A couple of positions down all rounder Zak Chappell proved the perfect ten yesterday afternoon for Leicestershire making a tremendous 96 in his maiden bat in first class cricket The teenager was naturally disappointed to miss out on his century but was still able to reflect positively on the team s situation Chappell also saw the lighter side of getting close recalling a joke with umpire Neil Mallender after he had been put down off Wes Durston for a second time Chappell said My heart was in my mouth for a moment and the umpire told me to buy a lottery ticket when I was dropped on 90 I knew Mark Footitt would swing it back in and I was trying to clip that ball through mid wicket but I got a little inside edge and it ruined my day really he added still smiling It s lovely to do such a good thing and it helped the team get out of a dodgy start and get a decent total It was tough to start with but once you got in it was a little bit easier and I tried to make the most of it The day turned out alright for everyone which was the main thing and we have something to bowl at We ll be looking for early wickets now The 19 year old was full of praise for Rob Taylor and Ollie Freckingham who both made scores in the 30s and were perfect partners at the crease Chappell has played some long innings in the past but this was a big step up and he took it all in his stride in surpassing Phil DeFreitas in making the highest score by a Leicestershire number ten batsman He said It was a really good standard of bowling

rain but Cosgrove and counterpart James Foster risked losing draw points to set up an entertaining final afternoon Cosgrove said It was a good game Losing two days to rain meant that we had to make a game of it and play for something We put 16 points up on the board to play for and unfortunately we weren t quite good enough to win the game We could have sat there and played for bonus points but that would have just been boring cricket for everyone We got a lot out of the game despite coming out on the wrong end of the result It s not ideal when you re without two senior bowlers just five overs into a run chase and Ben Raine was also struggling later on so we were lacking three bowlers who have taken 50 wickets But the lads gave it their best shot The boys fought hard and put in a good showing for the team It was a good challenge for us We want to be in those situations next season 300 ahead driving a game and trying to knock a team over in 50 60 overs We ll definitely be on the right side of those results more often than not next year Leicestershire s skipper now wants the team to end the season on a high at the 3aaa County Ground with County looking to complete a double against their East Midlands rivals Cosgrove said In the last six weeks we ve played some really good cricket We want another good game this week at Derbyshire to ensure that we take momentum into next season We are a really tight group here and there are some exciting times ahead The longer we play together the better we will become We

performances to ensure that the feel good factor continues into the winter programme starting against Essex tomorrow 10 30am start It s a big coup for the club to have signed Neil and Paul this week said McDonald It s nice to have players of their experience leadership capabilities and skillsets They are both going to really compliment the group that we have here The skillsets they will offer in all three formats of the game is massive and we ve lacked a bit of seniority in the batting line up We feel as though a bit more experience is needed alongside our talented young batsmen and Neil and Paul will add that along with Mark Cosgrove and Niall O Brien It was a shame that the weather had so much of a say against Gloucestershire but the players went about the four days well There have been three consistent performances in a row and we were driving the game again which was pleasing It was another positive step forward for the group The two guys who came into the side Rob Taylor and Dan Redfern performed well Dan took his opportunity well and at the selection table it s always nice to know that you have depth It s then been about freshening the players up so that they are ready to hit these last two games running We go into every game trying to win and the games against Essex and Derbyshire will be no different We set ourselves a target of winning two of the last three games so after the weather had the final say against Gloucestershire we re now putting ourselves under a bit of pressure to win the last two It s important that we look at these games as the start of our

this summer alongside Ben Raine and Charlie Shreck and although the latter is ruled out because of a hamstring injury Wayne White goes into the fixture with a five wicket haul under his belt The squad has a nice blend of experience and youth and the team is now producing consistent performances in the LV County Championship much to the delight of the Head Coach We re happy that we backed up the Derbyshire performance as that is the key to success in first class cricket said McDonald None were better than the captain Mark Cosgrove with back to back centuries and Niall O Brien Clint McKay was outstanding again and he Ben Raine and Charlie Shreck have led the attack really well all season We ve remained buoyant throughout the season The way the guys keep presenting the energy and effort at training it will turn It will take some time but the Northants game was another significant step forward for us Leicestershire s science and medicine team have done a tremendous job in limiting injuries this term but last week s game at Wantage Road stretched those particular departments of both sides Northants had to use eight different people as twelfth man including their Head Coach David Ripley as Rob Newton fractured a thumb Steven Crook picked up an ankle problem and Richard Levi hurt his finger among other knocks County also suffered as Raine landed awkwardly on the ball while Shreck pulled up in his run up but the former has made good progress over the last few days and is part of the squad McDonald said I don t think I ve ever seen a game with four significant injuries and it was pretty much all square by the end with nine fit players each It

