    notice an increase in weight larger tummy area and the mammary glands becoming redder and enlarged and the production of milk You should de worm her at 4 to 6 weeks so that she does not infect her pups However prior to mating you should have her vaccinated to ensure that she passes on maximum immunity to her puppies You should feed her on a well balanced diet You will be able to find a food which has been commercially produced and is a prepared dry food You will not need to supplement the diet with extra vitamins or calcium and indeed it can be dangerous to do so As the puppies develop inside her she will be eating perhaps double the amount of food that she did prior to being pregnant She will not be able to manage to eat so much food in one go so you will have to give her smaller and more frequent meals When she is about to go into labour you will notice that she is no longer interested in eating her meals She will begin nesting and become restless Of herself she will start to pant and there will be a clear mucous discharge and her vulva may be swollen Then abdominal contractions will commence and the first pup should be born within one to two hours of these contractions beginning Sometimes the placental membrane ruptures before the pup is born or in other cases the pup is born covered completely in its membrane She will usually remove these membranes and sever the umbilical cord However she may become tired or perhaps is inexperienced and not do this in which case you can gently tear the membrane from the pup s nose and mouth When the membrane is removed the pup straightway
