complete article click here March 2013 Symphony 5 in America Sheldon Bair and the Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra The American conductor Sheldon Bair has a long held and deep commitment to the music of Malcolm Arnold Under his baton and in the presence of the composer the SSO gave the US premiere of Symphony 9 in March 2000 Other works he has introduced to the orchestra s repertoire include Symphony 1 US premiere 2001 and the Concerto for Oboe and Strings alongside several film suites and overtures Sheldon will soon be adding to this impressive list when he conducts the SSO in a performance of Arnold s mighty Symphony 5 on 9 March at the Bel Air High School Maryland He shares here a few observations on the joys of rehearsing this work with such a talented community orchestra read more January 2013 Malcolm Arnold Trumpet Competition The very first Malcolm Arnold Trumpet Competition at Wells Cathedral School took place on January 29th The brain child of Well s Head of Brass Paul Denegri this inaugural event featured students from the school but from 2014 the competition will be open to candidates across the UK The Wells Cathedral School is one of Britain s flagship specialist music schools passionate in its support and development of young musicians The naming of this annual competition is a wonderful acknowledgement of Sir Malcolm s contribution to musical life in this country as trumpeter and composer and as a champion of music and youth The eminent adjudicator for the day was celebrated trumpeter and soloist Crispian Steele Perkins The results of this year s cathedral school com January 2013 Symphony 5 Symphony in a Weekend with the Open University Orchestra The OU Orchestra is an amateur orchestra based at the Open University Milton Keynes and open to staff students people living or working nearby It gives two public concerts a year and plays music across the symphonic orchestra repertoire Symphony in a Weekend was established a few years ago in order to perform and promote one off orchestral events with the aim of exploring works possibly beyond the scope of many amateur orchestras Conductor Hugh Molloy suggested the OU Orchestra looked at Malcolm Arnold s Symphony No 5 and it soon became clear it was an excellent candidate for a one off event Consequently the idea of Arnold in an afternoon was born which will take place in the Hub Theatre at The Open University Milton Keynes on Sunday 3 February The afternoon starts at 2 00pm for those playing and will finish with a run through performance at 5 00pm to which all are invited The his dazzling technique and sensitive musicianship clarinettist Michael Collins early in 2012 recorded Malcolm Arnold s Clarinet Concert No 2 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra This recording on the Chandos label marks the beginning of a new survey of British clarinet concertos in which Michael Collins combines the role of clarinet soloist and conductor The CD CHAN10739 was released in October Lockhart is currently available with the August edition of the BBC Music Magazine This superb performance of an early Arnold work dating from 1949 was recorded by the BBC at the Watford Colosseum on 3rd November 2011 and broadcast on Radio 3 on 2nd December July 2012 Concerto for Recorder Michael Petri City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong new CD release on OUR Recordings Malcolm Arnold composed his Recorder Concerto in 1988 for the renowned soloist Michala Petri for whom he had written his Fantasy for Descant Recorder just two years earlier Petri and the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong conductor Jean Thorel have recorded the work and the newly released CD is now available on the OUR Recordings label The concerto has a duration of 14 minutes and is made up of three movements with the soloist called upon to play the soprano recorder in the iridescent two outer movements and the sopranino used to magical effect in the expressive slow central section One of the world s great with his personal reflections of the man and his music From 1999 until his death in 2006 Malcolm Arnold was an Honorary Patron of the Ten Tors Orchestra To mark the 90th anniversary of the composer s birth this October the orchestra performed his Little Suite for Orchestra No 1 Sinfonietta No 1 Four Cornish Dances and the rarely heard Viola Concerto with the brilliant young soloist Richard Waters The concert conducted by Simon Ible took place at St Andrew s Minster Church Plymouth on the 29th October The festival also featured the Arnold Camerata who paid their own tribute to the composer in
