  • France - Popham Alpacas
crossings didn t spoil a good trip All the alpacas arrived safely and have their own private paddock with shelter at Quelvehin Alpacas They caused the usual clamour of interest at the border post but the official in duplicate must be stamped in red paperwork was given a cursory glance and shrug and then we were allowed on our way Steve and Jane looked after us very well we were treated to the biggest plate of Fruits de Mer I have ever seen on Thursday Friday we took a trip down to Vannes to see the Christmas lights which hadn t been switched on and did a bit of shopping and had lunch in one of the many cafes Alpaca business took up most of the rest of the time and then it was time to return to Roscoff but not without first stocking up in the supermarket with all our favourite french goodies We nearly came back with a puppy but fortunately didn t have the necessary official duplicate stamped in red paperwork so had to leave him behind Posted in Cria Post navigation Quiet week Happy New Year Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your email address will not

the excitement in the build up to the big day Sorry for the blog being so quiet recently I will try and do better for the new year There you go that will be my New Years Resolution I much prefer the sound of that to a diet The alpacas cleaned up beautifully in the freezing weather they seemed to love it We didn t have any snow but loads of ice and frozen ground Alas though the rain is back now and the alpacas have gone back to their drowned rat appearance We have weaned quite a few of the cria in the last few weeks and as per normal most of them handle the next few days quite happily but there s always one or two that wonder around totally lost They re the ones we watch very closely and dose up with wormer vecoxan and vitamins They do loose some weight but soon begin to pick up again Posted in Cria Post navigation France New year New Males One thought on Happy New Year Mark says 6th January 2010 at 2 50 pm Nice looking group of boys at the mighty Popham The Rheas are growing nicely

  • Miscarriage... - Popham Alpacas
mated in October the last group of the year and we ll spit them off at the weekend to find out which one Posted in Cria Post navigation Sunshine Culprit found 5 thoughts on Miscarriage Perry says 26th January 2010 at 11 58 am Wow we ve had slipped pregnancies of course but never seen anything like this the birds always get in too fast for any evidence to be left Reply Rolf Barbakken Knapper Alpakka says 26th January 2010 at 6 45 pm Sorry to hear that Never fun when it happens We had one just before Christmas eve Extremely cold out Could be stress or something else we will never find out about Reply Jenny Fowberry Alpacas says 26th January 2010 at 9 53 pm Thanks for posting the photo of the poor little aborted mite so we can see what size it was I read somewhere that of all livestock alpacas can abort fairly easily probably due to the extreme conditions in South America where life can be perilous I think our conditions recently in this country have been fairly testing for alpacas and humans and because dams can stall their pregnancies to a certain extent we are now expecting our spring babes in July Jenny Reply gary sanders says 27th January 2010 at 9 02 am Thanks for the comments everyone I guess its just one of those things you have to take on the chin when you decice to breed livestock I m sure the cold weather won t have helped with the early pregnant so we ll be keeping a very close eye on them Reply Liz says 30th January 2010 at 3 07 am Hi I came across one today also It was a fair bit larger than this one Have no idea

  • 2014......Bring it on! - Popham Alpacas
What a wet Christmas and New Year and not without their problems Christmas day saw us treating Compass our Navigator boy for a burst abcess in his ear Well we didn t know that was what it was when we found him staggering around as though he was completely blotto but it soon became evident when you noticed the smell and traced it to a very stinky pussy ear Anyway a few days of antibiotics and a bit of tlc and he s back to normal It did put me off the turkey a slight bit The mums and cria spent most of the period in the barn eating me out of house and home but they are looking very well on it Let them out today for a slice of sunshine and at first they wouldn t budge quite happy to stay where they were but you know what its like once one goes the rest follow We also had what remains of our 2012 boys in the barn We re down to five left and they are staying put at Popham as they are in the show team Plans are under way for the Nationals which will soon be upon us Unfortunately it will probably come a bit too soon for some of our September babies We are silver sponsors so really want to make a good show I plan to get Popham out there a whole lot more this year So 2014 bring it on Mums and cria enjoying the sun Our Intermediate males a black suri Anarchy a cream suri Cito Subterfuge an appaloosa huacya Duplicity an appaloosa suri and Bucanneer a fawn huacaya Posted in Cria Post navigation 2013 is nearly over where has the year gone Catch up time 2 thoughts on 2014 Bring
