    order to meet these requirements it is therefore necessary to use a two channel switch to offer redundancy in the control circuit and to monitor the switch through a suitable safety relay or dedicated controller in order that faults in the safety circuit may be detected The diagram below demonstrates a typical circuit arrangement to meet the requirements of category 3 Skriv ut bild If more than one gate switch is to be monitored in order to continue to meet the requirements of category 3 it is essential to monitor each gate switch on individual monitoring circuits It is not advisable to connect two or more gateswitches in series where a category 3 control circuit is required This may be demonstrated by considering the following circuit Skriv ut bild Here two gateswitches are monitored through a single safety relay or dedicated controller The two channel circuit offers redundancy and the opening of either gate will break the input circuit opening the safety contacts of the safety relay which should bring the machine to a safe state However there are a number of points to consider If for example we open gate switch 1 the monitoring of gate switch 2 and any subsequent switches is not possible as it relies on the monitoring circuit being opened and then closed to check that the switch is working correctly Therefore it is not possible to detect a short or welded contact on gate 2 and the circuit may be reduced to a single channel operation Another fault may lead to the loss of the safety function In this situation a fault in the circuit is masked and the machine may be run with such an undetected fault If a fault is detected on a gate the safety relay or dedicated safety controller will drop out to a safe state and not reset until the corrective measures have taken place This should be the replacement of the faulty switch However if the faulty gate switch is closed the monitoring circuit will be made and by the opening and closing of a correctly functioning gate switch the safety relay or controller may be reset In this situation a machine may be reset even though a faulty gate has been detected again leaving it in a situation where the circuit is operating in a single channel mode If a gate switch is detected with a fault the single act of powering down and then powering up the safety circuit will lead to the resetting of the relay and again the machine may be reset even though a faulty gate has been detected again leaving it in a situation where the circuit is operating in a single channel mode All of these situations lead to the operation of a safety circuit in which a detectable fault exists If we try to meet the requirements of category 4 as outlined in BS EN954 1 which states that the single fault is detected at or before the next demand
