    Export Sales About Us News Find Us Contact Us News MEWP s Explained Share MEWP s Explained Date Thursday May 28 2015 As a guide the British Standard BS 8640 2005 definition of MEWP is a mobile machine which consists as a minimum of a work platform with controls an extending structure and chassis that is intended for work at height However the most widely recognisable term for MEWPs is Powered Access which describes a machine that requires a source of power to allow the machine to gain access to work at height The International Powered Access Federation IPAF which promotes safe and effective operation of powered access equipment has defined MEWPs in four main classifications Vertical and Boom Lifts Vertical lifts are described to elevate the platform and operator directly above the MEWP Chassis IPAF Category a scissor lifts have been designed to utilise this action Also known as a cherry picker the Boom classification allows the operator to both elevate and extend beyond the MEWP chassis IPAF Category b Static and Mobile Lifts Two more classifications have been divided into further categories Static IPAF Category 1 and Mobile IPAF Category 3 The Static classification refers to the fixed position of the MEWP chassis after the platform has been elevated and is often used to describe MEWPs that require extendable arms to provide additional stability The Mobile classification refers to MEWPs that have a chassis which is able to move forwards or backwards even after the platform has been extended Platform Sales and Hire Ltd Here at Platform Sales and Hire Ltd we have been supplying new and used powered access equipment across the UK for more than a decade Based in Milton Keynes Buckinghamshire and in the West Midlands we have a huge range of platform lifts available