because of heavy rain at Wantage Road Despite all of those facts Leicestershire found themselves just 86 away from completing a second consecutive Championship victory when umpires Alex Wharf and Mike Burns had no choice but to abandon a miserable final day There is a saying in sport that you can only control the controllables and McDonald was pleased by the way that his charges took responsibility and overcame adversity to put themselves in the box seats It was a really good performance over the first three days of the game he said You can t do much about the weather and what happened was totally out of our control I m really proud of the guys To back up a good win over Derbyshire and to bounce back from some disappointing one day form in between showed a lot of character and a lot of fight which is what we are asking for The way that Wayne White and Clint McKay went about it with us two bowlers down was outstanding For those two to front up and deliver was a significant step forward for the group We know that we re building and moving in the right direction and that was another huge step forward A good demonstration of heart and spirit was provided by White who overcame a tough time with the ball in the first innings by making a vital 43 and taking five wickets second time around in the absence of Raine and Shreck We always knew that we d have to get Wayne back up and running and there were no huge concerns after the first innings said McDonald We knew that he was short of where he needed to be but the only way to get back up to the level is to

be looking to make sure that we back up a very good performance against Derbyshire There has been a bit of a dampener with the two one day games between the four day games but let s not forget that we won our last Championship game and we ll take plenty of confidence forward to Northamptonshire The beauty of cricket is that you shift formats and we ll shift our focus We ll also bring in some players including four members of our frontline bowling attack in Clint McKay Ben Raine Charlie Shreck and Rob Sayer Our captain Mark Cosgrove will return to the side too and he is coming into the game on the back of a Championship hundred There is a big turnover of players from the one day format to the four day game and that will help to freshen us up There are only 16 days of action left this season and McDonald wants his team to make the absolute most out of every available opportunity He said The challenge for the group is to finish off the season well I know that people will reflect on last year but we don t want to be in the same boat We have to win games move forward as a group and keep improving That will come from hard work and a little bit of belief but most importantly we must bring effort to every contest If we present that effort then we ll get good results That s all I ask of the guys some days you bring the energy and effort and you come up short but if you leave 100 out there then nobody can question you A huge positive this season has been the form of Leicestershire s seam trio of McKay Shreck

Day Cup matches against Worcestershire and Somerset Although the Foxes cannot make it through to the next round the games at New Road Monday 10 30am start and Grace Road Tuesday 10 30am start are still important to the Head Coach McDonald wants to end the 50 over campaign on a high to ensure that the club receives another boost ahead of the LV CC game at Northamptonshire at the end of the week He said We can t make it through to the next round so there will be some changes and guys will get some opportunities to show what they can do I m excited to see what some of the younger guys can do and it s a great chance for them to show their skills We have got to focus on the Championship and get some more performances and results because we want to finish as high as we can in the table We want to keep piling wins on the board because that s what it s all about But that doesn t meant we don t want to end the Royal London One Day Cup with good performances and results Cricket is about momentum and we want to build on the Derbyshire win as we head to Northants later in the week for another LV CC game McDonald said the players enjoyed the victory at Grace Road earlier this week but then quickly put that behind them as they look to the rest of the season We celebrated the win against Derbyshire but it s all about moving on looking to the next game and continuing to build for the future We need to keep progressing and moving forwards he said There will be a number of changes to the Foxes squad from the

been a massive factor in me coming here said White When we had a successful T20 season he captained half of it and many of the younger lads spent a lot of time in his company He spoke a lot of sense about cricket and we all knew that he would become a coach at some point It is great that he s back at Leicestershire Andrew has backed me by bringing me here It wasn t the greatest of departures the last time I left and there is some making up to do with some of the members and people around the club but he has backed me and I have got to start repaying that faith Everybody understands that it won t happen overnight here The signs have been positive this year as we have some good young players coming through and Andrew is keen to have a few more senior players around Andrew is backing me to be a good influence in the changing room and on the field and lead us to a few victories It won t happen straightaway but we have to improve every day and every season and hopefully success will then come I ve experienced a few different cultures different coaches and different people There are a lot of younger players around so it s important that I make the right influence on them and say the right things and maybe not say certain things at certain points Andrew is keen on me to be involved in the team meetings and obviously I have to gain the trust of the lads and coaches through playing first but if I m needed to speak then I m happy to speak If younger players want to speak to me then I m always here to listen White left at the end of the 2012 season to push himself out of his comfort zone in a bid to improve his game and he feels that has happened during spells at Lancashire and Derbyshire The all rounder is now happy to be back at a club where he enjoyed a lot of success in the past and White is looking forward to wearing his Leicestershire county cap on the field for the first time He said I may not have played as much as I would have liked in the last few years but I definitely feel that I m coming back as a better player These should be the best years of my career and I m glad that they will be at Leicestershire It doesn t seem like two minutes since I was last here and the club is looking on the up under Andrew I played alongside him and I can see what he is trying to do here so hopefully I can help him to bring success to Leicestershire in the next few years I had a couple of good seasons on the bounce and got capped in the last game of
