with China you can never anticipate what exactly will happen it s either very good or very bad and unfortunately it was the latter in the actual final At Bank Holiday weekend I had the weekend off Mary had two Obedience Shows and along with any other results she s had I ll put results at the end of this news item The following weekend on 3rd 4th and 5th September I organised the Kennel Club Olympia Agility Semi Finals which used to be sponsored by Pedigree but now the Kennel Club have taken this on themselves and they also have a new supporter called Joint Aid for Dogs So I continue in my usual role for this but I m now doing it for the Kennel Club rather than the previous sponsor One of the things I changed this year was the number of semi finals we have The Royal Show finished last year so we lost that venue and I stopped semis being held at another couple of venues so now the City of Birmingham holds all the semi finals for the Olympia Finals which includes Small Medium Large Grade 3 5 Large Grade 6 7 and ABC well over 300 dogs competing over the three days to get to Olympia all with two runs Plus we had the YKC Agility Dog of the Year which we run there as well on behalf of the Kennel Club so it was all rather a busy time On the last afternoon of the City of Birmingham Show we hitched up the caravan and made our annual pilgrimage to Anglesey arriving in the dark and a little bit on the late side Mary has been teaching on a week s camp for Rex and Maggie in Anglesey for a few years now and it was another great week with a lovely training hall lots of room for camping and exercising the dogs and a pristine set of agility equipment so it s HTM Freestyle Agility all week As with most of Mary s weeks the majority of participants had been before and this year they were blessed with good weather so it really was an excellent week I wasn t feeling at my best so I didn t stray off the site all week We dashed back from Anglesey on the Friday night as on the Saturday it was Thames Championship Obedience Show followed by Coventry Championship Show the next day but more about obedience later On 15th 16th September Mary was booked for two training days at the Mid Wales Dog Training Centre run by Gail Gwesyn Pryce One day was HTM and the second was Obedience There was a great bunch of girls on the course with a few from Blue Cross from as far afield as London and we were also pleased to welcome one young lady from Ireland who had come over specially although the weather was a bit damp and I don t think she was too impressed sleeping in a tent I had suggested the year before that on the night prior to the course starting as most people were camping or local we had a pool party Well it s supposed to be a dog hydrotherapy pool but in actual fact when she installed it she actually purchased an ordinary swimming pool with a ramp in it and it s just superb big enough to have a swim yourself and also have your dog with you So on the Tuesday night there was wine and snacks and I have to say it really was a great night Lots of people went into the pool with their dogs although I have to say that as I was the only bloke I decided to give it a miss myself and had my swim the next afternoon In fact I was in there for so long that I came out all white and crinkly so not a pretty sight and on a couple of occasions I was joined by a dog It s quite unique really our Levi just loves swimming and every time we let him out of the van for a walk he made a beeline for the door to the swimming pool It certainly is a special event but unfortunately being Wales and September you are at the mercy of the weather We were going to try to move it a bit earlier but anyway as soon as the date comes up on Mary s website it s well worth booking a spot if only for the swimming The following week on 22nd September we had a Canine Cabaret Night in aid of Canine Partners in Northampton There were only around 100 there but it really was a smashing night with a great atmosphere and we were really pleased with it The following week we were off to the Dogs Trust Darlington branch for another Cabaret Night organised by David Fish It s a lovely hall fully carpeted but very compact We had 80 people in the audience and again the atmosphere was wonderful so it was a really nice night The downside of course is that it s a 350 mile round trip for us and I think we got home at around 1 30 am feeling a wee bit tired The first weekend in October was Elm Park and Thurrock Championship Obedience weekends but again more of that later During the following week Mary had been invited to the Isle of Man and unfortunately the person who initially started organising this had to stand down so Debbie Martin picked up the reins We left on 5th October and joined the ferry from Heysham I thought it was quite a small ferry and that was reflected in the fact that it was a bit of a bumpy ride in fact as we approached the Isle of Man Mary s sister Pauline who came with us was rather regretting having a curry as soon

