  • Penryn Fair Day
    time for the fair to be held on the last Saturday of this month The idea to hold a fair was Mrs Rosemary Ashwin s who was Mayoress at the time Her husband Mr John Ashwin was Mayor and for a time was a County Councillor Rosemary had the idea from the old charter fairs which were held in the town The very first fair raised some 3000 which was donated to Stoke Mandeville Hospital The Chamber of Commerce supported the Town Fair as did members of Penryn Town Council and over the years thousands of pounds have been raised for local charities A variety of celebrities have opened the Town Fair over the years including Alvin Stardust s wife Lisa Goddard whose father lived in and owned the old dairy in the street A list of fair day openers is available on request The roads were not closed for the very first Fair Day but many people came and supported the event making it difficult for the cars to drive through the town Due to the high volume of visitors Penryn Fair Day now requires a road closure for the event Ken Gill our poet of Penryn has written poems about Penryn Fair Georgio Biagini wrote music for the Fair and much has been written in the local newspapers each year Over the years there have been many positive comments from visitors about Fair Day and it is a perfect opportunity for residents to catch up with old friends and neighbours over a welcome cup of tea and slice of delicious homemade cake It is also well known that the sun often shines for Fair Day so we hope to see you next year GET INVOLVED Today s Fair is made up of mostly charity stalls and a lot
