slater by comparison was more circumspect during the first part of the morning but having settled in played several attractive strokes to be the first to reach a half century which arrived from just 51 balls as the Derbyshire openers prospered to reach 79 0 after the first hour It forced Steven Croft to turn to the spin of Arron Lilley as early as the 14th over but the Lancashire off spinner found turn straight away to trouble both batsmen Simon Kerrigan also entered the attack during the 30 minutes before lunch but neither spinner could find a breakthrough as Godleman who reached his fifty from 88 balls played watchfully to reach the interval on 60 with Slater 63 in an unbroken partnership of 129 The Lancashire attack finally found some reward in the fifth over of the afternoon when Slater edged a Tom Bailey delivery to Paul Horton at first slip after making 69 of an opening stand that had realised 141 runs Then three overs later Jarvis

It was to get worse for Derbyshire s Australian fast bowler as an astonishing 29 runs arrived from his next over the 19th of the innings as Croft and Faulkner ran riot Croft hit the first ball for 4 before Faulkner hit a 6 over long on Rimmington then bowled an accidental head high full no ball also that went for four and then watched Faulkner clobber another maximum off the next ball Shell shocked Derbyshire then saw Wayne White start the final over with five wides while two more fours by Croft meant an astonshing 49 runs had been plundered from the final two overs of the innings Croft finished on 94 not out from just 51 balls with two sixes and nine fours a career best in his 107th consecutive T20 match for Lancashire Faulkner made 47 from 30 balls with 3 sixes and 2 fours and the pair s 151 run partnership was Lancashire s highest for the 4th wicket in T20 beating the 131 by Croft and Karl Brown at Derby last year Derbyshire s reply faltered immediately as Durston edged his first and Faulkner s second delivery to Alex Davies behind the stumps Tillakaratne Dilshan and Chesney Hughes steadied matters with an alliance of 36 runs in 4 overs before Dilshan top edged Tom Bailey with Davies taking an easy catch Hughes and Billy Godleman added 42 inside 6 overs but when Hughes hit Arron Lilley high to Ashwell Prince at long on to perish for 39 at the start of the 11th over Derbyshire s challenge faltered significantly at 79 3 with 123 still required from 53 balls The Lancashire attack relentlessly turned the screw from theron with Stephen Parry the main beneficiary taking a career best 4 16 as wickets fell steadily The end came when debutant Saqib Mahmood took his first Lancashire wicket Palladino edging behind to seal a comprehensive 67 run victory as the visitors subsided to 134 all out after 18 2 overs Lancashire Lightning Emirates Old Trafford Manchester Fri 12 Jun 2015 18 30 English Domestic NatWest T20 Blast 2015 V Lancashire win by 67 runs Derbyshire Falcons Derbyshire innings Batsman How Out Runs Balls 4 s 6 s SR Tillakaratne Dilshan Caught Alex Davies Bowled Tom Bailey 21 16 2 1 131 25 Wes Durston Caught Steven Croft Bowled James Faulkner 0 1 0 0 0 00 Chesney Hughes Caught Ashwell Prince Bowled Arron Lilley 39 32 6 0 121 88 Billy Godleman Bowled Tom Bailey 18 21 1 0 85 71 Wayne Madsen Caught Stephen Parry Bowled Steven Croft 18 12 0 1 150 00 Tom Poynton Caught Arron Lilley Bowled Stephen Parry 6 8 0 0 75 00 Scott Elstone Caught Arron Lilley Bowled Stephen Parry 7 5 1 0 140 00 Shiv Thakor L B W Stephen Parry 7 5 1 0 140 00 Wayne White Caught Steven Croft Bowled Stephen Parry 4 6 0 0 66 67 Tony Palladino Caught Alex Davies Bowled Saqib

fuller than his previous two deliveries and Horton drove fiercely getting a thick edge that flew high to the right of Agathangelou standing at 2nd slip The former Lancashire player flew to his right and took a diving one handed catch somewhere in the region where 3rd slip would have stood It was an outstanding catch and Horton could hardly believe he was out for 54 Brown and Alviro Petersen cemented Lancashire s good start with a further 83 runs inside 25 overs during the second session Quickly into his stride after lunch Brown reached his half century from 104 balls after twice square driving Taylor and then pulling a short delivery to the mid wicket boundary Petersen swept Naik for 4 and later lofted the off spinner to the long on boundary as 41 runs came from the first 7 overs after the interval The pair then