duration and of course to set up Mary s trade stand with Pauline Mary s sister and Pauline Churchill who would be working the stand for the whole of the show Also coming with us was Jan Morse who was Mary s right hand man for the show or should I say woman My time at Crufts is completely committed to the Main Arena and opening the Obedience Arena with the parade each morning while Mary has to go off and do whatever she needs to do On the Thursday she did a 20 minute training display in the Main Arena and we were very surprised afterwards at how many people saw it as the whole Main Arena programme was streamed directly onto the Crufts website It was quite amazing really as people were watching from all over the world really a tremendous innovation for Crufts Later in the day Mary was performing a one hour demonstration on the Samsung stand which she always enjoys doing On the Friday Mary started with the Dog Obedience Championshps and first into the arena was Taz Mary was really pleased with his heel work but unfortunately when she sent him on the sendaway someone took a flash photograph and he stopped in his tracks So that effectively put him out of any likelihood of a placing Also he lost confidence and didn t do his distance control so we would like to send a very big thank you to people who use a camera and although numerous requests are made for no flash photography nevertheless they carry on and take photos with the flash switched on I hope they were pleased with themselves On the Saturday it was the Bitch Obedience Championships Mary was really pleased with Foxy s round especially as this was her first time at Crufts All her exercises were good except for sendaway where she slowed at the front marker and the judge deducted 10 and she only lost 22 altogether So it was a good result overall In the World Cup on the Sunday again Taz did all the exercises well and Mary was really pleased with him in fact Taz had the best heel work mark of the day But following his experiences in the Dog Obedience Championships he slowed and dropped between the front markers on sendaway obviously due to lack of confidence from the flash photograph on Friday But still the England team were in with a chance of winning when the scent exercise started but unfortunately Taz failed scent All the teams were supposed to parade in the Main Arena but it was a great shame that the competition did not actually finish until after 6 00 pm and they missed their slot It was a quick change after the World Cup on Sunday for Mary as it was Best in Show Night Again it was streamed live over the internet and also on the More4 DFS Crufts television programme But unfortunately a lot

tremendous holiday but it will take me a long time to save for another one while I m collecting trolleys on a car park okay okay I m only joking Anyway while I was away Mary was busy getting ready for Olympia She qualified Julie Skipp s China for the Olympia Novice Final after competing in the semi finals at Stoneleigh so she was really pleased with herself As usual I was running the final for the Kennel Club and Pedigree Overall it was probably one of the most successful events I ve run for them yet I have a great team working for me and amazingly virtually every seat in the building was sold out over all five days that we had agility on Now back to Mary and the Novice final We had a 35 dog semi final at Olympia on the Sunday morning 20th December Charlie Wyatt from Rugby was judging he s a Championship Judge and there was severe difficulty in all his courses The top ten in this competition were going through to the final on the Saturday nights dogs placed 11th to 20th would compete in a pairs relay competition Mary had a really good run and got sixth in the semi final with a clear round in 36 75 less than 2 seconds behind the leader and I have to say that I don t think the guy in the lead was actually born when Mary first competed at Olympia In fact it must be some kind of record as this was the 24th time that Mary competed at Olympia and she has competed with six different dogs Anyway she was through to the Saturday night Grand final She had a tremendous run but Anthony Clarke who was the morning semi final winner also won the final and Mary had just 5 faults and did really well to get a time of 38 41 but even if she s not had the 5 faults on that time she would still only have got fourth place One or two people said afterwards they were sorry she didn t do better but I can tell you that she was absolutely over the moon with all the hundreds and hundreds of dogs who tried to get through to the Olympia Novice and then get fifth place against handlers somewhat younger than her she was really delighted 1 Blazing Red of Rujaff Anthony Clarke GBR 0 penalties 35 23 2 Laetare Pike s First Edition Rachel Stevens GBR 0 Penalties 37 72 3 Raeanne s Moondance David Isbister GBR 0 Penalties 37 79 4 Just a Little Farm Boy Kate Truluck GBR 0 Penalties 39 05 5 She s the One Mary Ray GBR 5 Penalties 38 41 After Olympia as usual it was a quiet family Christmas Unfortunately while we were at Olympia one of Mary s older brothers passed away so that did put a little bit of a dampener on it I bought her

