Tuesday 17 March 2015 23 43 Daughter with Down s syndrome inspired mum to start personalised book business Did you know the first love2read book was created for a child with Down s syndrome To help raise awareness of World Down Syndrome Day we thought you d like to hear the love2read story The founder of love2read Caroline Edwards lives near Henley on Thames with husband Fred and their three children A passion for reading My friends used to laugh at me when they saw the black and white soft picture books in all my children s cots when they were newborn remembers Caroline Caroline has always had a passionate belief that a love of reading is vital in a child s education and fundamental for future success Caroline feels that The best thing you can do to help your child to learn to read is to give them a love of books she adds They need to be exposed to books from birth it s no good waiting until they are five It s always more of a struggle to teach children to read who don t like picking up books The driving force One of a growing breed of mothers turned entrepreneurs Caroline qualified as a teacher and during her fifteen years in the classroom she taught children from nursery through to year 7 When her second child was born with Down s syndrome and had to spend the first six months of her life in hospital due to some serious health problems Caroline made the decision to stay at home for a few years to look after her children Caroline explains Although I wasn t working as a teacher I had many challenges to overcome looking after my eldest child who was just 2 and caring for a very sick child My husband s career also involved us moving houses every few years and then just when I thought things were getting easier our son was born so there was never a dull moment The inspiration Caroline s eldest daughter has always loved books and was reading before she started school Olivia who is two years younger has Down s syndrome and although she enjoyed looking at books with an adult she was more reluctant to pick up books on her own So to encourage Olivia Caroline made a book using photos of the family and it was a real hit Olivia carried around the My family book all the time she wouldn t put it down Caroline explains I noticed that she was starting to recognise the words as we had read it so many times and one day I spotted my younger two year old son reading the book to his teddy carefully pointing to the words as he said them he was word perfect too Turning the idea into a business Turning an idea into a business is not that easy Caroline was confident that she had a good idea and despite searching the internet could not find anyone producing reading books for children that used personal photos and the correct text font for early readers Lots of her friends wanted her to make books for their children but she knew that they needed to look like proper books and not home made if she was ever going to sell them Then Caroline met an old friend who happens to run a design agency for a coffee one day and she offered to help Between them they came up with the simple but educationally based design for the books A year was spent setting up the company finding a professional printer prepared to work with her and the website designer and developing the love2read concept Caroline explains I felt as though I was on a very steep learning curve and I had to take it one step at a time but I was determined to get this business off the ground despite all the problems and setbacks Fortunately she had lots of support and encouragement from her husband friends family and local business support networks and finally launched the website to coincide with her son starting full time school Caroline comments There is so much