consolidated their position in the face of an accurate 8 over spell from Jigar Naik and Atif Shiekh that restricted the batsmen to just three scoring shots The 50 partnership for the second wicket arrived from 96 balls at the midway point of the day which Brown celebrated by lofting Naik to the long on boundary Petersen had a moment of slight fortune when he pulled out of an attempted hook off a short delivery from Sheikh the ball clipping his upraised bat and flying down to fine leg for four Unfortunately for the bowler the next delivery ended up in exactly the same place but this time from an authentic leg glance Petersen looked to be well set so it was something of a surprise when he fell for 46 moving across the crease attempting to turn Naik to the leg side to be trapped in front with the score 174 2 Brown continued to play some lovely drives one off the front foot through mid wicket off Sheikh catching the eye to be 80 not out at tea with Lancashire 201 2 just six runs behind Brown continued in a similar vein after the resumption cutting Naik for 4 and then moving into the nineties with a six over long on Prince was also on the attack twice sweeping Naik for 4 in the 69th over and two overs later he on drove the off spinner sweetly to the mid wicket boundary to bring up the 50 partnership He then repeated the shot two overs later as the runs began to flow Brown s attempt to score his second first class century ended in a heart breaking fashion when a straight delivery from Raine kept low trapping him lbw on 96 with the score 248 3 in the 76th over to break a partnership that had realised 74 runs Prince continued to punish the Leicestershire bowling reaching his fifty from 67 balls before cutting Taylor to backward point for four and then driving the next delivery to the cover boundary at which point the umpires then decided to take the players off for bad light Play resumed six minutes later with Prince cutting the third ball from Sheikh for 4 and with Steven Croft hitting three fours in a quickfire 22 the pair brought up the 300 in the 86th over adding 55 in 11 overs for the fourth wicket before Croft chipped Naik to Shreikh at mid off It was the first time since Lancashire s valiant run chase against Surrey at the Oval which nearly landed the 2007 title that the first four Red Rose wickets have each added 50 plus runs Prince ended the day on 74 and with Alex Davies 7 steered Lancashire to 314 4 from 96 overs and a lead of 107 runs to be firmly in control of this game with two days to go At the close Karl Brown was philosophical about just missing out on a century I m obviously disappointed to get out on 96 he said but I don t think I could have done much with the ball I got It nipped back a bit and kept low I m just glad I didn t get it on 0 I m gutted I didn t score a hundred It s what every batsman sets out to do I feel that if I keep playing like this one is just around the corner Lancashire Emirates Old Trafford Manchester Sun 14 Jun 2015 12 30 English LV County Championship Division Two 2015 V Lancashire win by an innings and 157 runs Leicestershire J ames Faulkner took a hat trick Tom Bailey claimed four wickets and Kyle Jarvis took his 50th wicket of the season as Lancashire totally dominated the first day against Leicestershire at Emirates Old Trafford Play today began at 1 10pm partly due to the weather with light drizzle delaying proceedings for 40 minutes but also because of the experimental hours of play for this game with a scheduled start of 12 30pm and a 7 30pm finish each day The rain and dark conditions saw the floodlights on from the start after Leicestershire captain Mark Cosgrove won the toss at 12pm and elected to bat and they stayed on due to the cloudy weather that persisted throughout the day New ball pair Tom Bailey and Kyle Jarvis found some life in the pitch and movement through the air to trouble openers Angus Robson and Niall O Brien and Robson had an early escape when his edge off Bailey dissected second and third slip to race away for four It was Jarvis who struck first in the 4th over after the visitors had raced to 26 moving the ball away from the left handed O Brien who edged to wicketkeeper Alex Davies to depart for 14 the ball after he had confidently driven the same bowler for four Ned Eckersley playing back to Bailey edged to Paul Horton at first slip for 2 and was soon followed back to the dressing room by Robson who edged an attempted