to that there is another ground level block which is dedicated to the larger breeds The next block we looked in was the multi storey kennel and this is for all the medium and small breeds situated over 3 floors with each floor having its own grooming parlour All the kennels were immaculately clean and all the dogs looked well although one or two were under veterinary treatment and looked a little bit sorry for themselves In the main kennel block on the ground floor there was the general public reception area a doggy shop and the usual interview rooms for perspective new owners and after the owners have been accepted as potential adopters they are then taken upstairs in the block to where the kennels were on the upper two floors There were some really super dogs in fact Mary fell in love with a big GSD and we could have easily fell in love with some of the Staffies there They are very fortunate being very high profile and they must be one of the few establishments that hold interviews for voluntary helpers as they are normally in the fortunate position of being over subscribed The big difficulty they have I think it is because of location is the type of dog that they have in as they are swamped with Staffie and Staffie crosses which does limit their choices and as they say unfortunately somebody has to do it and I m sure they do their level best to educate the new owners in the importance of keeping their dogs in control and on a lead In saying that we did see a good variety of other breeds but there was only one collie and one or two other guarding breeds and a good selection of smaller dogs Anyway to sum it all it was a really worthwhile day and I have to say that we both believe they do a sterling job in the location they are in having to take unwanted dogs in from owners who probably have had status symbol dogs for all the wrong reasons Just a quick look back through September Mary had a few days in the caravan at Kath Dark s farm over at Daventry with a few friends from Rugby DTC doing their own thing training dogs and with Kath joining in It is a great venue and Kath is ever so hospitable so I think that will be a repeat next year And the weather was good as well On the 16th 17th September Mary was taking a 2 day HTM course at the Mid Wales Dog Training Centre for Gail Gwesyn Pryce She has a dedicated ourdoor training ménage with a small building for the tea and coffee etc a great location in the middle of nowhere about 15 minutes from Newtown and a great bunch of girls on the course I think they all enjoyed it in fact I think Gail is going to book Mary

Leeds for the click and treat training day that Mary was taking for them We must be lucky with venues because once more this is a perfect place to take a training day A huge area loads of room for spectators a non slip floor and all I needed to do was set up the PA and away we went And nice people to work with so many thanks to Bernie The first week in June Mary was taking a HTM training day and a Cabaret night for Margaret Pennington up in the Lune Valley in Lancaster The venue for the evening was the same venue that we were staying the night at The Scarthwaite Country House Hotel in Caton A bit of an amazing place really it is in the middle of nowhere up a longish narrow drive that also is the access to a holiday home site The main hotel is probably at least 100 years old with a newish function room built on to the rear The hotel is what I term old fashioned definitely not your budget type hotel and probably in need of a bit of a refit and modernisation but it was a lovely place very quaint and very friendly and helpful management and staff so to be recommended It was great for dogs a big lawned area with tables for you to go and sit outside with your dogs and you could access the function room directly from the garden The area itself was superb we had a great view from the hotel down over the river Lune and the area was called the Crook of Lune and that was because the way the river bed ran it was the shape of a crook We had a good turnout for the Cabaret night and as usual it was a fabulous night with Mary on top form as a comedienne as well as all the serious stuff We stayed there for the next day for Mary s HTM training day and there were limited numbers as Margaret had kept it pretty much to her own dog club members so they got plenty to do a good couple of days in excellent company The last week in June Mary had her Daventry training week again We talked about auctions earlier in this update perhaps we should auction handler places off in this as it was a sell out with a long waiting list and would you believe that I ve already got a long waiting list for next year now And I can understand why The course is held at Kath Dark s farm in near Daventry and it is just a superb venue A lovely paddock for parking the caravans tens of acres to run your dog an agility training paddock for the afternoon sessions another well fenced paddock for obedience in the mornings and a building that could be used if the weather was wet but mostly used for social purposes during the

