peed or only flushed the toilet He pointed to my grandmother s quilts Oh those are beautiful he said and sat down on the bed fingered the material and looked up at me Here was Dr Ecks sitting on the edge of my bed looking up at me with what looked like desire I edged toward the other side of the room Yes She made them when I was born I take them everywhere I repair them I was talking too fast I wasn t ready for Professor Ecks on my grandmother s quilts A married man shall never defile us they seemed to say not surprisingly in my grandmother s proper British accent In late October I was still in the semi moralistic stage it was too bad I was in love with a married man but I would get over it Dr Ecks looked at his watch and I walked him to the door and said thank you for lunch He said we d have to do it again and left We were close enough to kiss but only looked For weeks I asked myself why I did not take advantage of the opportunity It never came again although I was to fall deeper and more painfully in love and eventually to discard my previous views on the immorality of adultery Specifically I dropped them the night I had dinner at Dr Ecks house and met his Wife Two professors and another student were invited so I didn t feel conspicuous The other Profs drank too much and gabbed with the Wife whom they had known almost a decade I mooned over my broccoli at Dr Ecks at the other end of the table His Son looked just like him sweet and sad equipped for a long life of looking expectantly into women s eyes The Wife was cordial to everyone except Mr Ecks whom she regarded with an icy air of distaste Dinner lasted forever and by the end of the evening I wanted to rescue Dr Ecks from this seething pit of domestic horror The poor man I thought contending with constant opprobrium from his nasty Wife putting up with her outright hatred for his work Oh I hate s she d said naming the practitioners of his profession The professors got drunk and the other student left early so I accepted a ride with Dr Ecks who drove his colleagues safely home We dropped them off first which didn t make sense since I lived closest to the Ecks So said Dr Ecks when we were alone driving across town in the heart of a college town midnight so how are you he asked with such intensity that I might have confessed but he wasn t ready for such disclosure He liked things hidden messages which needed to be decoded with long lasting and intricate pleasure I I m having a hard time Ronald I said Turn left It seemed he d forgotten either where

again Politely belatedly Juliet cautions me It is too rash too unadvised too sudden Too like the lightning which doth cease to be She s sitting on the balcony at the table her head bent low A slick black pen slimy like a sea cucumber moves under her direction I call up and she stops Do you want tea now It s a little late for tea she says A drink then Dinner I m working But you are on holiday Marking she calls back Coursework She is on the first floor only I ve climbed higher many times I grab the trellis and scale the wall Leap the railings No work when you are on holiday I say The white leaves of paper are stacked neatly on the table I scatter them to the wind They land in the flowerbeds impale themselves on cactus spikes It s forbidden you see She leans over the side I think she might cry Or jump If I help you pick them up will you promise no more work At Erik s request we don t eat in the hotel restaurant You say it s a postman s holiday he queries as he charges his beat up jeep over cobbled streets I laugh Busman s holiday He flashes me his carefree grin He really knows how to live And you are you having a teacher s holiday now he asks You don t understand I say Your work is a holiday But you are here he says Yes but well I don t know whose holiday this is Not mine I m sure Erik stops the jeep reaches over and puts his hand on my shoulder His touch burns into my chaste flesh Yes it is he assures me Juliet reluctantly admits You kiss by the book After dinner I take Rebecca to the beach We lie on cool damp sand Inky sky covers us The sea murmurs lovingly in our ears It always works Have you read Romeo and Juliet she asks No Is it good Year Eleven don t think so I have a copy with me you can borrow it if you like Yes please I m sorry for her I wish it was different We are both teachers but your job is not like mine Yours squeezes all the life out of you Do you even like it She frowns I stroke a finger across her forehead trying to erase the lines of pressure that stretch there Don t do that It makes you look old That s how I feel most of the time she sighs But not tonight No not tonight Look love what envious streaks do lace the severing clouds in yonder east Night s candles are burnt out and jocund day stands tiptoe on the misty mountaintops I must be gone and live or stay and die That s beautiful What is it It s from Romeo and Juliet It means that I wish I could stay