  • Surfing the Net by Mobile Phone
Wed 19 Apr 2006 A study released Tuesday predicted that cell phones will become the primary means of surfing the Internet in some parts of the world in the coming years The Face of the Web the annual study of Internet trends by global market research firm Ipsos Insight found the robust growth in many global markets including France the U K and Japan Analysts reckon that part of this increase is due to mobile web access becoming more mainstream and no longer the preserve of early adopters In 2005 28 percent of those mobile phone owners used their phone to browse the Internet up from 25 percent the year before More significantly the increase is driven by adults aged 35 and older joining younger users in this habit Noted Brian Cruikshank Senior Vice President Managing Director of Ipsos Insight s Technology Communications practice said Accessing the Internet on a wireless handheld device is no longer a novelty for consumers in the major global economies It s becoming a common everyday occurrence for many people However growth in Internet browsing on a mobile phone is flattening in other leading markets such as the United States and Canada where wireless Internet access via notebook PC appears to be emerging as the stronger out of home Internet platform Of course it goes without saying that most people access the net using a personal computer and this remains head and shoulders above other web access methods However Ipsos reckons that when it comes to being away from your PC mobiles will have the edge over other gadgets In the long term many of today s PC centric online activities could be complemented through the mobile phone or migrate to the mobile phone altogether due to greater convenience and faster connection speeds said Cruikshank