her Mum and the troupe in to Crufts plus the families of the girls We made use of a little bit of a private side entrance that we had into the arena and we got everybody in trouble free and I d obtained a supply of best in the house seats for the family so we got them seated there so they could have a good view of the show The girls had their photo taken with the Crufts Best in Show trophy and they had a nice posh star dressing room with lights all round the mirror etc it could have been the one that Robbie Williams had used I had a busy start to the evening commentating on the agility championships and the minutes tick by and the interval arrived and then it was time for Mary The programme was running late so it was a rather short interval and we were hoping that everyone would be back in their seats The lights dimmed and Nick had arranged for a montage of Mary s previous routines including the original Riverdance that she did in 1997 which she did with Kizzy and as this was drawing to a close Mary entered the arena with the lights down and there was a blue spotlight that highlighted her standing at the back of the arena with Levi The music started and off she went very well highlighted with spotlights When she was 2 to 3 minutes into the routine two girls entered the arena from each side and stood along the side of the ring ready to take their places When Mary was completing her leg weaving part of the routine they danced into the arena and took up their positions on the spotlights and the crowd went wild at this point Mary sent Levi round one of the girls on each side and they did a twirl then they dropped down onto the knees and in turn on both sides Levi jumped over their arms then they danced back in pairs and stooped down holding hands and Levi jumped between the girls they then danced in to a line with two facing in opposite directions and got the spacing exactly right so that Levi weaved his way through their legs and weaved his way back They then separated and Mary appeared in the middle with Levi going round Mary on his back legs and the girls went into the finishing pose And the whole place erupted into applause and cheers and almost a standing ovation and from comments passed afterwards it appears that a lot of people had their tissues out Mary was jubilant and she had a beautiful waistcoat on that came from Val in Australia and it had shamrock type designs depicted with mirror type jewelling with her black trousers with a sequin strip right down the outside leg We can t thank Roisin and Celtic Feet enough for what they did The 4 young ladies who were

weekend Mary has been to Turin on a number of occasions and previously she has flown Easyjet from Luton but when I came to book her flight they had cancelled that service and it wasn t restarting until early December so we had a choice Mary could fly from Gatwick on BA or fly from Birmingham on Airfrance that flies via Paris and looking at the flight connection times versus me driving to Gatwick and back twice it was obvious that the Airfrance flight was going to be the most expedient So she had a good flight there and the weekend was good and all was going fine until she arrived at the airport for the flight back on the Monday morning I had a phone call at 08 30 on the Monday morning to tell me that her host for the weekend had dropped her off and gone and she had been informed that the Airfrance pilots had gone on strike and they had cancelled all the flights I then had about of an hour in frantic activity contacting Mary s host in Turin to go back to the airport and also putting some money on Mary s phone She was lucky she was fairly close to the front of the queue to get dealt with she was offered a 3 hour coach journey to another airport to catch a UK bound flight or to come back the following day when the pilots would be working again but I had told Mary that there was a Gatwick bound flight that afternoon with BA and fortunately they put her on it so I just had to drive to Gatwick to collect her You read about things like this happening all the time and I suppose that Mary has done really well this being the first time it has ever happened to her She had only been back a day of course and I got her out working again She was doing a fundraising night in Kinver organised by the Kinver Veterinary Surgery It was a good night good atmosphere lovely people and as usual everyone enjoyed it The following week we had a night on the Wirral organised by the Wirral branch of the R N L I to raise funds for the lifeboats I understand that the local committee who are not dog people were concerned that the evening may have been a flop They had arranged it in a lovely hotel with a rectangular function room with a bar at one end and they were all cock a hoop as they sold well over 200 tickets But to say the working area for Mary was a bit on the small side would have been an understatement as it was a bit of a job to fit everyone in In fact it finished up with a row of chairs right up to the bar but in the break folk having to move their chairs so that people could get

