  • Reversible Bucket Hat by Oliver + S | Milomade
all this hot sunny weather we ve been having I ve been desperate to get some summer hats that fits Milo and cover up his head and neck Most of the ones I ve found in the shops are useless they re small and barely cover the ears So I was lucky to come across this amazing free pattern from Oliver S for a reversible bucket hat It s perfect anf I urge you to make one for your child for your friends child for your grandchildren even for yourself Everyone knows that hats are a must for covering up young delicate skin This one has lots of style and sews up very quickly You can make it reversible with two favorite fabrics or you could add a little pocket on the outside and complement it with a fun lining Make one Make two Make enough to coordinate with each of your child s summer outfits or activities So say Oliver S and I d have to agree with them I ve made four of these hats now two for Milo one for his friend Lachlan and one for myself This isn t really a Tutorial Tuesday post as I m not providing the tutorial but the free pattern for the reversible bucket hat is available here and has been released to the masses to introduce folk to the new Oliver S Little Things to Sew book which I m quite tempted to buy as it s full of lovely patterns for little people This pattern is really well documented with good instructions and graphics and I don t see the point in copying and pasting the instructions here when you can just download the PDF If I m honest I found this pattern for the reversible bucket hat a litle tricky and fiddly and had to make my own little adjustments here and there but I m not an experienced sewer so others might find it really easy to follow All in all it took me about 2 hours to make each hat which is pretty good going when you need one in a hurry I found that the circle for the crown of the hat way too big and also didn t like the idea of clipping the fabric so much so this is where I mucked about with the pattern a lot to suit my skills and abilities I also thought the half inch seam allowance was too much especially as they then tell you to trim to quarter of an inch seemed a bit of a waste so my hats are probably a little bigger than they should be but that s fine with me Finished sizes according to the pattern are as follows For kids 6 12 months inside crown measurement 18 x small For kids 12 24 months inside crown measurement 19 small For kids 3 5 years inside crown measurement 20 medium For kids 6 8 years inside crown measuremtn 21 large Measure

  • My Mural Method | Milomade
giraffes you may ask The day after Milo was born Colin visited us in the hospital and on his way he found a twig in the shape of a giraffe and so our obsession began We saw giraffes everywhere found lots of giraffe toys visited the giraffe enclosure at Belfast zoo etc etc So when it came to decorating Milo s room I knew I wanted to paint a giraffe on one of his bedroom walls maybe do a mural I didn t know what form this would take until I came across this image on Pinterest I m not brilliant at drawing by hand and didn t fancy drawing directly on the wall as I knew it would all go horribly wrong So I imported the image into Adobe Illustrator and drew all 6 giraffes on screen like this I made the document and therefore the illustration actual size and then cut it up By that I mean that I created a rectangle the size of an A4 sheet 297mm x 210mm and duplicated this across the whole illustration I then used the pathfinder tool to cut the image up into A4 sheets by selecting one giraffe at a time with the overlayed A4 sheet templates The image below shows two of the giraffes with the A4 templates laid over the top of them It was then a matter of copying and pasting each A4 segment into a separate document that was set up as A4 and printing all the segments out individually then sticking them all together and then cutting out the individual giraffes It took quite a while but for me this was the easiest way to get the silhouettes I wanted They started invading the kitchen With my 6 cut outs and some tape I was then able to mess around with positioning on the bedroom wall until I was happy with the layout I decided to ditch one of the giraffes and also switched the head on another and settled with these final five Milo got to check the progress at every stage I then used Frog Tape to mask the outline of each giraffe Frog Tape is green masking tape which is far superior to the usual stuff you can buy I was really worried about paint leakage underneath the tape so I thought if I used Frog Tape I could minimise the risk The quality of the next few images is a bit rubbish as I took them on my iPhone late at night so the light was far from good I ran out of frog tape and had to revert to normal for the last two giraffes and the patterns within the other three so I decided to try out a tip I found online to reduce the paint leakage The tip is to use the same colour paint as your wall for your first coat So as my wall is white I painted all the giraffes white initially I think this
