  • Create an Easter Egg Hunt they will always remember...
for clues and pens to write with Places to hide chocolates inside or outside depending on the weather Set up Hide the ten chocolates Write 10 simple clues to help your child find each item For instance if the chocolate bunny is in the lounge behind the blue sofa you could write a short clue that says I am behind something blue During the treasure hunt Hand your child the first clue and help them read it Make it fun but encourage your child to have a go at reading even if they just get the first letter sound Never let a child struggle and help them to read the clues if necessary and keep the game moving As each chocolate and clue is found you can either let them eat the chocolates as they find them or get them to collect all the chocolates in a basket and eat them at the end At the end of the activity praise your child Be specific Don t simply say You did well Instead say I was really impressed when you sounded out the word blue You re becoming a good reader This will reinforce the notion that reading is important

  • Daughter with Down's syndrome inspired mum to start personalised book business
the decision to stay at home for a few years to look after her children Caroline explains Although I wasn t working as a teacher I had many challenges to overcome looking after my eldest child who was just 2 and caring for a very sick child My husband s career also involved us moving houses every few years and then just when I thought things were getting easier our son was born so there was never a dull moment The inspiration Caroline s eldest daughter has always loved books and was reading before she started school Olivia who is two years younger has Down s syndrome and although she enjoyed looking at books with an adult she was more reluctant to pick up books on her own So to encourage Olivia Caroline made a book using photos of the family and it was a real hit Olivia carried around the My family book all the time she wouldn t put it down Caroline explains I noticed that she was starting to recognise the words as we had read it so many times and one day I spotted my younger two year old son reading the book to his teddy carefully pointing to the words as he said them he was word perfect too Turning the idea into a business Turning an idea into a business is not that easy Caroline was confident that she had a good idea and despite searching the internet could not find anyone producing reading books for children that used personal photos and the correct text font for early readers Lots of her friends wanted her to make books for their children but she knew that they needed to look like proper books and not home made if she was ever going to sell them Then Caroline met an old friend who happens to run a design agency for a coffee one day and she offered to help Between them they came up with the simple but educationally based design for the books A year was spent setting up the company finding a professional printer prepared to work with her and the website designer and developing the love2read concept Caroline explains I felt as though I was on a very steep learning curve and I had to take it one step at a time but I was determined to get this business off the ground despite all the problems and setbacks Fortunately she had lots of support and encouragement from her husband friends family and local business support networks and finally launched the website to coincide with her son starting full time school Caroline comments There is so much to do setting up a business I had no idea what was involved I now understand why so many struggle to even start trading a good idea is only the starting point Running a business I launched the business and just assumed rather naively that I could sit back and people would buy books It quickly
