was monitored by Veterinary Nurse Sacha Elliott David then tried to pass a stomach tube to try and release the gas present A small amount of gas and food came out of the tube but not enough So the decision was made to open up Flash s abdomen so David could untwist the stomach and the stomach tube could be passed fully Once this was done the stomach had to be stitched to the wall of the abdomen to prevent this happening again Over all Flash was under sedation anaesthetic for about 3 5 hours He woke from the anaesthetic fine and was kept on intravenous fluid therapy over night David had saved his life Symptoms of GDV Attempts to vomit usually unsuccessful and may occur every 5 30minutes This seems to be one of the most common symptoms Unsuccessful vomiting means either nothing comes up or possibly just foam and or mucous Doesn t act like usual self Some dogs may want to go outside in the middle of the night and can be combined with vomiting Significant anxiety and restlessness This can be one of the early signs and seems fairly typical Hunched up appearance This seems to occur fairly frequently Bloated abdomen that may feel tight like a drum Other symptoms can be pale gums coughing heavy salivating foamy mucous around the lips or foamy vomit whining pacing seeking a hiding place evidence of abdominal pain or discomfort may refuse to lie down or even sit may drink excessively heavy or rapid panting Advice It is recommended to avoid exercise before and after eating Eating habits such as especially high raised food bowls rapid eating drinking too much water too quickly can cause gulping of air should also be avoided These things can help prevent GDV If

her stomach surgically resulting in David Hodges our vet performing a gastrotomy Grace was then diagnosed with pancreatitis in October 2011 and she now has to be on a permanent low fat diet for the rest of her life We hoped that Grace would not get any more problems as she is such a loving and kind dog and had been through so much already Then on the 19 th January 2012 her owner brought Grace to the clinic as she had fell down a hill well did a roly poly and was found to be lame on her right hind leg after returning home After David had examined Grace he advised strict rest and pain killers the symptoms started to get better and she improved nicely When brought back to the clinic for a recheck David said Grace can resume normal exercise but she became lame again Grace was booked in for some radiographs to be taken as David could feel the patella popping out This is dislocation of the kneecap and is very painful and the x rays confirmed this Grace was sent home on pain killers and strict rest and booked in for orthopaedic surgery on 27 th February 2012 Grace is recovering from her knee surgery very well David Lisa Sacha and Wendy are all very pleased with Grace s continued improvement and we are all very happy to give Grace Pet Doctors Rustington s First Braveheart award Back to the latest news from Pet Doctors in Rustington Rustington Pet Doctors in Rustington Find out more about our clinic Latest news Gallery Register your pet with us Opening Hours Monday 8 30 am 7 00 pm Tuesday 8 30 am 7 00 pm Wednesday 8 30 am 7 00 pm Thursday 8 30 am 7 00

  • Vets in Shirley - Pet Doctors
get hold of me and get me back into my basket mum then ran back down the road in shock herself to Pet Doctors where the team were very surprised to see me again so quickly Alwyn my vet and Sarah the nurse were on hand to look after me but because of the shock I was a little stressed with them so they gave me some sedative so that they could give me some fluids and X ray my hind leg chest and pelvis as my mum had seen it happen and saw that the van had clipped my hind end The result of the x rays showed that I had broken my right hind leg That night I went to stay at the hospital in Bitterne so the nice nurses could monitor me whilst I remained on fluids to help with the shock and my broken hind leg The next day my Dad collected me from the hospital and drove me to see my friends at Pet Doctors in Shirley I had to have another sedative as although I had received pain relief I was in a little bit of pain and needed to have my leg dressed to support the break whilst Mum Dad and Alwyn decided on my route of treatment Whilst I was under the sedative Alwyn check to see if he could feel my bladder As I had ben given fluids overnight and not passed any urine it should have been very full but he couldn t find it He then took another x ray of my tummy and was unable to see it on there so he telephoned Mum and Dad to ask permission to open up my tummy and find out what was going on On opening up my tummy it became clear that I had actually ruptured my bladder when I was hit by the van so Alwyn set about stitching it back together for me and yet again I needed nursing throughout the night so Sarah arranged for me to go to Pet Doctors in Botley to be looked after by Louise one of the nurses The following morning Dad picked me up from Botley and brought me to Pet Doctors in Shirley I do have my own personal kennel now and Sarah has been adopted as my own personal nurse Although I am trying to keep a low profile as I have a reputation to keep Each day I have a sedative so Sarah and Alwyn can redress my broken leg whilst my internal injuries heal However sometimes I have had to have it dressed 2 or 3 times during the day as I have a habit of getting the dressing off much to Sarah s disgust but to my amusement It s only because I love the attention but please don t mention it to your cats just in case they know me Once my internal injuries started to heal Mum Dad and Alwyn decided on what treatment

  • Vets in Chandlers Ford - Pet Doctors
the infection got worse and spread to my left hind leg The infection was so bad that the skin on my inner thigh became swollen and the skin died leaving a very large open wound The Vet and nurses at Chandlers Ford cleaned and dressed my leg every day I was very patient and stood very still whilst this was happening and mum stayed with me cuddling me for reassurance The nurses thought mum was very brave for watching too In the end I was sent to see a specialist to advise my mum and help her to decide whether we could carry out a skin graft on my leg or considering the extent of my skin condition whether it would be better to have my leg amputated Understandably this was not an easy decision to make but along with the advice of the vets mum bravely decided that removing my leg would be the best option for me So I returned to Chandlers Ford and went in for surgery Believe it or not I walked out of the practice the very same day on my three remaining good legs I have gone from strength to strength since then and always return for my check ups with a happy wag of my tail and a big fuss from the nurses They said I was always very brave and a pleasure to have as a patient Back to the latest news from Pet Doctors in Chandlers Ford Chandlers Ford Pet Doctors in Chandlers Ford Find out more about our clinic Latest news Gallery Register your pet with us Opening Hours Monday 8 30 am 7 00 pm Tuesday 8 30 am 7 00 pm Wednesday 8 30 am 7 00 pm Thursday 8 30 am 7 00 pm Friday 8 30
