  • Is there room for new, truly co-operative movement in Saddleworth and beyond - Oldham Business Network
shopping can be done in 10 minutes sat at home in ones PJ s or onesie if you prefer or even on the daily commute It remembers what you had the last order saving you time browsing and then turns up at your door at a time convenient to you Once you have tried it its hard to go back This type of shopping isn t for some older folk those who have retired and don t know their way around an iPad They will happily visit these shops whilst we are all at work but what happens when they make way for the next generation on god s waiting list The new computer savvy time conscious generation will not tolerate 9 to 5 shops and half days on a Saturday They want what they want when they want it You could argue that the future looks bleak for the high quality local store only open at times not convenient for the modern day worker Aside from the stores high quality offering the tenacity of the Saddleworth villagers suggests to me there might well be a way All they have to do is borrow some ideas from the big boys H ow can we make these stores more accessible so that they can compete with the big corporate boys and win Firstly cooperation is the key here A meeting is needed and in the name of supporting local business where would be better than the local pub Items on the agenda should be accessibility times methods of ordering and delivery The method of ordering could take two routes telephone ordering or internet based ordering The first method is cheapest but is a faff on arranging payment The second method would be far more effective with all stores hosted on one website Then there is the challenge of accessibility So the easy way would be to create a rota in which one shop stays open until say 8 pm for arguments sake and rotates through the participating stores Say tonight is the butchers turn the products ordered would be dropped off by the greengrocers and bakers at the butchers and everything collected by the customer at the butchers Alternatively the butcher drops the products off at the local customer addresses on his way home A further option could be that all stores drop their products at the local pub after all it is open all evening Maybe the customer collecting their shopping might be encouraged to enjoy a quick pint and a bit of chit chat as well Everyone s a winner This shows that there is a way of preserving local business whilst bringing methods of sale into the 21st century I now plan to take these ideas to the local stores and speak to some IT professionals local of course and gauge the appetite for change The question is are our local heroes up for the fight There is of course 1 small point that I left out I

  • Interview Series: Rick Leach of Precision Pallets and Cases Ltd. - Oldham Business Network
a book titled 101 Ways How Not to Start a Business as the first few months were fraught with problems What challenges do you face as a business person in Oldham Economic ones mainly in our first few months revolving around cash flow as we needed to hit the ground running and start production and distribution of our products from day one We didn t have the opportunity to sit and formulate a true business plan and most of our decisions in the first few weeks were off the cuff and by the skin of our pants fortunately most but certainly not all were the right ones We re both fortunate and also hindered that we are in the mid to upper end of the timber packaging industry with the products we manufacture which is a blessing as our clients expect the very best but also limits our customer base slightly more than if we were in the cheap and functional bracket Why do you use OBN Being new to business and as a newly established business in the borough it helps us to connect with other local businesses and to seek advise from those around us who have been through the very same situations What are your Business Values Reliability flexibility dependability honesty and value for money Where do you see yourself in the future We re already looking at ways to diversify and are presently in talks to convert our waste products into renewable fuel for our own use and as a retail sideline We re also looking to expand our range of services and products and may enter into other fields not associated with packaging What business advice would you pass on to other OBN members If you see an opportunity grasp it Failure is not in
