    navigation to main content Product support Travel Ways to bank Dealing with difficulties Security centre Glossary Accessibility Contact us Back to Nationwide co uk homepage Support You may be eligible for tax free interest Main content of page below Find out if you re entitled to receive gross interest If you live in the UK and your total annual income for 2015 2016 will be less than 15 600 this is referred to as your tax free allowance you may be eligible to receive your bank or building society interest without tax taken off To find out if this applies to you or to an account you look after for someone else calculate your eligibility for gross interest using HMRC s calculator Please read the information on this page or see the government guide to tax on savings interest If your annual income is less than your allowance If you ve worked out that your annual income is lower than your tax free allowance you may want to fill in an R85 form for each bank and building society where you have accounts By filling in this form you re telling your bank and or building society that you do not have to pay tax If you re not sure what counts as income please see HMRC s website or call the HMRC helpline on 0300 200 3312 If your income is above your tax free allowance please do not fill in an R85 form for any of your accounts Returning customers You can use our online form if you ve already read the supporting information are only registering your own account s or on behalf of a child under 16 where you are a parent or guardian are satisfied that your total annual income will be lower than your allowance Fill in an R85 online Important information Please read through the supporting information below and make sure you have read any notes relating to your situation before establishing whether or not you are eligible for tax free interest Children under 16 Looking after an account for someone else If your income changes Gift Aid Children under 16 Children get a tax free allowance too But if money from a parent produces interest of more than 100 a year the interest will be treated as their income For more information go to Interest on children s savings accounts or phone the HMRC helpline on 0300 200 3312 This rule does not apply to money given by others including grandparents If you are the parent guardian of a child under 16 you can fill in our online form to register for gross interest on their behalf Looking after an account for someone else If you look after an account for someone such as a child under 16 or someone who can t manage their own money themselves use their details including their address when you fill in the form If you hold Power of Attorney for the saver or are applying
