way to bright night and the faint speculation of dawn in the east greeted the Eve of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception By moonlight by hedgerow by scurrying foxes in fields past stiles and crooked fence posts her laugh a chant of morning we bolstered each the other and made fair time for the small cottage I called home In regret and to make amends the bacon sizzled in the skillet crushed coffee beans in the mortar pestle and fat sliced Idaho potatoes cut cubed in a bowl mixed with herbs and sorrow Stir An arm overhead like Semiramis of old her divine form becalmed on the shores of the city After she stretched and sat we fed until long after the churchgoers returned from chapel Two forgotten lives sipped coffee black and bitter long pregnant silences filled with words unsaid Today I told her I am joining the sodality to pour tea and trim bread of crusts and talk repentance and hope for the coming year and in the dark of the confessional box I shall talk through my hat of sins sinned and not of last night and its loveliness Simply she smiled knees drawn to her chest pink toes turning white on the wooden chair Sweet pickle she said without a stitch of clothing in sight and kissed my stubbly cheek About James Claffey Writer James Claffey hails from County Westmeath Ireland and lives on an avocado ranch in Carpinteria CA He is fiction editor at Literary Orphans and the author of the short fiction collection Blood a Cold Blue His work appears in the W W Norton Anthology Flash Fiction International and is forthcoming in Queensferry Press s anthology Best Small Fictions of 2015 Mail Web More Posts 3 Comments comments Prev Time is Money Next Horsa Related Posts Getting Rid of Ovid The Pleasures of Reading Short Stories 10 Things To Do In A Library Other Than Reading Litro TV Recent Posts Bringing Up Baby In the Night Time Before the Sun Rises at the Gate Theatre True Love in Los Angeles A R BY ANY OTHER NAME The Echo Travelling in Fiji The Litro Blog View Archive 11th February 2016 Litro 149 The Love issue Letter from the Editor By Eric Akoto Love we spend our lives craving it in one form or another searching for it and talking about it Its meaning is felt more than it is clearly expressed Some call it the greatest virtue Continue reading 9th December 2015 Litro 148 The Going Home issue Letter from the Editor By Eric Akoto This month in Litro 148 we explore the notion of what Going Home means to us Is it a familiar physical space A refuge A feeling A state of mind Or is home actually to be found in another human being maybe your partner your parents How do you know when you have found it Continue reading Contact Us General 44 0 20 3371 9971 info litro co

night looking out from our apartment balcony steaming mugs cradled in our hands talking about the future as we watched the sea freeze You d said not to worry that bad things always pass and I understood that watching the water change I smile at the memory and that s when you strike Aim like a sniper the ball hits my neck and you cheer spinning in a circle with your hands in the air I shake snow from my collar and shiver as it falls inside my jacket I duck down and scoop out a handful of my own but before I can shape it you re running at me laughing and then we re both on the ground We sink into the snow together and I give up the fight We lie breathless and watch the white sky above us glimmer and flurry with the beginnings of a blizzard I read that the Norwegian word for happy is lykkelig and I roll the word around my mouth before leaning across to kiss your rosy cheek Lykkelig About Samuel Best Samuel Best has been published in magazines in Britain North America and Scandinavia and his début novel Shop Front was published by Fledgling Press in March 2014 He helps run Octavius a literary magazine for students in Scotland and can be found on Twitter spbbest Mail Web More Posts 1 Comments comments Prev Clerkenwell Canker Next Time is Money Related Posts The Black and White Promises You Can Keep Hamartia Litro TV Recent Posts Bringing Up Baby In the Night Time Before the Sun Rises at the Gate Theatre True Love in Los Angeles A R BY ANY OTHER NAME The Echo Travelling in Fiji The Litro Blog View Archive 11th February 2016 Litro 149 The Love issue Letter from the Editor By Eric Akoto Love we spend our lives craving it in one form or another searching for it and talking about it Its meaning is felt more than it is clearly expressed Some call it the greatest virtue Continue reading 9th December 2015 Litro 148 The Going Home issue Letter from the Editor By Eric Akoto This month in Litro 148 we explore the notion of what Going Home means to us Is it a familiar physical space A refuge A feeling A state of mind Or is home actually to be found in another human being maybe your partner your parents How do you know when you have found it Continue reading Contact Us General 44 0 20 3371 9971 info litro co uk Sales Advertising enquiries 44 0 20 3371 9971 Email Sales Magazine Editorial editor litro co uk All Online Editorial online litro co uk Book Reviews Author Interviews reviews litro co uk Film Arts Editorial arts litro co uk Litro Lab Podcast litrolab litro co uk LitroTV litrotv litro co uk Litro Listings listings litro co uk Subscribe Stockists Submissions Advertising Our Team About Litro Litro Magazine is a free short stories and

leave me alone I shake my head Now that s where you re wrong See you reckon I ve only got one choice don t you Tommy boy You think I have to leave you alone because if I do beat the shit out of you then I ll get expelled I sniff and narrow the gap between us I pull a Sharpie pen out of my pocket and tap the air with it But there is this third option Tommy looks into the toilet cubicles but they re empty He s walking backwards to the urinals and into puddles and I m walking forwards I pull the lid off the pen It pops And I dive at him His bag slides to the floor and I pin him to the row of wet sinks pushing him down He s shouting at me but I m not listening I have both of his hands behind his back He s probably thinking the worst bent over like this but I pull down the collar of his shirt and try to write on his neck while he s being Buckaroo I draw the last hair and I let him go What the fuck he says What d you do It s a warning label The front of his jumper is one big wet patch now He twists and turns while looking at the mirror But he can t see it He pushes down on a tap scoops up some water and throws it onto his neck rubbing it as hard as he can He stops and tries again throwing his head about He picks up his bag and hooks it over one shoulder You wanker he says He turns around and walks to the door My artwork hasn t faded one bit It s a bit wiggly but you can make out the I m a knob part like a number plate even if you can t recognise the sketch But hey I m no Leonardo Di Vinci and I bet he never had to paint on a wriggling canvas About Freya Morris Freya Morris spends half of her time as a Communications Officer at Bristol University writing about the real world and the other half of her time is spent writing fiction In December 2013 she won the Yellow Room Flash Fiction Competition and has had short stories published in Nature s Futures section Popshot and National Flash Fiction Day Anthology Scraps Mail Web More Posts 1 Comments comments Prev Inkubation Next Clerkenwell Canker Related Posts Two Tongues Biography Extract from Casanova The Thing Perhaps Litro TV Recent Posts Bringing Up Baby In the Night Time Before the Sun Rises at the Gate Theatre True Love in Los Angeles A R BY ANY OTHER NAME The Echo Travelling in Fiji The Litro Blog View Archive 11th February 2016 Litro 149 The Love issue Letter from the Editor By Eric Akoto Love we spend our lives craving it in one form or
