  • Parents urged to read the bedtime story on a tablet
    a tablet computer Their research has found that technology can have a new and important role to play in encouraging very young children to read Almost three quarters of under fives have access to different computers and smart phones in the home and the trust insist that it should be exploited as a basis for reading Nursery leaders have responded by warning that exposure to technology at a young age risks damaging children and teachers have claimed that children s attention spans are shorter than ever before because of addiction to screen based entertainment Jonathan Douglas the director of the National Literacy Trust insists that they are not advocating technology instead of books but wanted parents to use both and insists that When parents read to their children whatever the medium they increase their child s enjoyment of reading The Trust surveyed more than 1 000 parents with children aged three to five Almost all children had access to books in the home and just over 70 could use some sort of touch screen device Alarmingly some 2 4 of children failed to read at all and 13 3 looked at stories only once or twice a week Researchers found that young children who had access to touch screen technology and books at home were more likely to enjoy reading and perform in line with national targets than those with access to only books Their research found that 77 4 enjoyed reading if they had access to both compared with 70 8 who only read printed text Personalised book publisher love2ead have only ever produced printed books as founder and former teacher Caroline Edwards has always felt that children need to experience the physical feel of a book and have access to books they can store and browse at any