here forever she replies Two words down deep decide it s time to make a controlled emergency swimming ascent to the surface You can You don t mean that she says quietly Anyway I have to go home My students I ve got responsibilities and you ve got What Your pick from the next lot of holiday makers Moonlight colours everything black and white You re wrong Really Yes because it is the end of the season I grin at her Oh I thought never mind And because even if there were more coming I wouldn t care You are the last I put my arms around her Kiss her long and slow His life is so wonderfully easy All he has to do is drift with the tide We go back to my room He is the tide He takes me out with him I want to float freely below whipped cream waves forever So does Juliet It was the nightingale and not the lark Believe me love it was the nightingale It s morning I cross the compound to the staff quarters Guess you ve won Paddy says So tell me What she s like Nice Nice That it Did she let her hair down or what Don t tell me she kept that bun in He laughs I flick him the finger and turn to go Haven t you forgotten something Paddy calls He produces the trophy he made two summers ago from a broken legged Barbie that had been abandoned by the pool her one good leg jammed into the bottom of a polystyrene cup with the words Scuba diving Summer School Shagging Champion scored on it in blue biro And my name underneath twice Outside I put it in the nearest bin I don t recognise the bronzed and smiling face framed by lose flowing fair hair that stares back at me from the mirror But I like her a lot She s happy All her cares have drifted out to sea Dives fill my logbook Erik fills my bed A chaotic pile of unmarked marking stuck with prickles lies washed up in the corner Days disappear melting like snowflakes before I can catch them and look closely into their frozen hearts Juliet reminds me It is the lark that sings so out of tune I wait by the scuba hut Read Romeo and Juliet Act III scene V There are silver traces where her pencil has glided More light and light more dark and dark our woes I don t have time to finish it now She is going home tomorrow Been stood up Paddy gloats Still plenty more fish in the sea eh I d like to run him through with something blunt Maybe something s up P rhaps you should go find her he suggests smugly I set off across the sand When I know I m out of sight I run I see it lying on the mat in

there is nothing else to say And so they leave the diner and the coffee grows cold and the waitress follows them with her eyes and they walk together acutely aware of the other s presence On the way to the parking lot two men pass them They wear double breasted pinstriped suits shades and fedoras improbable gangsters from a 1940s mafia movie One turns to the other and says Hey I hear Louie is back in town and walks on towards the diner out of earshot Did you hear that Nancy says Seth without thinking force of habit Louie is back in town Oh no exclaims Nancy You don t mean Big Louie and there is a split second silence Then both erupt into laughter loud and spontaneous and stop remembering with a stab how happy they had once been how much they had laughed sparring off each other s lame jokes And each once again is wrangling with impossible emotions with unendurable loss and the word is on Seth s lips again and this time it burns They reach the parking lot In front of them the highway stretches towards the horizon a solitary black pencil line marking out the miles and miles between them Not for the first time Seth wants to deny everything and Nancy is hanging back waiting for the word to land in her hands so she can hold on to it But then he remembers and brushes her cheek and turns Look after yourself Nancy is all he says and he walks towards his car and doesn t look back You too Seth her voice is small and in his mind he can see her standing there in the dust a stricken thing in a blue green dress a line of poetry running through her skin To the east a void of white sky is seeping into lemon then mauve as Seth s glance travels westwards He opens the door of his car and stops He cannot do it He cannot leave her He will put his arms around her this time he will make her stay keep her here no matter what And that is when he turns to call her back But now the road stretches straight and true in each direction and there is no Nancy and there is no car He is too late she has gone Seth sits in the driver s seat and grips the steering wheel tightly until it hurts until the physical pain soothes him just a little Finally he turns the ignition and looks at the seat beside him and remembers why he s come And so he drives and keeps on driving until he reaches the place that somewhere place where he has promised Nancy that when the time is right when he is strong enough he will give up her ashes to the sea and finally for the sake of them both put her to rest About cheryl powell I am a
