  • Round the ‘Horn at Christmas | Milomade
around here I ve not logged into my blog for what seems like months and I feel terrible for neglecting it so much I ve just been so preoccupied with other things of late that I ve just not had the time One of those things being Round the Horn What is that you may ask Well let me tell you all about it After the disappointment of Central Fife Open Studios in the summer great idea great it s finally happened but down to the lack of advertising the footfall was not as great as I d hoped and it was a bit of an anti climax so I ve put a lot of effort into getting folk in Kinghorn to club together and organise a local open studio event near to Christmas this year Those of you who visited my studio over the summer may remember me asking whether this would be something of interest and because I got such a positive reaction from everyone I asked I decided it was something worth pursuing And so the concept of Round the Horn was born thanks to Colin who came up with the name Genius So let me explain On the 24th of November this year local artists and makers in Kinghorn are going to open their studios shops and galleries to the public for one day as part of a creative trail around Kinghorn To make it more interesting we ve included a few visiting artists and makers and hope that if this becomes an annual event the line up will change every year to keep things fresh We ve created an advent calendar like trail for people to follow in any order they wish and by collecting a picture stamp at each location on the map we ve had printed you become eligible to enter our prize draw one lucky winner will get a fabulous festive stocking filled with handcrafted goodies from the makers involved all you have to do is visit all the locations on the map and hand in a completed leaflet at the last studio you visit Here is a list of the folk involved this year Me obviously visiting Jeweller Claire Ferrier Silver Fusion Catherine Lindow www catherinelindow co uk Gail Cadogen My Cherry Pie mosiac works from the Ecology Centre Annie Crow DaisyC Handmade visiting artist Ritchie Feenie Hilary McGuire The Dragon s Den Lorraine Walker Hide Sleek Lynette Gray Kinghorn Station Gallery Linda McDevitt Rose Andrew Bentley Steed Oi Panda visiting feltmaker Maggie MacDonald So over the past few months we ve had lots of planning meetings dates to decide upon leaflets to design posters to design social networking to set up etc but so far so good and it s been hard work but so worthwhile I ve spent a long time putting a leaflet and poster designs together and everyone else has been leafleting like crazy and writing press releases and getting us in the paper too Hopefully all

  • Jewellery Workshop with Gavin and Noleen | Milomade
Lincolnshire for a big Andrews Clan Christmas get together at Colin s sisters The last time Gavin and Noleen visited us in Scotland we were living in Aberdour so they d never seen our cliff top house in Kinghorn before It was great to show them round and they had a very keen interest in my little Milomade studio at the front of the house and Gavin particularly salivated over my jewellery making tools and all the different types of pliers I had on display honestly men and tools heaven One evening we talked a lot about the process of making jewellery and decided to have a day in the studio playing and trying things out However I didn t want them just to play I wanted them to actually go through the process of creating a piece of jewellery and have a finished item by the end of the day that way they would get to try out lots of different techniques and see the whole process of making something from scratch in context and have something to take away with them rather than just doing a bit of sawing a bit of filing and a bit of hammering The night before Gavin was quite happy to just go with the flow and see what happened but in the morning he had a definite plan and drew out a sketch of what he wanted to make Noleen was a bit more relaxed about everything and just wanted to make a sea glass pendant and maybe a pair of earrings too so I had all my locally sourced sea glass out for her to pick a piece for her pendant and Gavin selected a piece for his as well Here s Gavin s process He drew a wee sketch and we talked about options and wrote a quick list of the processes we needed to go through so that he knew he d be able to try out ALL my tools He then set about drawing out the piece onto a sheet of copper and cutting this out using a jewellers saw You can see the piece of sea glass he selected for the pendant in the bottom left image The next steps was to file down the edges and use micromesh to sand polish the piece until it was smooth and shiny Next came the hammering to texture the piece And then the drilling We needed to drill two holes one for the jump ring that the chain would go through and one as a pilot hole We would thread the saw blade through this pilot hole and cut out a shape for where the sea glass would sit We d decided on this option after I showed them a brooch I made years ago using sea glass and copper If the sea glass just sat on copper it would look quite dull and dark but if it sat over a hole in the copper light would shine through