were finished Mary was due on with hundreds watching And I stood there thinking what on earth is Levi going to do now will he do a runner or what but quite amazingly he did an amazing near perfect routine I think him having something to concentrate on got him over the trauma of the fireworks Anyway a fantastic night We had a lovely thank you card from the bride and groom afterwards telling us it was the highlight of the evening and we were indebted to Richard for travelling up to Tewkesbury with us and having a long journey home afterwards Next up on the magic roundabout was the KC International Agility Festival Another massive show that takes place at the East of England showground I was show manager and catering manager And apart from running her dogs Mary was waitress at 3 lunchtime and 3 evening meals A great show in fact it is a bit too popular really We had 18 competition rings and over 500 caravans and even with the East of England we are close to outgrowing the venue which is a great shame As soon as that event had finished we were off to Dogs in Need for our weeks holiday well I was on holiday anyway Mary s sister Pauline was with us so me and her had one or two days out while Mary stopped at home and ran the dogs Mary s fortunes at agility are a bit mixed at the moment there is so many good dogs in agility at the moment that the top twenty dogs can be split by 100th of a second so it can be a bit disheartening when you have what you consider a really really fast clear round and then for you to finish up in 16th place Weather wasn t good this year in fact probably some of the worst weather we ve had a DiN cold and damp I just about managed to get the awning down and all packed up before the heavens opened on the final day so that was the only good news weather wise The following weekend in August was the bank holiday weekend Mary was obediencing every day but we will come to obedience later The final weekend in August was the City of Birmingham show I stayed in the caravan as I was over there running the KC and Pedigree dog agility finals and Mary joined me on the Sunday because on the Sunday evening at the end of the show we were straight off in the caravan and up to Anglesey for Mary s week camp and once more Mary s sister Pauline came with us Mary takes the course for Maggie Backhouse and Rex Seddon at their smallholding They have a small but excellent indoor hall with the same surface that Rugby have got in their venue It s a rubberised safety surface that they use in children s outdoor play areas The mornings were freestyle training indoors and the afternoons were outdoors agility training for 20 handlers plus spectators Once more a great week with lots of good company and it would have been even better of course if it had not been the worst weather in Anglesey that we ve ever had Chilly and wet are the words I am looking for It is one of those times that you are glad you ve got a decent caravan The next day we should have gone to a wedding and for those of you that are in agility will know the groom concerned it was Alan Disbery getting married who now has got another life in media sales and his new hobby is scuba diving He must have had a couple of decent jobs as he was last seen driving a Jaguar company car but that didn t last very long as he had the car less than a month when he decided to take a short cut driving through a ford except the ford was a bit too deep I don t think the car lease company were very impressed when they had to write the car off as a total loss Yes Alan doesn t change The following week we were involved one evening with a Pedigree night at a hotel at the NEC It was for winners of a Pedigree Training Treats prize draw at Crufts and pet shops There were around 25 people there and their prize was a private show with Mary and her dogs and dinner with us A great night in very pleasant company That weekend the second weekend in September Mary should have been at two obedience shows in Coventry but unfortunately here we go again rain stopped play and both the shows were cancelled But she had better weather the following week as she was off to Spain to take a 2 day clicker course for one of the Spanish search and rescue teams She had a bit of a amazing time certainly a different type of dog to work with and the majority of them had not done much clicker training although one or two had actually got Mary s Dog Tricks books and could actually do some tricks so there was one extreme to the other Mary had an interpreter and it was the young lady from the hotel she was staying at called Maite and the hotel she stayed at Mary said was absolutely beautiful in a small town named Navarra The bad news was that there was no local airport so she had to fly in to Bilbao and then had a 2 hour drive to the hotel whre she was staying Mary refusing to hold a fish she had caught in Australia The following couple of weekends have been obedience so we will do an obedience roundup Firstly for FOXY well she had had little things going wrong with her obedience for the last few weeks and she is
