the ICC Intercontinental Cup on January 31 in Townsville Australia and are then playing a series of T20 games in Australia and the United Arab Emirates in preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup in India in March There is the mouthwatering potential for Ireland to play hosts India Pakistan Australia New Zealand in the tournament but first they must come top of a qualifying group that includes Oman Bangladesh and Netherlands O Brien said It was the first time in a couple of years that I ve had a proper break I got married and then went on tour so I ve had a good six weeks off The coaches have been good to me at Leicestershire and Ireland As everyone knows I m very enthusiastic about my cricket and it s been exciting to get back in training at Grace Road and seeing the lads again I m then away with Ireland from Sunday January 17 potentially until the start of April in Australia Dubai and then for the T20 World Cup selection permitting Ireland have played in a few World Cups before and to play in India at any time is a great experience We got through the initial qualification phase last summer but are actually playing in a tournament before the tournament so we ve qualified for the qualifying tournament if that makes sense We ve got to beat Bangladesh Holland and Oman in March and if we can do that we ll then get the chance to play India and Pakistan in front of huge crowds which would be incredible Australia and New Zealand are also in the group so we d have the chance to play against four excellent T20 sides The Ireland squad for games v Papua New Guinea and tour of UAE

Australia for three months before Christmas and I m heading back out to Sydney later this week after spending the festive period with my family said Ali It s always good to play outside on grass wickets over the winter and I ve had that opportunity through playing for the University of New South Wales in Sydney I was able to go out to Dubai last winter and it has been nice to get away again for a few months The ball comes on well in Australia there have been nice bouncy wickets and that has helped with my back foot game It s always good to get off to a good start and I managed to get some runs in the first game That took the pressure off and allowed me to enjoy it I ve been working hard it s a step below first class cricket but there is good competition and tough opposition Each team has an overseas player and I came across Nathan Buck who is playing for Manly There are other county cricketers doing well such as Nick Browne and Jaik Mickleburgh from Essex and Jade Dernbach from Surrey Angus Robson also plays for Eastern Suburbs but I haven t played against him yet Ali could be forgiven for not wanting 2015 to come to an end as it was a real breakthrough year for the talented batsman Leicestershire were well aware of Ali s talents through his performances in the Second XI and he transferred those into the First team Elite Performance Director Andrew McDonald named Ali in the first Foxes NatWest T20 Blast squad at Lancashire Lightning in May and the batter went on to make his First XI debut in all three forms of the game Ali located and cleared the boundary in the white ball competitions and also showed that he could construct a long innings such as his memorable knock of 84 against Gloucestershire which hauled the team back into the match It was that particular skill that really caught the eye in first class cricket Ali showed exemplary application at the wicket and one extremely gutsy knock where he helped to fend off the dangerous Mark Footitt as the team landed an enthralling home victory on the last day against Derbyshire will live long in the memory He scored 412 County Championship runs at an impressive average of 37 45 and displayed high levels of concentration in facing 1 064 deliveries in the process Ali also recorded three well constructed half centuries in his 12 innings Rather than reflect too heavily on the past Ali is now focused on the 2016 season and is already tapping into the vast experience within County s squad including Leicestershire s Australian contingent I finished the season quite well but all of that is forgotten now because it s all about the season coming up The first thing is trying to get in the team because there s really good depth in the

the future is bright who knows where we can go in the next few years The people I have dealt with at the club have all been really friendly and there is a family feel to the place Getting to know a new changing room in county cricket will be something new to me but I do have experience of different dressing room cultures around the world You always get an interesting mix in sport because people can range from 18 years of age up to 40 with different personalities You get people at different ages and stages of life and although I don t know everybody at Leicestershire yet there seems to be a similar mix to Lancashire with senior players and youngsters I ll be working with new players and new coaches in a different environment but I am looking forward to it There have been some connections as Wayne White was a roommate of mine at Lancashire I have spoken to Nathan Buck and I know Niall O Brien from him standing up to the stumps many times in the past Horton s first challenge will be to get himself acquainted with the county after moving down from the north west a region he has lived since joining Lancashire as a teenager The batsman will complete his winter programme at Grace Road to prepare himself for the official start of pre season in March That will be a key phase for the club when the entire first team squad comes together and Horton is already planning for that time He said I ve played against Leicestershire in T20 at Grace Road several times and also played a couple of first class games here too From travelling around the country I think the club has the best outdoor net wickets for batting and also good wickets in the middle My main plans over the winter are to relocate and get myself settled in during the next four months so that I am fully ready for the start of the official pre season I ll be training with the lads during those months and getting to know everyone who is here before the whole group gets together You can naturally become a senior player in terms of age alone but that is not the way I am looking at it You have to help out so that your experience can supplement all of the younger players in the squad The first thing I am looking at is forming an influential opening partnership with Angus Robson who I know is a fine player It would be great if we can form a formidable partnership at the top of the order in first class cricket Horton has an impressive record in all three formats of the game and is keen to make his mark across the board The batsman has amassed 13 512 runs in the professional game and will form part of a batting line up that now has plenty

the team played consistent cricket The main thing in building a successful club is the type of people and players that you have around and Middlesex had to make sure they got the right people in to start with I m not saying that I was definitely the right person but my mind was set in the right way along with Angus Fraser who is a great man and had his heart set on making sure Middlesex did well We made sure we got the right people in and after having a chat with Chief Executive Wasim Khan and Head Coach Andrew McDonald I could tell that they are looking to do the same Once the club is successful it can be so for a number of years because the club is building from the bottom up It seems exciting where this club is looking to go under Wasim and Andrew and you can see in the last few weeks of the season that the club has made a big change already It is a cricket based decision and I was looking for a club that is moving in the right direction so Leicestershire is a good fit Dexter feels it is the right time for a move for both himself and his family and can t wait to get stuck into life at Grace Road A cricketer who offers a lot as a batsman bowler and fielder Dexter is looking to making his mark in all forms of cricket at Leicestershire He said It s an exciting time I struggled a little bit with the living side in London with a young family and that was a big part of the decision There are some nice villages around here which are ideal for family life and I am really looking forward to being at Leicestershire The season has been a generally frustrating one I came into the team because of injuries as Middlesex were looking to play some younger guys which was totally understandable I didn t set the world on fire with the bat but my bowling kept me in the side and then when I played for the Second XI I found my touch again I was looking to get my chance and enjoy it and I found some form at a good time to show Leicestershire what they were signing Batting in this country is not always easy as we saw with Australia s batsmen during the Ashes series You have to find a way to be consistent and score runs and certain techniques can create problems If your technique is suited to the English game it helps and I have spoken a lot to Nick Compton who has scored runs consistently to find out what works for him Four day cricket is my favourite form of the game as it tests you as a player and a person but I ll be fighting for my place in all formats I must admit I see myself
