  • The Milomade motto is 'Too good to waste...' and I am a modern day magpie collecting and repurposing materials.
is hallmarked as British 925 sterling silver I research the hallmarks thoroughly and where appropriate provide a tag that explains the provenance of the materials used in finished pieces of jewellery I m happy to take commissions and work with your own silver items please get in touch to find out more as well as browse through previous commissions I have undertaken Almost everyone has a button collection stashed away somewhere Often this has been handed down through generations and many of us have childhood memories of plunging our tiny hands into a tin full of buttons and searching for the prettiest the one with a nice pattern or that is the most perfect pink I ve been collecting buttons ever since I was a little girl and love trawling through antique stores and charity shops to find unique little treasures amongst the bric a brac and paraphenalia Most of my button pieces are one of a kind creations never to be repeated others are limited edition sets Whether set in silver stitched to leather or used within the design for a greetings card the buttons I use old and new give a whimsical nostalgic feeling to each piece I make I lovingly refer to my copper pieces as re plumbed as the copper I use comes from all the pipes I ve collected from our house renovations It s amazing what you can do with a copper pipe Once annealed copper is soft and maleable but when work hardened it s strong and durable Fashioned into brooches earrings and pendants you would never know unless told that the copper once helped to heat and transfer water around my lofty old house When I was a child I used to collect erasers the ones that were scented like candy and

  • My Inspiration
Bass Rock It s no coincidence that Milomade also started in 2008 I walk on the beach everyday and it s great to be able to just listen to the sound of the waves the seagulls and the sea washing in and out of the pebbles It s a really reflective time for me I m often with my son exploring but I especially love it when I m just out with the dog as I get a chance to reflect on what I m working on think through ideas and problems and I often come up with solutions that I can t wait to rush back to the studio and try out I ve always been interested in the found object A lot of my work at art college and photography college has been based on found objects images and texts I guess it s the lost porperty inspector within me that d be my ideal job by the way that finds these things fascinating I want to know where these things have travelled from whether they were once cherished and lost or unwanted and discarded I want to know the stories and journeys Take an old battered teaspoon

  • The Milomade Story - From humble beginnings to my own little empire of creative recycling.
photography at Blackpool the Fylde College I was an avid photographer from an early age and built my own tiny darkroom in a cupboard underneath the stairs that was so small and well sealed that I had to take regular breaks from developing and printing to gasp for fresh air I graduated with a first class degree and my final work was all made using found images text and objects salvaged from the streets around where I lived I combined these with historic family photographs and ones from my childhood and weaved intricate stories and memories together After my studies I moved to Scotland and began work as a volunteer in Stills a photographic gallery in Edinburgh Here I met the man of my dreams began an interest in web design and animation and had some of the best times of my life I worked for many large and small design firms before deciding to become my own boss in 2003 After living in Edinburgh for a few years we found ourselves moving to Fife to get more space and to start a family We now live in an amazing cliff top house in Kinghorn on the East Coast of Scotland with our son and trusty four legged friend In 2008 I was awarded a grant to set up Milomade from the Craft Artist Grant Scheme available to artists designers and makers in Fife and was lucky to be awarded subsequent grants in 2009 and 2010 to build and grow my business Milomade was temporarily put on hold but kept ticking along gently for a few years as I wanted to take some time out on maternity leave and spend this precious time being a fulltime mum Now that he s past his second birthday I m itching to get

  • I am very concious of my everyday impact on the environment and try whenever I can to be as eco friendly as possible through the use of recycled materials.
bubble wrap and padded envelopes to package up orders whenever possible If an item requires gift wrapping I tap into my vast collection of paper ephemera and use something appropriate for the gift in question perhpaps a sheet of vintage music or an old map I do use gift boxes to package my jewellery and these are all made from 100 recycled card and materials Before the launch of Eco Silver in this country by Cooksongold I adapted my designs so that I used the minimal amount of new silver I possibly could within a piece Despite now using Eco Silver I still stick to these original principles Most of my jewellery is made from recycled silver now including Eco Silver but predominantly British Hallmarked antique silverware I have phased out the use of new silver although this is something I won t be able to do completely as I still buy in finished sterling silver chain which is not recycled I m gradually reducing the amount of chemicals in my studio and have ditched my acid pickle solution for a more eco friendly vinegar salt solution I often use eggs to oxidise my metals rather than chemicals too Sounds odd but it works Rather than use toxic chemicals to etch my metals I m currently experimenting and perfecting a process of electro etching using a simple salt solution and rechargeable batteries but tempted to experiment with potato power too I also work with reclaimed copper pipes salvaged from our own home renovations and I will hopefully be introducing recycled brass to my repertoire quite soon too All my stationery products are made using 100 recycled card stock paper etc and my stationery items are packaged in 100 biodegradable bags Having these policies in place means that I can incorporate
