  • PAT Testing Basics
used the appliance has been made to the correct European Standard the Class of the appliance whether the plug and fuse carry the correct BS numbers the suitability of the appliance for the environment ingress protection rating where necessary and many more Due to the technical nature of the Formal Visual Inspection it is normally carried out by a suitably trained member of staff or PAT contractor The results of a Formal Visual Inspection are to be recorded irrespective of the results obtained i e whether the appliance has passed or failed If carried out correctly the Formal Visual Inspection will identify up to 95 of appliance failures whereas the electrical tests will only find around 5 of appliance problems Click here for more information The PAT Tests we carry out are designed to measure the quality of the safety devices built into appliances and their ability to protect the user from harm One specific safety feature is an earth path Some appliances have exposed metal parts which may become live should the appliance develop a fault This in turn could lead to an electric shock for the user if they touch these parts To help prevent this an extra wire is added to the appliance by the manufacturer which connects the metal parts of the appliance to the protective earthing conductor in the fixed installation If the appliance develops a fault and the metal parts become live the fault current should pass from the metal parts down the earth wire into the mains wiring of the building and to safety An appliance with a protective earthing conductor earth wire is known as Class I The Earth Continuity Test uses a test current which is applied to exposed metal parts of the appliance thus simulating a fault in the appliance If the earth wire in the appliance is present and in good condition the test current should go from the metal parts down the earth wire to the PAT Test equipment which displays the test results as a resistance value measured in Ohms Ω The engineer should use their skills and known values to determine whether the test results are acceptable for the appliance Typical results are between 0 01Ω and 0 10Ω for an appliance with a short lead rising to values in excess of 0 30Ω for longer extension leads Maximum values do apply and must be observed at all times Click here for more information Insulation is described as any non conductive material being used to keep the appliance user away from live parts within the appliance thus reducing the risk of electric shock It can be anything from modern materials such as plastic or silicone through to more traditional materials such as wood or even air The quality of the material being used needs to be very good for obvious reasons but over time it may deteriorate with age and use The Insulation Resistance Test is designed to measure the quality of the insulation surrounding live

  • Which PAT Testing Course
time designing and delivering a multitude of training courses for many different industries through their own training centres or approved training providers Their courses are generally very good and are well respected but they are often designed for people with previous qualifications or experience in a particular industry For example the notes for the C G 2377 state that their course is aimed at practicing electricians and this qualification will help and progress individuals within the Electrotechnical industry Obviously if you are a practicing electrician this may be a useful addition to your qualifications However if not you may find this course is too difficult as it will be assumed that you have a level of electrical knowledge already The trainee will have their understanding tested via a practical skills test and theory examination PAT Testing Competency Course In house Many people believe the myth that PAT Testing must be carried out by a qualified electrician whereas in fact the person carrying out the role must be a competent person Whilst there is some electrical content within PAT Testing role the bulk of the role is more associated with commonsense and Health Safety A good in house course will be based upon the recognised text for PAT Testing the Code of Practice for In service Inspection Testing of Electrical Equipment latest edition the same text which the City Guilds 2377 course is based upon However the course will be tailored to suit the needs of the client For example someone tasked with PAT Testing in a primary school wouldn t necessarily need to know how to inspect and test a 3 phase motorised item more associated with a factory environment Once the basics of PAT Testing are understood they can be applied to all electrical equipment The role isn t as complicated as you may think but it does require commonsense the right attitude a level of technical ability attention to detail and the ability and willingness to follow a method of working to its conclusion The trainee will have their understanding tested via a practical skills test and theory examination Online or DVD based PAT Testing Course Arguably these courses hold the least amount of value as they are ultimately a guaranteed pass for the minimum amount of effort Basic subject matter is provided and the trainee works through the modules at their own pace At the end of each module there will be a test before moving onto the next module If the trainee fails they simply go through the module as many times as necessary in order to pass At the end of the course will be a final test Upon completion of the course a certificate will be issued At no stage is there any interaction with an instructor so what tends to happen is the trainee will simply learn the answers to the questions by trial and error rather than asking for help and gaining an understanding of the answer which can then be applied

  • What is PAT Testing? - A useful guide to PAT
carried out in both cases is broadly the same although there is a difference in scale and complexity From this point onwards let us concentrate on PAT Testing and leave the fixed installation to the electricians In service Inspection Testing of Electrical Equipment As most people refer to typical work equipment as portable due to its size and portability maintenance of work equipment has been known as Portable Appliance Testing or PAT Testing for many years In a way it s like calling a vacuum cleaner a Hoover when in fact it may be a Dyson It has become a generic name In reality not all electrical equipment is portable and our role involves more than just testing so we should really use the full name for the role In service Inspection Testing of Electrical Equipment Although it is a much larger and unwieldy name it is much more descriptive and suitable If we break the name down it gives us a better understanding of what the role entails In service The equipment is in use as opposed to electrical equipment which may be on the premises as stock items for sale Inspection Before equipment is tested for electrical safety it should be inspected for damage missing parts added parts equipment information power appliance classification voltage ingress protection rating suitability of use statutory symbols damage to the plugtop flex suitability of the fuse British Standard numbers etc Testing Once equipment has passed a Formal Visual Inspection it can be tested for electrical safety This normally involves putting the equipment through a series of electrical tests using known currents and voltages and taking test results These results are compared to known values to determine whether specific safety features built into the equipment will perform if there is a fault situation Electrical Equipment As we have already identified not all electrical equipment is portable In fact we can break equipment down into several different appliance types based upon how often they are moved their size and the proximity of the equipment user to the equipment For example a drill is classed as hand held as the user holds it when it is in use whereas a fridge is classed as stationary as it doesn t move These different appliance types will help us to determine the potential risks attached to the appliance and how often we need to carry out inspections and tests on the equipment The PAT Testing Process PAT Testing is relatively simple but in order to carry it out correctly the PAT Tester must be organised disciplined and be able to follow a process We can teach the technical side of PAT Testing but we can t change a bad attitude Environment Check This is to do with the safety of the PAT Tester and also the safety of the user Upon entering the room a PAT Tester should have a good look around at the overall safety of the environment For example is the equipment being used for
