  • How to make the most of retro fashion | Retro Stuff
ever evolving How to make the most of retro fashion By Alan on January 25th 2013 Back in the 1980s fashion was just as popular as today but the styles were vastly different What people used to wear then is what we now refer to as retro Yet even if most people associate retro as old and vintage now it seems like retro is making a comeback in the fashion and design industries Whether it is seen through new designs that adapt some of the concepts from that era or people simply rushing to thrift stores to buy genuine retro clothing there is no question that there is an appetite for it Of course reworked fashion styles are one things but it does not take a lot of imagination to simply reuse the old outfits Instead many designers want to bring the retro look back with a twist This new retro look includes things like stretched pants and tights along with long shirts or even leg warmers why not In fact many think that if you have an oversized shirt or if it slouches on one side then it is even better Showing off golden buttons or chains brings you to the top of the fashion line in this new 80s retro If you were to look at a casual business look from the late 1980s it would include a blouse tapered tight trousers and a flowy jacket with big shoulder pads The pockets would be pushed up through the sleeves or simply rolled up A skirt on the other hand would be a very short pencil skirt also going together with an oversized jacket For the guys parachute pants were for running around not just skydiving As for the dance floor glitzy tight skirts can work along with spike

  • Retro is ever evolving | Retro Stuff
test Retro is ever evolving By Alan on January 20th 2013 As styles evolve whether that is in fashion architectural or design these styles take many different shapes and forms Retro is something that used to be very popular in the early 1980s all the way to the 1990s and fell from grace in recent years However this outdated style is now making a comeback in some areas and it may be worth looking again Culturally retro can be considered a trend a style or even a fashion sense and back in its hay days it used to be the norm but now retro is something we think about when referring to the last part of the 20th century A lot of post modern art ended up being retro whether that be in advertising mass media or even TV cartoons from that era The word itself comes from a Latin prefix and it means backward in times which in this case is a literal translation Of course back then people didn t think about their modern style as retro but it quickly became known as that When referring to a particular style it needs to be around 15 to 20 years of age at least to be called retro and is often seen as a work that goes backward taking in the lessons of the past instead of a futuristic look In the era after World War II the word itself started to be used more referring to the recent past Even in military terms retro could be used to describe propulsion such as a retro rocket which means that the power is applied towards the back The word itself then started to become more common in modern English and while it now describes things from just a few decades

  • Current trend for all things retro knows no sign of waning | Retro Stuff
July 7th 2013 Right now all things retro are popular from eighties fashion to vinyl records it seems that history is a great inspiration for hipsters and trend setters alike The question of course is that with so many different choices what will be the next big retro fad There is a strong appeal to retro that continues to last through the decade because people are willing to look over problems in things that have been deemed retro For example vintage clothing that is faded might not have sold much back in the day but now it can go for hundreds with the proper buyer in mind The same thing can be said for vinyl which at one point was considered outdated and of poor sound quality One item that is due for a retro comeback is the old VHS video Sure the grainy quality of the video at the time was a bother but now that film consumption is as easy as downloading a video online or streaming one it seems almost comforting to have to rewind a film before you can watch it again It used to be you had to work to watch a video and if the tape got messed up you had to take the pain of the spools on your skin as you agonisingly wound it up Another retro fad that is posed to come back is that of the old mobile phones Touch screen phones are large and impersonal but back in the day a phone was a simple device that connected to a slow and archaic network You had the charm of waiting for characters to pop up one by one on the screen and the entire process was still cool Don t forget of course how satisfying it was to snap

  • Murray Walker tells of his love of all things retro | Retro Stuff
2013 Early this March 2013 Murray Walker OBE considered by many as one of the country s greatest treasures and a legend in the world of motoring was nice enough to grant his admirers an interview while at Race Retro Younger readers might not be aware that Walker is credited for coming up the name Ventora for Vauxhall back in 1968 In discussing his most famous achievement Walker was happily inclined to share the story behind the name Initially Vauxhall Motors a subsidiary of the American firm General Motors had wanted to name the model Ventura However management from Pontiac moved to block this as it had already claimed the name for one of its other models This could have been a major setback for many advertisers but Walker readily came up with a simple alternative Ventora The name would quickly become a legend as at the time of its release no other vehicle was able to come close not even other models from Vauxhall Motors to its performance The name change came easy to Walker although this he only admitted in quite a modest tone He also recalled how excited he had been with the marketing campaign that followed particularly with using the phrase lazy fireball to describe the vehicle in its brochures When asked which Vauxhall Models car had made him feel a success Walker shared how his wife had fallen in love with their Vauxhall Viscount More specifically his wife liked how the car offered lots of space wood and leather trimming and electric and wireless windows But when asked about his personal preferences Walker admitted to preferring his Pirelli Cinturatos in those days Of course he also switched to using the Ventora once the model was officially made available in the market And in those days

  • The evolution of bicycle chains | Retro Stuff
It s a little weird thinking about a chain device being a brand new item in the downhill world of cycling but in the prime days of the sport it was separate from the suspension so there was not much that distinguished a XC from a DH one most were even styled with a triple chain set Homemade chain devices were common as most racers seemed to notice the problem before any of the companies could When the manufacturers finally caught on to the problem this didn t make it any easier for racers as the companies then stated it was something you had to have Of course back then there was nothing by the name of an ISCG mount as everything had to either be clamped around a seat tube or mounted off the bottom shell bracket Typically if you think that a chain is hard to put on these days you should have tried to put one on back then Nothing was ever very simple back then and recalling from an individual he stated that his favourite one would have to be the Mr Dirt one It wasn t all that pretty and the lower end had to be cut off to prevent dragging it around in the dirt but the price was exceptional and it could be rigged to fit almost any bike Other features it possessed were that they were a lot quieter than some of the other models made that year and it was very reliable in preventing the loss of a chain as it fully encased the chain A bad thing about this device was it did collect quite a bit of mud which caused the chain to drag also it didn t have a form of any bash protection It s still not
